Thank you @Letmegohome 😘

tell me you don’t know anything about Vivienne Westwood without telling me you don’t know anything about Vivienne Westwood.

Stay tuned for next week, when the OP visits a Monet exhibition and finds the colours a little blurry…

It's like how I despise all of those sack dresses that make you look like a Mormon sister wife from Idaho wearing her grandmother's hand-me-downs, but they're always recommended on here. No accounting for taste and all that!

One of ny friends is LDS and from Idaho and has more fashion sense than that! Although she's not a sister wife (the FLDS are the weird ones.) 😁 Her DH is a snazzy dresser too. (Looks like an eccentric college professor, actually works for the USAF.)

Your post reminds me of that washing powder,/fabric softener ad from the 2000s/2010s when 1960s style things became trendy again and the nan gave her teenage granddaughter her old dress. The girl wasn't very impressed until it was washed and then she loved it! Wish I could find it now, it was sweet. 😊

HeadNorth · 25/11/2024 07:28

It looks a bit pantomimie dame to me, but then I always thought Westwood was over rated. It's all a bit emporer's new clothes, for me.

LOL. Of course you are. Saying it doesn't make it so.

If you were, you would appreciate that even viral/ guerilla/subversive marketing is going to maintain a certain standard of visual quality for a brand standard. The photograph is too bad and low res/blurry as well as badly composed. Even if the aim was to make it talked about as a viral marketing campaign it wouldn't be that bad.

But you are claiming you are expert when you go on to say
Anyway, I don't actually use social media any more so really aren't in a place to comment as I don't see this stuff.

Sigh,

Yes, I don't use social media but I do use websites such as this one - MN - which has targeted advertising as do many many many other sites. (FB selling data is why I stopped using it a good decade ago.) Anyway, that's by the by, along with the fact I used to date someone at FB whose expertise was this stuff.

I find it really interesting, if not timely, that many brands do this as a way to reach new audiences who aren't influenced by, or even aware of their usual advertising. Additionally, and more importantly to a brand, in a sea of advertising dominated by polish and social platforms drowning in influencers, this is a way of a) doing something new and b) more authentic than paying an influencer. Back to my original point, it's about engagement and getting a brand talked about and like I said, there are far more positive comments about the ad than negative.

OP provided the link that proves it was directly from VW, not a scam site or fake ad for that matter. So yes, it's fair to say that I know my stuff 😘

NeedSomeHeadspace · 25/11/2024 17:55

It’s always fascinating what looks great to some people. This ad should not be an ad. Her makeup is dreadful and not representative of good style in an older woman. It actually looks like it’s a mockery of us middle aged women.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 25/11/2024 17:58

I asked VW if the ad was genuine.

Thank you for contacting the Vivienne Westwood online boutique. We appreciate that you are showing interest in our brand, and questioning possible fake/scam; however, the ads seems genuine, but I cannot confirm that 100%. I will suggest to shop directly to our official website. I enclosed link below.

I do feel that Vivienne herself would have approved, having seen her over the years around Battersea. It’s refreshing to see an older lady who looks herself for me. Each to their own 🤷‍♀️

It's a fun advert....she looks like somebodies tipsy aunt (which would explain the cardie done up wrong and the handbag and sausage roll platter).😂

I love the colours and patterns though. And she looks like she would be a hoot to celebrate with!

isitsnowingyett · 26/11/2024 20:41

It's called the drunken cardi 😂

Hi All
A lot to unpack here. I was there for this commercial so can confirm a few things.

1 It is s a genuine Westwood commercial.

2 The model is a indeed a lovely friendly woman.

I saw her get her makeup done and I (personally) found it heavy / distracting from her natural beauty. Particularly the heavy lashes / dark eye makeup (this happens a lot at weddings etc people want to make an effort and sometimes less really is more). But again the aim was for a retro heavy makeup look.
The model loved her makeup. She remarked how glam it was and seemed to really like it.
Again this is fashion - they tend to amplify an idea or style in an extreme way and when it trickles down to the high street it's a more diluted version. Look at all catwalks so many of them are bonkers...
---
The set varies this one was office Christmas party so naturally not as lovely as other locations. While I personally like the cardigan I can completely understand the poster not appreciating the styling. My mother and friends would despise both the pattern and the way its styled.

Happy to answer any questions x

I'm lost

has OP posted this thinking it was a genuine advertisement by Vivienne Westwood? It can't be.

It is 100% a genuine ad.

Agree with everyone that thinks Westwood herself would have absolutely loved this models bubbly character and look.

I knew it wasn't a man - some people see drag makeup and automatically think "man"!

Ilovetea33 · 27/11/2024 16:17

But if I go to Women's Knitwear on the official Vivienne Westwood website, I can't find that cardigan. So what's the point of the ad?

isitsnowingyett · 27/11/2024 16:47

I'm astounded at the lengths people have gone to check that this ad is real!

No time at all. Short email to customer services. I've reported fake ads/ fake sites to other brands I like.

Thank you!

I like her make-up, and the retro styling, but then I miss people being glamorous (my family is from the North West, where people like to get dressed up).

It's good that everyone can be as casual as they like now, but it would be nice if people didn't always come round for dinner in scruffy t-shirts and shorts.
