The annual hunt for a dress like this that doesn’t exist

Honestly, been searching for a dress like this for about 10years… any help you can give is very much appreciated.

I want a dress that is:

Roll neck (proper high polo neck)
Maxi length- no splits
Knitted- in some sort of wool/natural fabric, not polyester or acrylic that gives off sparks
Not ribbed- you’d be surprised how many this rules out!
Black or brown

Sounds like you’re v particular about it OP. Can you buy the exact fabric you want and get the exact cut and length, fit and detailing you want by going to a seamstress?

I had one in black exactly as you describe from Dorothy Perkins or Wallis (i cant remember which as they are the same shop in our town) but this was about 5 years ago now however you may find it on Vinted ?

I was in Jigsaw earlier, they literally had 4 different ones that suit your brief

Sorry OP, it doesn’t sound like a flattering or practical dress - you want full length dress, but no slits so there’s going to be lots of swishy fabric around the bottom to allow for walking, but also made of wool for wearing in the winter, which in the UK means wearing in the rain. Lots of wet wool around your ankles soaking up water.

it’s not something most women would buy for practical reasons so that’s probably why you can’t find it, as all the allowances to make a knitted dress more practical (making it midi length, or straight skirt with slits to be less billowy at the bottom, or fabrics that are less likely to soak up water) are reasons you’d reject it.

if I was you, I’d get someone to make one for you. But be prepared to spend a lot of time hand washing it.

Strikes me it's the sort of thing which would be a nightmare to wash and would loose its shape very quickly due to sitting etc and the material?

I am not bothered about flattering.

I don’t want it floor-skimming so not worried about it getting wet in the rain. I wear long skirts and dresses in the winter quite often, added bonus of being warm.

It’s the dress I want, and I will not be talked out of it; just need some bugger to make one…

It's not wool. But I have one from Tesco in grey, it was today in Poland last winter with thermal tights and docs

In addition to my comment about getting it made, I wonder if you could find one in a tall range/shop/website if they exist? Mind you, I’m assuming you’re not that tall! If I wore a mid calf dress from a tall range it’d be around my ankles. Sorry if this was suggested. I must admit I haven’t read every single post.

They aren’t going to though. The pattern would be a complete bugger and no-one apart from you would buy it as it would look pretty shit. It would be quicker to learn to knit one yourself…
