I get the dreaded camel toe in every pair of leggings I ever buy and it’s starting to piss me off

I’ve just bought a gorgeous pair of Sweaty Betty power leggings, and was so excited to put them on, but there it is again. It doesn’t matter whether they’re cheap, expensive, what brand, what fabric, it always happens.

it’s not because they’re too small or tight- I’m a size 10 and I’ve bought a high waist pair in medium, they’re actually a tiny bit baggy at the knees. I’m wondering if it’s because I’ve got narrow violin hips but chubby thighs, so they always rub at the top.

The only way I seem to be able to get rid of it is to wear them so low that I get a muffin top and they’re baggy and wrinkled everywhere else. Is there another solution?

They are baggy round the knees ,any bigger and theys be ridiculous. I think trying smaller might work as the material would stretch across iyswim?

Why don't you just try a larger pair and see if you're any more comfortable?

There's zero point telling yourself that you're a size 10 in these leggings when they don't fit you comfortably. You can either try a different size, or a different style, or most likely, both.

Btw, they are not high-waisted. You can clearly see on the model photos that they sit a couple of inches below the belly button on one model and just below the belly button on the other model. They are styled with a deep band around the top, but that band sits at the high hip/below waist on the models. The models have flat stomachs; on anyone more rounded, they will sit lower still.

Like other pp, I also thought they were pulling at the crotch on you because you had pulled them up too far, because there is not enough fabric in the size 10 to cover your hips/bum/belly.

Edited

These leggings aren’t size 10, they’re a medium, which according to the website is equal to a 12. So I’ve already gone up a size.

Why are people trying to tell the Op what clothes size she is for goodness sake. I think she knows ! Clothes size isn't the issue, we are women not Barbie dolls and unfortunately op if you don't like the look of your fanny in leggings you need to cover it up, there are worse problems at least 😆

There is no point anyone 'arguing' over sizes.
All brands are different, cuts and designs are different.

I'm an 8-10 in trousers and have had to go up to a 12 in some leggings (that are for outdoor sport not a 'fashion' item) and I've never been a 12.
And the reviews for that company are all the same- far too small and everyone is sizing up.

The point is, they just look too small across your hips and short in the rise (waistband to crotch.)

I'd forget about the size on the label and find some that have a longer waist to crotch.

If you have slim calves and they look baggy on the legs, maybe just accept that leggings aren't for you?

Is this for daywear or sport?
If it's for sport, wear a long T shirt.

Stravaig · 08/11/2024 15:09

Jeans are irrelevant.

One, clothes have had a massive size inflation in the past decade or so: today's size 10 jeans are a 14 or 16 of yesteryear. However, I'm not sure all activewear manufacturers got the memo! So size 10 leggings now could still be close to a size 10 then.

Two, leggings have a large stretch component, I think usually elastane, which normal clothes don't. You can wear a small size, and make it stretch to accommodate you, but it will also suck in and accentuate every lump and bump, which is what you're unhappy about.

As pps have said, different styles and different brands vary. If you won't go up a size, then try leggings in a different brand, with no central seam. Or try styles that looser at the hips/bum, like joggers, or harems. Plus, fabric composition matters - something with a lower lycra/elastane/stretch content will suck in less.

LemonSherbertDabs · 08/11/2024 15:13

Those leggings are not high-waisted.
The models with super-flat stomachs have them sitting 2 inches below the waist.

I think there's two different styles

I have the standard camo style and they show as below the belly button on the model. I'm 5ft 10 though and they're above my belly button, definitely not a low rise

buffyspikefaith · 08/11/2024 15:25

I'm fat and a size 18, this is pulled up just enough so the crotch isn't baggy
They sit about an inch above my belly button

Well, whichever way you look at it, they are just too small for the OP.

Leggings aren't for everyone as we're all different shapes and sizes.
I think the issue is with that style, her calves are slimmer in proportion to her thighs. I don't think her hips are especially narrow- look pretty normal to me - and the leggings are not the right fit.

CocoDC · 08/11/2024 15:32

I think this is because you’re wearing them high waisted when you don’t really have much of a waist / hips. Try mid rise or v-waist / wrap waist shapes - they may suit you more.

Vax · 08/11/2024 15:40

I would just stick some googly eyes above the camel toe on and own the look.

buffyspikefaith · 08/11/2024 15:45

I think it depends what you're wearing them for too
I'm probably too fat to wear leggings but nothing else really works for spin classes but I do them at home so camel toe not an issue!
If I was wanting to wear them out and about I would return as they're not cheap

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 08/11/2024 15:59

You are the wrong shape for leggings Op

HappyFitnessQueen · 08/11/2024 16:00

You need to go for seamless pairs - check out Gymshark and Pursue Fitness. These SB say they're high waisted but they aren't and the fit isn't working for your shape. Mid rise is probably more flattering for you in any case.

buffyspikefaith · 08/11/2024 16:05

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 08/11/2024 15:59

You are the wrong shape for leggings Op

Nobody is the wrong shape for leggings depending what they're wearing with them
What else are you going to wear to do a spin class for example? You can't wear anything flappy or loose
No wonder women get put off exercise

boysinbars · 08/11/2024 16:11

“The wrong shape for leggings” what 💩
OP I’m going to buck the trend and ask if you tried smaller. sorry if you are repeating yourself but it’s a long thread so I may have missed a few posts. I’m more or less a 10 (sometimes an 8) and I find the xs have a better fit in power. I didn’t get along with the high waist version. Try the size S or even XS regular power.
some SB styles don’t work on me at all - eg I had to go to lululemon for shorts.

OuterSpaceCadet · 08/11/2024 16:17

It's really fucking sad that "the wrong shape for leggings" is something someone would ever post, especially on MN.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 08/11/2024 16:27

Every pair the Op has ever tried results in a camel toe. She doesn't want to wear a top that hides it. She 'is' the wrong shape for leggings, they give her camel toe. Not everyone can wear everything and get the result they want every time. I can't wear round necks. I'm too large chested. I'm the wrong shape for them. HTH all the flappers (no pun intended) Grin

Petrine · 08/11/2024 16:38

@OuterSpaceCadet The OP has tried all sorts of leggings and gets the same result, which she isn’t happy with. The obvious solution is to wear something else which is flattering. No-one has to wear leggings and many people don’t look good in them. Of course the OP could continue to wear them if she wants - though I can’t see the point in doing so if she’s not happy with the way they look.

This is a good point, I usually size down in sweaty Betty anyway.

ignore the wrong shape for leggings comments 🙄

It is OP herself that has the problem with her having a camel toe in leggings though? If she doesn't like the look of herself in leggings then erm don't wear them or wear a long top. No one is saying she isn't allowed to!

TorroFerney · 08/11/2024 18:13

Fluufer · 07/11/2024 20:38

That's not camel toe. That's just because of the shape of your hips/thighs. The seam isn't helping though.
Everything isn't flattering for everyone. Either wear something else, or just accept that they aren't the most flattering on you.

Was going to say that, thought I was going mad, camel toe is when it goes up your bits - ops is her pubic mound I think so the front view. Op how often are you wearing them? Assume it's for the gym ?

Rosequartz7 · 08/11/2024 18:24

You can get camel toe concealers, might be worth a try? I haven't tried them and not sure how I know this information 😅 but I googled and they are a thing!

AngeloMysterioso · 08/11/2024 18:26

It’s mostly for the gym but also occasionally for day to day- I don’t like wearing jeans all the time but also don’t always want to be in sweatpants or joggers.

I ended up going into M&S today and getting the goodmove leggings- the style is virtually identical but thicker, less stretchy fabric, and they actually look ok- I got a 10 and a 12, I think the 10s actually look marginally better but will see how they look tomorrow in the cold light of day!
