How do you dress to look slightly saucy at a 14 + not tarty
For a dinner date

It's cute, and it's sweet, but it is not saucy.

I beg to differ in this case! OP's going to dinner, not performing at a burlesque club, so 'saucy' means flattering to her developed body. A stretch, crossover V-neck enhances the bust. The frill at the hem should look enticingly flippy with well-curved hips. It's a very easy wear, which would matter to a woman who normally dresses for comfort.

Roman sizes are generous and this dress is stretchy, so I'd suggest trying it in a 12 with a plunge or balcony bra - or no bra - as well as your usual 14 (returns cost £3 unless you happened on an offer).

Whatever you choose, @pnutter, I hope you have fun! Let us know how it goes, please!

It depends really. Team it up with some great shoes, underwear and make up that helps you feel sexy and you're looking and feeling good. I would feel anything but saucy in an obvious 'sexy' look. I've always felt my best in clothes that I feel like me in.

BusterGonad · 11/09/2024 12:05

@Seas164 I've literally just said what you've said, sorry, I didn't read all the replies.

go wobbling into the restaurant

Bit rude

Wobbling in high heels she's not used to - surely that's what was meant. It's your mind that instantly went to fat = wobbly.

Well, as OP put fat in her title, I presumed that's where your mind went.

Hello, 1988!

Yup. God bless the 80s

Pinkstegosaurus · 11/09/2024 13:38

I love Never Fully Dressed as a size 14, I’ve had a few of their wrap dresses and felt brilliant in them. They usually have photos of the models in different sizes as well.

Eh? That doesn't make any sense.

Newsenmum · 11/09/2024 13:41

what colours suit you? Do you know if you’re warm or cool toned? Eye colour? Focus on colours that bring out your best features.

Newsenmum · 11/09/2024 13:44

I can’t be the only one who doesn’t like the Roman dress? I think florals can look ageing especially if you’re on the bigger size. It’s also not especially saucy?

Comedycook · 11/09/2024 13:48

Can't go wrong with a little black dress. Legs or cleavage 😂
Add some jewellery, heels and a clutch bag. Do your make up and hair...

Genuine question - don’t men (at least the intelligent ones) prefer women who look as if they know which century and decade they’re living in?

If my date turned up dressed as if he had no idea of, nor access to prevailing trends in clothing, it would be a definite ick for me. I don’t mean straight off the Balenciaga catwalk, but at least in keeping with contemporary ideas around formality / informality when dining out in the UK.

I mean if you turn up dressed like a reject from the 1980s, most men would raise an eyebrow I'm sure. However, I actually don't think your average man places more emphasis on fashion trends than simply looking good.

Possibly, but most men don't have much idea about fashion in my experience. Which dresses/outfits are you referring to as being hopelessly out of date? The pencil skirt and heels? Fair enough - but I still think most men would find that more attractive than some of the more fashion forward stuff, and definitely more than that awful tortoiseshell/wisteria dress

I wish we had the resources and inclination to set up a scientific study 😁

What? I don’t know current fashion trends let alone my husband 🤣

Agree.

I also think a lot of the choices suggested here are very much items that other women will admire rather than men.

Nothing wrong with that necessarily but just not what the op was asking for.

JMAngel1 · 11/09/2024 14:23

Pencil skirts are absolutely not out. And neither is a kitten heel. Both firmly back in.

I would wear a leather pencil wrap skirt with a tucked in silk cami and either kitten heel mules or kitten heel knee high boots depending on the weather. Lots of tactile fabrics will make it look more “saucy”.
Nothing posted above could be construed as sexy - as a rule avoid frills/prints and keep outfits streamlined and skimming over curves to hug them. The kitten heel gives you a wiggle (decidedly not a wobble!)

My husband would notice and like the Klements dress. Pretty certain my son would too. The Roman dress is an inoffensive day dress.

IshallCometh · 11/09/2024 14:27

Aw I like @Seas164 suggestion with silky shirt and jeans. Comfort and confidence exude sexiness.
@Idontjetwashthefucker You've made it rude and awkward by pointing it out because you made it associated with fatness when it was obviously about being always in garden geer and suddenly in high heels that she isn't used to wearing. You're the rude one actually, not Seas164. People have done what you've done in real life and made things worse or more awkward and sometimes it was intentionally bitchy to fake outrage and defending something that wasn't even there to defend.

Kitten heels are never, ever “in” 🤮. The pencil skirt and blouse look is very overdone and outdated and you cannot seriously be suggesting the poor OP wears a leather pencil skirt and knee boots?! She’ll look like a hooker fgs.

OP I would go for something like one of the two red dresses posted up thread. Sophisticated and a bit sexy but without looking too try hard and will likely flatter your figure.

I don’t think a 14 is fat.

I'm Size 14 and I'm fat.

I personally wouldn’t go for jeans and don’t look very dressy and not always flattering if you’re bigger.
