How do people not have a knicker line?

I see women in leggings or jersey trousers with short tops and they don't have a VPL. how?!?! Please tell me I don't have to resort to thongs

OP posts:

I've never understood thongs, but then I get a bit lost about the reason for pants too. If pants are an item to preserve the length of wear of an item, then why are we washing the outer items so frequently? And is that is the function of pants, then thongs are only doing half a job if you see what i mean.

In answer to your question though. I don't have vpl, or at least i didn't up until i stopped wearing skinnies a few years back. My solution was to wear a full pant, so the seam around the leg fell below my bottom rather than cutting across it.

dudsville · 02/10/2024 09:00

Forgot to add, I wear wide leg joggers to the gym too!

Surely these ARE the correct size if they don’t dig in and your other clothes are too small?

Not at all! My trousers are size 6. Any bigger and they are just enormous on me, with lots of excess fabric everywhere, huge gaping waist etc etc. Size 10 trousers would look like I'm wearing someone else's clothes which are far, far too big for me. My knickers are size 10 though. I mean I could wear knickers in 6 or 8 which would be perfectly comfortable, but I wouldn't get a smooth silhouette.

Can someone explain why VPL is so bad? We all wear knickers 🤔

We all don't. Not all the time anyway. I certainly don’t under slinky dresses unless they are very short. In which case I wear thongs, usually two sizes bigger than my dress size to stop them digging in at the waist.

As somebody upthread said, it isn’t so much about the knickers being visible, it’s more about the unsightly extra bumps and indentations that some knickers produce. I prefer my bum to have a smooth outline, not a lumpy bumpy one. If you don’t care that’s fine. I do though.

H34th · 02/10/2024 10:14

For people that say thongs are super comfortable and they don't even feel them - but have you tried wearing proper pants recently?
Just because you're super used to something it doesn't mean it's the actual best option for you.

I'm pretty sure they were not invented with a woman's comfort in mind. You literally have something stuck between your back cheeks all the time. It's honestly better if you don't.

In the warm weather, l often don’t wear knix with long summer dresses. Obviously different if I’m on a period.

If you are wearing the right size they sit between hour bum cheeks, not get stuck in.

I think that sounds improbable.

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2024 10:36

It isn't. I am the same size as @thecatneuterer
Clothes in a size or two larger hang like tents. For whatever reason, probably the stretch in them, knickers in the same dress size as my clothes don't fit. I have known this for probably 20 years at this point, and it is independent of my actual current weight, as I have been both bigger and smaller.
There are a lot of women on this thread saying they buy knickers two sizes bigger. 🤷‍♀️

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2024 10:55

maybe the clothes are “vanity size” but the pants have remained butt sized, but if you routinely buy a size 12 it must take some effort to persuade yourself you are really an 8.

Cobblersorchard · 02/10/2024 10:57

I always buy 1 size bigger for all pants, but agree that 2 sizes can look much better. Pants do come up small and look better bigger under clothes.

I’m a 12-14 in trousers, 16 in pants. I don’t own anything else in a size 16 though.

Absolutely. Maybe clothes and knickers are sized differently. After all, back in 1978 I was exactly the same size as I am now but was a size 10. But regardless, people would naturally assume they should buy knickers in the same size as their trousers. However a few of us are advising to go two sizes up to avoid lumpy bum cheeks. Who cares why this is necessary, or what the sizes "really" are. This is a trick that works.

That depends on if my size is my dress size or my knicker size. I find most commonly it is better to buy clothes that fit rather than decide I am a 12 because size 12 knickers fit best and then buy jeans that spend the day round my ankles after they fall off because they are too large!
I have adjusted where I shop because of vanity sizing. A lot of places I used to go to, their 6-8 clothes are now what I would consider a 10-12 and they are too big for me.

Ohthatsabitshit · 02/10/2024 11:35

I find sizing incredibly irritating. I’m not at all interested in a smaller number, I’m interested in knowing what size fits me (and not having to change it to accommodate mad pants/trouser rules).

GladAllOver · 02/10/2024 12:27

Big knickers here under trousers, nothing under dresses. Never felt comfortable in thongs.
Someone up thread mentioned bra lines. To me they are just the same as knicker lines. Why make such a thing of knicker lines but show then the outline of your bra? It's much more in the face.

They tend to sit smooth on top of your skin and don’t cut in like knickers do on your bum.

BoxOfCards · 02/10/2024 13:14

I wear big, seamless pants that cover entire bum

I also wear good quality thick leggings which makes a massive difference

I wear big knickers for a couple of days a month when I use pads. I find them very uncomfortable and can't wait for my bloody period to finish so I can go back to thongs. Which is why I said I find thongs more comfortable. Very bizarre that you think you have more insight into the comfort of my underwear than I do! But if you say it's honestly better that I abandon thongs, how could I possibly argue - I thank you for your concern and will definitely bear it in mind when choosing my knickers, random person on the internet.

Another “nothing under dresses”🥰. In colder weather, if you wear dresses and skirts with the Autograph tights that come with a “realistic” sized cotton gusset, you really don’t need knickers at all. The tights stop up better without the double layer too; the top adheres to your skin. And no VPL under tighter skirts.

@rumblegrumble aw, you're more than welcome

I do exactly the same, albeit I’m bigger than @thecatneuterer. I am and always have been a 12. (One pair of trousers in an alleged 10 which I absolutely know are vanity sized as the waist is bigger than my 12s; go figure.) I always buy a 16 in knickers, high leg briefs for preference. They don’t bunch, or flap, or fall down. I just don’t know I’m wearing them and they sit super smoothly so I never get VPL. I’m nearly 53 and have been doing this since I was in my 20s.

What size swimming suit would you buy? Is that pant-size or trouser size?
Would you describe yourself as pear shaped?

A properly fitted bra shouldn't press in like tight knickers, but the top edge of the cups often shows. Plus the strap across the back, that's almost to hide under a thin top.

This is my approach too. My normal cotton knickers feel too bulky under gym legging and I am not wearing a thong under any circumstances. Not heard of this buying them sizes bigger either - I was advised to buy a couple of sizes up when I had a laparoscopy and there's no way they would stay up under normal circumstances.
