I see women in leggings or jersey trousers with short tops and they don't have a VPL. how?!?! Please tell me I don't have to resort to thongs

What size swimming suit would you buy? Is that pant-size or trouser size?
Would you describe yourself as pear shaped?

No I’m an hourglass and quite well balanced thank you very much. I wear bra-sized swimwear so 32E full cossie. I’ve also got an MnS bikini in 32E top and 16 bottoms OF COURSE 😆

All brands 12 tops and frocks, Mint Velvet medium frocks and 12 jeans, Uniqlo small dresses, small or medium leggings. I’m just a normal 12 🤷🏼‍♀️

PatsyPatsysaid · 02/10/2024 15:18

Bellywarmers in a generous size

Err, even they have leg-holes in them!

honestasever · 02/10/2024 16:38

Commando

I find thongs really comfy...I do also wear seamless, microfibre pants that are also good but not as invisible as a thong, I get mine from Intimissimi.

I wasn’t being judgemental just interested. This isn’t my experience of sizing (where my pant size is smaller than my trouser size I accept that I am a freak different body type, I just wondered what people with this size disparity where like. If it helps I’m thick/no waisted with almost no bum.

LostOnTheWayToManderley · 02/10/2024 17:54

@Ohthatsabitshit Hmmm I don’t see it as a size disparity, exactly. I expect size 12 knickers would technically fit but I think the waistline would be taut and more noticeable, so the finish looks better when they’re bigger somehow.

Gwenhwyfar · 02/10/2024 18:37

Don't wear such thin leggings that your knickers show.

I don’t buy this ‘wear thick leggings’ thing at all. And it’s not about knickers showing through but about the line/bump showing. Leggings don’t have to be thin for a knicker line to show.

SaltyLemons · 02/10/2024 19:45

I don't tend to wear leggings but I do like a jersey pant/trouser and am just conscious of the knicks

I’m apple shaped if anything (used to be straight pre perimenopause). All my clothing is 12-14, including swimwear. All knickers are a 14 or 16.

Cobblersorchard · 02/10/2024 20:22

@Gwenhwyfar sorry I don’t know why I quoted you, was an error!

But even my very thick yoga pants have VPL in the wrong knickers, as do my tailored work trousers. It’s nothing specific to leggings being thin.

Completely agree

Dunno I just think it looks a bit unpolished

Wearing leggings is hardly "polished" but having a VPL is "unpolished"😅

ForGreyKoala · 02/10/2024 21:52

Completelyjo · 02/10/2024 06:02

It’s not just knicker lines though it’s unsuitable underwear for your clothes, a lumpy lace bra under a thin t shirt, black straps under a thin strapped top and a bulky knicker line under leggings or fitted skirts or trousers.

No one is going to comment on it but most will think it looks messy and lazy.

While I think leggings are comfortable (don't wear them myself) they are hardly the height of elegance so why are people so concerned about having a VPL? I don't actually wear "unsuitable underwear for my clothes" but a VPL is noticeable under most clothing worn on the botton half, unless it's very thick. Most knicker lines are hardly bulky. I don't see many thongs in the stores here (not the UK), certainly they don't seem to be sold in the numbers they used to be, so most women seem to have worken up.

Also, having followed many women down the street with tight leggings where it is quite obvious that they are wearing a thong, it's not a look I wish to aspire to!!

We all don't. Not all the time anyway. I certainly don’t under slinky dresses unless they are very short. In which case I wear thongs, usually two sizes bigger than my dress size to stop them digging in at the waist.

As somebody upthread said, it isn’t so much about the knickers being visible, it’s more about the unsightly extra bumps and indentations that some knickers produce. I prefer my bum to have a smooth outline, not a lumpy bumpy one. If you don’t care that’s fine. I do though.

Many of the people I see wearing thongs (or nothing) under leggings or tight clothing do have unsightly bumps - not everyone is blessed with a pert bum. I really think most people don't check out their back view before leaving the house.

bendmeoverbackwards · 02/10/2024 00:21

Can someone explain why VPL is so bad? We all wear knickers 🤔

Same reason bulging bits on your back where your bra is is unattractive. Or a dress/top that clings to belly rolls.
It just looks messy when things aren't smooth. Lumpy bumpy bits may be normal but they mess up an outfit

biglipslittlehips · 02/10/2024 22:07

Doingmybest12 · 02/10/2024 06:15

People are mistaken if they think thongs don't show a VPL. They often do. Fine if you don't mind but it often obvious.

I think we are quite capable of telling whether we gave a panty line

biglipslittlehips · 02/10/2024 22:08

Doingmybest12 · 02/10/2024 06:22

At risk of sounding like I'm staring at too many bottoms, they do show through leggings and it is often possible to see that butt cheeks look separated by the thong and cheeks are looking unsupported , can't think of a different word, uncovered. As I say, fine if the wearer is ok with this.

Not if you wear quality leggings

User19876536484 · 02/10/2024 22:12

Or they buy them online. Like I do. There’s plenty of choice.

biglipslittlehips · 02/10/2024 22:13

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2024 10:55

maybe the clothes are “vanity size” but the pants have remained butt sized, but if you routinely buy a size 12 it must take some effort to persuade yourself you are really an 8.

Wow you really are bothered by someone who fits a size 6 trouser choosing to wear a size 10 pant aren't you.
It's very normal to wear a bigger pant to avoid pant lines. Pants through size fit well but under trousers you don't need them to fit snugly. The trouser holds them up so going up a size or two means they rest on the bottom and tuck under the buttocks so you can minimise VPL.
I'm a size 8 but sometimes choose to buy a hoodie in a 12 or L because I want it big and oversized. That must blue your mind.
No idea why this is so challenging for you

HelenHywater · 02/10/2024 22:16

I don't really care about a VPL and generally wear microfibre short knickers under leggings. But I have to say, when you're behind a load of people at yoga, you really can tell if people are wearing thongs or if they're commando. From this perspective, big pants should be the only option.

You sound weirdly defensive. It’s fine if you are a 12, it’s fine if you are not. I explained up thread that this was very different than my experience. Most people don’t really care what number is on their pants. I can’t imagine choosing to wear pants so large they need to be held up by my trousers as you describe or wearing pants so tight they dig into my flesh. I don’t really care if those are your preferred sizes. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just own it though.

Surely personal choice that has no impact on anyone else? Yoga should be an occasion when nobody is bothered about their knicker lines, let alone someone else's or worry that another person would be concerned?

Commando is fine for any sort of sportswear that is going straight in the wash. I don’t own any big knickers, so should that exclude me from a yoga class?

RugbyMom123 · 03/10/2024 02:03

Crazily the best I have found are lace on the back Tesco pants. Not sure if they are even anti vpl but they work perfect.
