Is Superdry the kiss of death to teen street cred

DS needs a new coat.
He is 16, but is a complete country mouse, and has no real concern for fashion.

He does like orange, and so do I, as he's more visible in the dark walking back from school.
He also likes parkas, as he's tall and anything waist length is more rib length on him (he's 6'3" with a long torso).

I've found this - ticks lots of boxes, but isn't Superdry a bit middle aged? DS is so nerdy that I don't want him to alienate himself even more from the cool kids.

Superdry is terrible quality. A few years ago, we purchased a coat, a rucksack, and some other items from a store in town for our son. The zipper on the coat seemed to be made of a plastic material, which didn’t hold up well, and the stickers and motifs on the rucksack came off quickly. We even tried another Superdry rucksack and the same thing happened. The items weren’t cheap either. Since then, we haven't purchased anything from Superdry. North Face is a much better choice.

bigkidatheart · 06/12/2024 08:18

mine wear northface, berghaus, canada goose (very good copies because i'm not paying that)

UniPsychle · 06/12/2024 08:24

Haven't the 90s made a comeback? DS's friendship group all seems to dress like we did at uni. Superdry was in then so...

@DogSmiles when did I say a 'young boy shouldn't wear a coat he likes'? I said someone tall in an orange coat, to me personally, wouldn't look good. Idk what age. But of course they should wear it if they want.
I'm not going to walk up to them and start slagging it off. 🤣

A someone who has a son who isn't interested in fashion and would walk around in a bright yellow banana suit if he could, I agree that you have to make sure they aren't targets for bullying. I try to dress my son 'trendy' where possible, and sometimes that means being blunt. It's North Face, or Ralph Lauren (East London) or Berghaus. Also weirdly Trespass is quite popular here.

Have a look at M&M Direct, they sell good reduced rate parkas etc - end of line stuff so not on there for long either. I recently got a North Face beanie and gloves for about a tenner each when they are usually a hell of a lot more!

LittleBalletBum · 06/12/2024 08:34

I would never have chosen it but was gifted a superdry parka and it’s the warmest coat I’ve ever had

but where I live you don’t wear North Face (even as a teen) it’s a bit county lines IYKWIM

Edited

I’m glad you edited that 😅 Otherwise that sounds uncomfortable and also perhaps oversharing? 🤔

its amazing that people are judged so much because of a label on their clothes. Ignore labels... who cares where its from, where want you want and stop judging people based on a label.

JaneandtheLaundry · 06/12/2024 08:56

Gosh I love my Superdry coat. It's anything but super dry, I must say, so it only comes out when it's not heavily raining, but I didn't realise that I became a very uncool middle aged man by wearing it. I was originally going to comment that maybe it was time for a new coat then I kept reading and realised that I thought "road men" meant workers doing the stuff on the motorway etc, and if I'm that out of touch, the Superdry coat is probably just right even if I'm not middle aged yet or a man. 🤣

https://www.canadagoose.com/uk/en/counterfeit/counterfeit.htmlCounterfeit is the word you are looking for 'copies' is incorrect.
Counterfeit goods are awful, might save you some money but really you should educate yourself & not proudly promote your "copies"

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 06/12/2024 09:04

At my kids' school most of the teens wear North Face puffy jackets, Canada Goose parkas or some sort of Barbour affair. I'd say in my area generally (fairly rural Shropshire), majority of the teens are in black North Face puffers!

That is absolutely true but if you are a teenager living in a teenagers' world, labels are what makes them feel like they belong or can be accepted in the peer group they are stuck with. At that age, being accepted feels like a very big deal. Being rejected or mocked feels like a major disaster.
It could be a certain style of clothing. But this is now reduced to a certain label.

BeyondMyWits · 06/12/2024 09:15

No one round here - near head office- wears Superdry any more.

They were prosecuted for not paying minimum wage. In a crack down locally they were the biggest offender. Almost 1000 staff were underpaid.

SuzieNine · 06/12/2024 09:16

DS14 wears superdry. North Face marks you out as a chav unless you are actually wearing it hiking or mountaineering apparently.

SharpOpalNewt · 06/12/2024 09:17

DD2 (15) went through a phase of hating Superdry but now likes it again. Hoodies and tops anyway, not sure about coats.

I think it must only be amongst a demographic that The North Face is considered such (reverse snobbery, dare I say). I see lots of North Face out and about where I live, and no one I see wearing it could ever be considered 'chavvy'.

Inner city Birmingham here... It's Multicultural London English. The term went out of fashion in my school a while ago I think, along with my favourite "wasteman".
Neither's a compliment 😂 I'm not sure if there are any equivalents that have come out yet.

Haha I don't know when I first read it I thought about those dystopian movies and tv-shows, like a gang of raiders or the general bad guys in a plot. Mad max, walking dead, the last of us, all sprung to my mind. Just never heard of "Roadmen" before, interesting!

ThunderLeaf · 06/12/2024 09:35

Cowrains · 06/12/2024 07:37

I’m north highlands, it’s used up here, mainly in the context of wannabe roadman, because they’re just dressing like the part rather than actually roadmen.

That's interesting, I've never heard of Roadmen. We're fairly rural but have amenities like a petrol station and can drive 20 minutes one way to an Asda so not in the total sticks/have access to civilisation haha... but drive the other way there's nothing for a long time. Maybe I'm too rural to have heard it! Just piqued my interest for some reason. It sounds quite dystopian to me!

It's the uniform of kids who have recently arrived from London (there is a certain London borough which is 'dumping' problem tenants in our rural borough, 60 miles away). They have brought no end of trouble and this is what they all wear. Hence why it is despised as being 'chavvy'.

GettingStuffed · 06/12/2024 09:43

My kids were brought up to not not care about brands, they were never bullied about it.

Yes it's exactly that. Your view will be influenced on whether your neighbours (peers perhaps) wear North Face for the benefit whilst walking their dogs, or whether they wear it to go out shifting gear.

ArabellaScott · 06/12/2024 09:50

Whar · 05/12/2024 20:27

Of the outdoors (rather than sports) brands, the North Face seems popular amongst the teens I work with. All black though... I've actually raised with work that we need to change our uniform rules because black outdoor wear is just not safe

Please tell every school in the country. I'm aghast at the hordes of kids spilling out into dark streets in black coats like a swarm of invisible ninjas.

Barbour, DuBarry and RAB seem to be the favourites for dog walkers.

sellotape12 · 06/12/2024 09:54

I was a total nerd in high school in Yorkshire and conversely when my parents tried to give me something that was obviously cool and on-trend, I found it actually gave me more attention. Like the kids picked on me for trying to fit in and trying to be cool 😥. It made me feel horrible. So there’s two ways to look at everything. The Uniqlo suggestions sound good. It’s kind of a normcore brand
