Three quarter sleeved jumpers - why?

Occasionally I see these and I'm always baffled, who wants to be cold, or have something that bunches up when you wear a coat.

There is no point to jumpers with 3/4 sleeves. Likewise, short-sleeved jackets. If it's cold enough for a jumper or jacket, it's cold enough for full sleeves.

You do realise there are different fabrics and fibres don't you.
A cotton knit is quite different from yak hair

LikeTalkingToLassie · 02/11/2024 09:49

There are different fabrics? Every day a school day, eh. Smile
I know someone who loves 3/4 sleeves but it's because she is overweight and has to size up in tops. As a result, jumpers tend to be too big on the shoulders, making the sleeves seem longer.

I love ¾ length sleeves - I think they look elegant. I hate anything which comes down over my wrists onto the top of my hand.

Don't your wrists get cold in winter? I have long arms and need to have my wrists covered to feel warm.

neilyoungismyhero · 02/11/2024 09:58

Me..I don't have giraffe like arms and so three quarter sleeves are much more comfortable.

I also think they look elegant, in fact I have a boucle coat with 3/4 sleeves. I bought a pair of extra long gloves to wear with it.
I feel so Doris Day when I wear them!

Now cold shoulder tops I don't understand.

If you have long arms then you wouldn't need 3/4 sleeves to keep things back off your hands.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 02/11/2024 10:28

I hate the feeling of something on my wrists and I don’t like sleeves getting wet when I’m washing. 3/4 are ideal.

RampantIvy · 02/11/2024 10:29

Does no-one wear washing up gloves? If I am in long sleeves they tuck into my Marigolds and don't get wet.

ExquisiteIyDesigned · 02/11/2024 11:32

It's not just washing dishes but long sleeves get wet washing your hands. They get in the way all the time, I really can't wear them unless it is a properly formal outfit where I have to e.g. suit jacket.

Believe it or not, I own a sewing machine and know how to use it.

If it's cold enough for the kind of fabric that's heavy enough for the garment to be described as a "jumper" and not a "long-sleeved t-shirt", it's cold enough for full sleeves. Blue fingernails isn't a flattering look.

Can't you just push the sleeves up?
Long sleeved jumpers just reach my wrist. They don't go over my wrists and therefore don't get in the way of hand washing or dish washing.

downwindofyou · 02/11/2024 16:01

@RampantIvy
Yes. As you've already said, you have long arms. Many people don't. Does it not occur to you that this anatomical difference makes all the difference between your experience and other people's when it comes to irritating sleeve length?

In my world, a sheer cotton jumper is a world away from an alpaca and cashmere cable knit
🙄

No. When I go to the bathroom I don't wear rubber gloves. Kind of defeats the purpose of washing no?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/11/2024 16:04

I find 3/4 sleeve ok on cooler summer days but not much use in winter.

Erm, doing the washing up is a term for washing dishes, not washing hands. Are you not in the UK?

I file those ornamental see-through garments under "going out tops".

I've never tried doing the washing up in the bathroom. Ugh!
Where do you drain the dishes?

WhatsitWiggle · 02/11/2024 19:31

Me! I don't really like the feeling of cuffs on my wrists, so even full length jumpers are always rolled up.

Ooh, I've found my people on this thread. I'm not the only one.

FoxRedPuppy · 02/11/2024 19:41

I love them. I hate the feeling of anything on my wrists. I don’t think I’ve ever had cold wrists!

@minisomum, House of Bruar have merino ones in the sale.
They've also got a few other ¾ sleeve boat necks.

OMG, I love those!!!
I’m really tired and I can’t think, if I’m a size 14 on top, what size do I need, can someone tell me, please?

Singleandproud · 02/11/2024 19:44

I have orangutan arms and sleeves always end up too short once washed and I hate things flapping around my wrists so perfect for me.

However I often wear wrist warmers so have my forearm covered without the flapping anyway.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 02/11/2024 19:48

We have to be bare below the elbow (nhs) so 3/4 sleeves are ideal for not freezing to death whilst at work in winter!

RachelNoire · 02/11/2024 19:54

I think they’re known as bracelet sleeves and I hate them. I’m petite and don’t like sleeves or material around my wrist but I can’t bear the feeling of the material coming up short on my forearm either. So I’m probably a bit weird but I’ve always had issues with textures and various pieces of clothing.

Some dressy coats are fine with them though. Not for everyday wear though.
