With just under 3 months to go until 1 December, there are some big decisions to be made! Thread to discuss advent calendars while we wait for more content revelations and release dates.

Someone commented earlier about how it was generally frowned upon to resell any extras? Please can I ask why this is? I don't want to do the wrong thing. Id been wondering whether to sell any extras I won't use on vinted. In the past I've also been able to purchase a few items I've liked from beauty boxes without having to buy the whole box.

That’s the first time I’ve heard this. EBay and Vinted are brimming with AC products every year! People buy them just to resell the entire contents.

I had no idea it was frowned on. I’m delighted when people sell items I really like on Vinted. I really like the liquid eye patch cream we got in the last BD box and bought a second jar on Vinted immediately. Equally I really liked one of the scents in a previous advent calendar and picked up a couple more. It’s a win/win situation.

@Moofart - lots of people resell things they won’t use. I have to say I’m not keen n people multi buying lots of calendars just to sell on at inflated prices but don’t see an issue with selling bits from a calendar that you won’t use. Much better than just throwing stuff away.

There are no rules. Lots of posters sell things on. Personally, I think it's a better option than binning or leaving unused bits languishing in a drawer, particularly from an environmental perspective. It also makes it more affordable to buy the calendar if you sell some bits.

I don't sell but I have a dd who is usually happy to take bits I don't want so it still gets used. Another option would be to donate them. Food banks and refuges will often accept toiletries. I'd imagine refuges would also take make-up.

Agreed. Buying multiples to sell on, particularly of a calendar that will sell out quickly is a bit like touts buying up tickets for a popular concert.

Nothing wrong with it. I always sell stuff that I won't use (and quite often buy stuff that I like from other calendars to replace it with!)

JudgeBurrito · 06/09/2024 09:34

@Moofart as PP said selling extras is one thing, but in previous years we've had people coming onto the threads saying how they've already bought a calendar at this time of year, opened it, sold 90% of it, and used the money to buy another one to do the same. It just takes away from the fun IMO, and also reduces the stock available for people who actually want an advent calendar and not a side hustle..!

I do like the idea of getting the 12 day perfume calendar and opening one a month. I can't remember who posted that (@Puravida23 or @Peridot1 maybe?) but that's genius. Gives you time to really appreciate and use each scent.

I got an email to say CB Scent with Love is almost sold out. Do we believe them? I wonder if they produced a very limited amount of that one.

MidnightMeltdown · 06/09/2024 09:37

I have black lashes. The dark brown Eyeko mascara from the M&S AC looked fine on me.

@Housewife2010 My hair is a chestnut brown colour so I might have got away with it if the mascara was a similar colour, but the one in Stylevana was an ash brown. I gave it to my mum who has mousy hair!

NeverEverSure86 · 06/09/2024 09:42

Last year I didn’t buy any AC but thanks to these threads was intrigued and wanted to try the dreaded AB Rich Cream. Got it on eBay from someone who was reselling some of the AC stuff they didn’t want. Thought that was brilliant.

I liked it too. Just not enough to pay full price to repurchase it😁

Moofart · 06/09/2024 09:55

Thank you everyone, that all makes sense. Yes buying a calendar to sell at an inflated price after it has sold out definitely isn't fair to others but I agree, selling the odd thing can help prevent waste or equally we can donate them to charity etc. I really wanted an m&s beauty box previously and managed to find someone selling a bundle of the exact pieces I'd have used out the box so that worked out well in that instance :)

Peridot1 · 06/09/2024 09:56

It wasn’t me @JudgeBurrito. But it is a good idea! I might actually do that and start to use up some of my perfumes stash. I’m not a big perfume wearer really - usually just when I’m going out.

I've had The Cream before, and I didn't mind that, but I don't really like The Rich Cream, which is the one that they always seem to give out. It sells well on eBay though! 😄

TreesinthePark · 06/09/2024 10:39

@moofart I had the Dr Sebaugh retinol serum in one of my 2022 advents and loved it. It's over £70 full price but I managed to find it on Vinted for about £20.

I think it's a win-win for both buyer and seller to re-sell items you don't want and won't use. I think it's unfair when people buy calendars just to sell it all but that's a separate issue.

That's a brilliant idea re opening 1 door a month for the fragrance calendar.

What's the name of this calendar anyone?

HauntedbyMagpies · 06/09/2024 10:52

What's the point of an advent calendar if you know exactly what's in it? I mean obviously you need to have a rough idea to make sure it has things you like but if you know precisely what's in it, what's the point?! Why not just sell it all as a bundle in a gift box?!? Going through the fakery of opening a drawer (should be a door but obviously can’t be if there's a block of cheese or bottle of shower gel in it! 🙄) every day is just so disingenuous daft, surely?!

JudgeBurrito · 06/09/2024 10:56

@HauntedbyMagpies If you research and buy now, there's a good chance you've forgotten the specifics by December (I speak from experience). Flannels gave up on the calendar and just produce a cracker but that takes away the fun for me. Which is the point - fun. Also tradition, the Christmas build up/countdown etc. Do you go about telling children not to get an advent calendar because it's just 25 chunks of chocolate and it would be better value for money just to buy a Dairy Milk..? Or not to buy an advent candle because they could just burn a normal candle? Let people enjoy things.

Growlybear83 · 06/09/2024 11:00

@HauntedbyMagpies I suppose that depends on what your memory is like. I looked at the contents lists for each of the calendars and then decided to use my beauty drop credit to buy the Liberty calendar. It arrived a couple of weeks ago, and I'm already struggling to remember what's in it. By December, I will have completely forgotten and it will be a lovely surprise each day 😆

Absolutely not! On the contrary! I buy my child a toy advent calendar and a chocolate one every year. She chooses the toy brand and I don't let her see the back so that she gets a surprise each day and more fun! 😆 Her face lights up when she gets that surprise each day and enjoys counting down to Christmas.

Last year a mum at school was showing us all her advent calendar (in October!) and opened it all up, got everything out and said "Ooh I can’t wait until the 11th when I get to use the hand cream!" 🤦‍♀️ I mean it's right there! You can use it now!

Lovethatforyouhun · 06/09/2024 11:05

I went to check out the Flannels cracker…
But typed in advent as Ive been scouring all the sites and got a jump scare! Wth is wrong with the online team at Mike Ashley towers?!

@HauntedbyMagpies Delayed gratification, it can mean you enjoy things more when you eventually get them. It's nice waking up on a cold December morning and having a treat waiting on you. Let's be honest, if you have the budget for a luxury advent calendar you're unlikely to be deprived of anything through the rest of the year.

This is true I suppose, if you buy it half way through the year.
To be fair, I've never bought an advent calendar for myself. Not for any reason other than I can’t use retail skincare or make up due to skin issues, don't drink coffee or flavoured teas & I'm a fussy eater! So there's not much left to choose from.
Might get myself a Lindt one this year although I could make post-Christmas more interesting and start it at the real beginning of Advent like they were traditionally for.

I keep rebuying the Charlotte Mensah pomade on Vinted. Love it.

IlovePond · 06/09/2024 12:01

I don’t use retinol products, (scared of them, for some reason!) so always attempt to sell on if I get one in an a/c. (I am a useless eBay seller, so anyone who buys from me always gets a bargain 😹)

When I used to buy LOADS of products, I gave lots of my beauty gwps and a/c stuff away to people at work. I look back now and wonder why I didn’t use at least some of it myself - I am still regretting parting with the BB eye shadow!

BTW: If anyone is doing a DIY calendar, LF has 22% off some items - app only - with code: FLASH22
