Is Superdry the kiss of death to teen street cred

DS needs a new coat.
He is 16, but is a complete country mouse, and has no real concern for fashion.

He does like orange, and so do I, as he's more visible in the dark walking back from school.
He also likes parkas, as he's tall and anything waist length is more rib length on him (he's 6'3" with a long torso).

I've found this - ticks lots of boxes, but isn't Superdry a bit middle aged? DS is so nerdy that I don't want him to alienate himself even more from the cool kids.

Orange Parka

If he'd live a north face, then get him a north face

Just add some high vis little strips if need he

@HisMajestysSecretCervix

they are so expensive though. OP may not want to spend so much on a coat.

I think orange is much more the kiss of death than the brand. He’s going to look like lifeboat crew.

He likes it so everyone else can fuck off really.

Frozensnowflake · 05/12/2024 22:08

Here berghaus, montirex and north face are the trendy coats but I think your son should get whichever coat he likes

Don't know what Road Men are, but North Face is definitely the brand to have in South West London!

Roadman is chav rebranded innit bruv.

I'm a teacher and would be pretty bloody angry if a group of students decided to alienate a single child because of the brand of his coat. Does he really want to be friends with these "cool" kids?

I love the way the "nerdy" students dress. Here, they have duffle coats and long heavy trench coats and tartan donkey jackets and they look utterly brilliant. I get it if a student really wants to fit in (and here that appears to be a black coat with North Face written on it), but if he wants an orange parka, I would buy the orange parka.

You could be as angry as you liked, it wouldn't stop the child being bullied. A nerd doesn't necessarily want to be friends with the cool kids, although school life is often easier if you are, but wants to at least be invisible to them and not stick out as an obvious target for bullying. It's why all kids care about fashion to some extent, even the ones who otherwise wouldn't, it's because they have to.

OP orange is good for being more visible in low light but if you want him to be seen in the dark you need something reflective. I usually buy silver metallic 100% waterproof outer coats that shows up better in headlights, I'm not a teenage boy though so I can't say if it's fashionable for them.

Thiis is so area dependent. My kids have superdry coats and shock horror they actually wear them unlike anything else they have had before.

Only Roadmen wear North Face.

Yes, same here. Those who wear North Face around here are viewed as a certain type.

This is really funny. The kids I see with the North Face puffers are all the private school kids round here!
They even get mugged for them apparently!

allthatfalafel · 05/12/2024 22:13

catlesslady · 05/12/2024 20:59

I think North Face is a 'love it or hate it' sort of brand. I noticed that tons of the older teens around us wear it and thought I would get 'cool mum' points by suggesting we get one for 16 year old DS. He declined in the strongest terms and said the same thing about it being for 'roadmen' or wannabe roadmen. (obviously I then had to ask what a roadman is- originally something to do with drugs apparently)

So weird, I'm of the generation where the only people wearing North Face were beardy middle aged middle class hikers.

Yep, it's definitely area dependent. Definitely a total chav uniform too around here or worn by the would be roadmen. Don't know what the private school kids around here wear as i haven't looked. Just blazers I think. Tbh being privately educated doesn't mean that the kids are any better behaved than state educated children. I've heard some terrible stories from local private schools

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/12/2024 20:30

He'd love a North Face jacket, a big puffy down one, but we live in rural West Yorks, and I'm not paying that much for a coat that's not even waterproof.

Ad it happens I used to do a lot of mountain sports, and had an "original" north face down jacket in the early 90s. It's a bit grotty now though!

My teens wear my NorthFace from 20 years ago. It is still going strong.

FrangipaniBlue · 05/12/2024 22:26

Superdry is typically 40s dad still making some effort. Northface is the uniform of little scrots who have been or should be sent to juvenile court.

Same where I live.

DS16 has a Ralph Lauren puffa/parka thingy purchased from TK Maxx but his favoured coat is a waterproof but thin Rab jacket.

TheRainItRaineth · 05/12/2024 22:26

This is all really area and school dependent. DD (18, loves clothes/fashion) wouldn't be seen dead in North Face, but her friends from schools not a million miles away seem to be in the North Face uniform 24/7. DD would probably like the orange jacket a lot more. She had a crazy pair of wide-legged orange trousers from Ragged Priest when she was about 13 or 14 and absolutely rocked them. And she has several tops from Superdry.

Good on your son for picking what he likes, OP.

TeachesOfPeaches · 05/12/2024 22:27

The true roadman jacket is a Trapstar or Moncler puffer. Much to Moncler's dismay I'm sure Grin

Really? Teenagers are notorious for this. Always have been always will be.

LigamentBandy · 05/12/2024 22:30

C**v is horrible esp to describe someone's child. This is style and beauty not aibu .
(Still grim used on there)

DelilahBucket · 05/12/2024 22:31

Depends on the teen. My DS loves Superdry stuff, but he doesn't dress "fashionably".

coldcallerbaiter · 05/12/2024 22:36

My kids have a few superdry pieces. Bought a while back though They mix and match designer, trendy, stuff bought on Europe trips and basic/ cheap stuff, they don’t really care.

SummerLightning · 05/12/2024 22:36

Mine has asked for a super dry hoodie for Xmas! I have no idea if he is considered cool or uncool though. He also likes north face. 🤷

Don't BBC reporters doing the 'standing by the coast in a massive storm' thing all wear North face.

Switcher · 05/12/2024 22:40

Superdry stuff is quite good quality and comfy. Probably bot cool, but if it's a good coat he likes who cares really.

SisterAgatha · 05/12/2024 22:50

I have a superdry coat. It’s the down one, navy, no real label on it except for the sleeve and even then you have to look close.

I got it for warmth, practicality, durability and because it was waterproof and had lots of pockets. I love it for walking.

anyway I am constantly told “ooh that’s a nice coat” by people passing with dogs, or when I’ve worn it to work - in a non sarcastic way. They are all my age however (40’s) so not the demographic you are looking at!

QuintessentialDragon · 05/12/2024 22:52

Good on him! If he likes it - buy it. The colour is a bit wow, but it's his coat, he chose it.

My DD has an identical coat like that Superdry one, just in beige/sand. From Only (I think). She browsed and chose it herself, I didn't suggest it. Well ok, she's a 12 year old girl, not a 16 year old boy, but still. She wears it fine, no issues with bullying or anything like that. She said it's warm, comfy, waterproof and she likes it.

Teens around here seem to be in short black puffers. Various brands, not many North Face ones, but it has to be a short black puffer. It's a bit boring, but what do I know.

Thingymajigi · 05/12/2024 22:53

Superdry is for plain clothed police men.

I would try Uniqlo, Arket or Everlane.
