I get the dreaded camel toe in every pair of leggings I ever buy and it’s starting to piss me off

I’ve just bought a gorgeous pair of Sweaty Betty power leggings, and was so excited to put them on, but there it is again. It doesn’t matter whether they’re cheap, expensive, what brand, what fabric, it always happens.

it’s not because they’re too small or tight- I’m a size 10 and I’ve bought a high waist pair in medium, they’re actually a tiny bit baggy at the knees. I’m wondering if it’s because I’ve got narrow violin hips but chubby thighs, so they always rub at the top.

The only way I seem to be able to get rid of it is to wear them so low that I get a muffin top and they’re baggy and wrinkled everywhere else. Is there another solution?

A strategically positioned panty liner will do the trick.

ForPearlViper · 07/11/2024 22:27

I thing you are probably long-bodied/high waisted like me. Just a suggestion for you before you go and and buy a whole pile these suggestions online. Go to a real shop, one that does their trousers, etc, in different lengths, M&S and Next spring to mind and try on leggings, etc, in long or tall. Often they will have adapted the fit in these for as slightly longer body.

If they fit around the crotch but the legs are to long, just take the legs up. Wonderweb and a cool iron are your friend.

DollopOfFun · 07/11/2024 22:38

Honey that's a hoof and a half. Return those leggings, they are foe not friend.

Agree with PP that back in the day, it was never an issue as leggings were Not Trousers. Although to be fair, some of my trousers were so low rise, you could probably spot the top of my camel toe crease at the 'waist' band.

You can have thighs that touch at any size, it depends on the shape of your body, particularly your hips. And if I’m not a size 10, how come all my size 10 clothes fit me?

I only get a muffin top when I pull the waistband lower than it should be (ie no longer round the waist but between my waist and hips, which is wider) to mitigate the CT problem. When the waistband is where the waistband is meant to be it fits perfectly.

Thanks for the low-key fat shaming though.

I don’t think the poster was calling you fat or even shaming you if you were. I think they were just saying you’re a size up.

Flossflower · 07/11/2024 23:09

OP, I usually wear size 10 clothes but as my thighs are large so no way could I wear a size 10 in leggings. I think there are a number of things added together that make the camel toe but clearly you don’t have enough room in that area. I also think getting leggings without a centre seam would be better.

So agree! Years ago you never wore leggings without a top that covered your hoof/crack...it's just like wearing thick tights really. I def wouldn't be using a pad/liner to disguise it if you are exercising...just think of the moisture you'd be trapping 😩

BurntBroccoli · 08/11/2024 01:13

Think black is a better option.
You can also get fabric sanitary pads that are actually really good for hiding camel toe. You just need to pull them round the from a bit.

coxesorangepippin · 08/11/2024 01:16

I don't think you're a size 10 OP. I'm a 12 and my thighs don't touch at the top like yours do and I only have a tiny bit of muffin top in jeans with zero elastane when I'm sat down

I can't be bothered to read 4 pages of camel-toe related replies so this may already have been said, but you need leggings that have a diamond/triangular shaped gusset insert rather than the seem down the middle. Rainbows and Sprinkles sell these, I may a multitude of pairs without a camel in sight! Look out for their sales and offers.

Superfrog1 · 08/11/2024 01:54

Just home from a single mums nights out and reading the headline has made me smile 😊 thank you!!

Thebellofstclements · 08/11/2024 03:19

You've pulled them up too high.

TriangleLight · 08/11/2024 04:49

my tips are: never a centre seam, in knickers or leggings; black is less likely to show graphic bits; Nike pros are great leggings. I live in mine as I do a lot of sport.

murphys · 08/11/2024 05:16

You aren't alone OP.

I have been searching for a pair that doesn't accentuate the foof for ages now. I have given up online as I have to try them on.

The worst offenders for me are the more pricing ones with the diamond insert. Not only do they give me camel toe, but they give this weird fold in the gusset making me look like I have a saggy fanny. (I don't think I do as it's perfectly well behaved if I wear anything else fairly tight).
I am very much in the long torso club so I think that is a factor.

I recently found a pair that fit me so well. A completely unbranded pair which I found in a shop selling Chinese imports (let's not judge please) and they fit me perfectly and no camel toe or gusset wrinkles. They don't have the diamond in the gusset either. OK the sizing is a bit odd as I have to size up twice. Hence why I suggest you try everthing on in store.

Worst offenders for me:
Adidas
Lululemon
Lululemon dupe
Under Armour
Old Navy
Nike
Victoria Secret
Lorna Jane

And I end up preferring the cheapest by a mile.

If you're willing to try a different approach, Apostrophe Patterns will make a sewing pattern based on your measurements and the stretchiness of the fabric you'll be using and the leggings will fit perfectly. You buy the pattern once and you can then generate as many as you like in different sizes or with different options. Perfect leggings for the rest of your life.

Leggings are a straightforward and quick make, so are easy to do with basic sewing skills and should not be expensive for a dressmaker.

EmpressOfTheThread · 08/11/2024 06:54

As others have said, size up. You're not a "size 10" because unfortunately, sizing is not standard in women's clothing, so wear what fits. A larger size won't pull in that area. This does not imply that you are overweight.
The centre seam is a ridiculous design, really, but it does keep costs down.

BigButtons · 08/11/2024 06:57

rugbyclub · 07/11/2024 19:09

I don't think you're a size 10 OP. I'm a 12 and my thighs don't touch at the top like yours do and I only have a tiny bit of muffin top in jeans with zero elastane when I'm sat down. If you're getting a muffin top in stretchy leggings, especially ones with a wide waiste-band like those, you're surely bigger than a 10. The centre seam isn't helping, but can't you see that your body shape is totally different to the models?

Edited

I am a size 6/8 and my thighs touch. My hips are narrow. My thighs are slim but they still touch because of my hips. That should be obvious to anyone.

anon2022anon · 08/11/2024 07:04

Fairly sure it's because you have a long torso. I struggle with this. I appreciate those are high waisted, but not the right length between the crotch and the waist to hit the right points for where the waist/ hip points should be if that makes sense.

It's a brand thing, you need to keep trying several brands, or maybe try a tall version to see (I've sometimes worn a tall cropped trousers as full length, to get the ratio of the body length right).

I've heard good things about Amazon leggings

TandyhatesAmanda · 08/11/2024 07:14

You need the mumsnet leggings, I have about 10 pairs and wear little else these days. From Amazon

curious79 · 08/11/2024 07:21

My SBs don’t show camel toe at all. I’m afraid you may have a podgy mons and need a camel toe hider

SabrinaCarpentersCeilingFan · 08/11/2024 07:27

BleachedJumper · 07/11/2024 18:07

Have you tried different underwear/no underwear?

Corr if I wore leggings without underwear my fanny would look like an empty hotdog roll

HelenHywater · 08/11/2024 07:30

She doesn't need to size up - you can see these are too big because they're baggy at the knee, any larger size would be way too big.

If you've tried lots of other pairs of leggings OP and still have this problem, it must just be your shape. In which case you've either got to embrace it, or wear something else.

Leggings don’t work for everyone! May just be that op. Nothing wrong with your body.

Just what I thought. Do you have to wear leggings? Is this for the gym or exercise? I just never wear leggings because I look awful in them.

I make my own leggings but I have an overlocker and a cover stitch machine. The biggest problem with making my own leggings is finding fabric that is thick enough.

It annoys the hell out of me that women have been conditioned to be ashamed about the natural shape of a part of their body. In close fitting clothes it's going to show!

Do men try and hide their trouser bulge? Absolutely not.

😂 Im not sure which men you know but the ones I know don’t wear skin tight leggings (unless they are ballet dancers) which show their “bulge”.

@AngeloMysterioso as others have said try different makes of leggings, the central seam line is NOT helping the issue.
