What's wrong with side strioe trousers?!

Isometimeswonder · 28/08/2024 21:15

Just seen on another thread that trousers with side stripes are no longer OK?!
Why?!
(Although I will still wear my Next ones, as they're new. And I like them!)
Nb... this is semi lightheaded, but still a real question.

Love the multiple suggestions that older people render clothes unstylish 😏

Quite. Ageism rampant as usual.

Agree.
I’m 60. I’ve been obsessed with clothes my whole life, I haven’t suddenly morphed into someone who couldn’t care less about clothing . I have a friend and a Mil who are both almost 30 years older than me and always look great. Friend looked fab in her Margaret Howell monkey boots last time I saw her. Gorgeous clothes aren’t exclusively for the under forties.

Agree, I think the most stylish people I know (not the only ones but the most stylish ones) are older people that have always loved clothes, have honed their style and also don’t give a shit what other people think. It’s a powerful combination.

No @PonyPatter44 I do not. Unless you're meaning Adidas or cheap knock off alternatives because that's what I see when you say trousers with a side stripe.

Well yes, that is what they look like, even if they aren't. They were very popular for a while on here. I don't like them.

jaimelesoleil · 29/08/2024 17:14

Not only 'old' but a MIL to boot 🙄😉

This has made me laugh - thank you!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 30/08/2024 08:17

I’ve never quite taken to them, although I’ve tried several pairs over the years, but there’s something about the stripe - I think it’s the the thicker stripe maybe? I do have a pair of wide legs with a very thin stripe, but I do see them very much as a sporty ‘trackie bottom’ style, a bit like the adidas wide leg pants, and wear them accordingly.

IWantedThereThereButItsGone · 30/08/2024 08:37

These are reasonably OK

No, those are vile! Grin

(Obviously others may think differently.)

I saw these earlier. I’m not personally looking for £40 polyester trousers right now, but if i saw someone wearing them I wouldn’t think anything negative - If I noticed them at all.

Zara side stripe

thekrakenhasgone · 30/08/2024 08:43

They're a bit too 'sportswear' for me - not good for work, for going out or for anything other than going to a running track (in my skewed view of the world). They look good on other people though- I was admiring those on Sporty Spice on Who do You Think You Are? last night. I think you need to be really slim to pull them off though

MrsStottlemeyer · 30/08/2024 09:23

Non Adidas side stripe trousers send me instantly back to being 14 and wanting Adidas tracksuit bottoms for PE but being forced to wear 2 stripe ones from the market 😭

Meadowfinch · 30/08/2024 09:26

Too military in style for me. Not a trend I will miss.

"If they're in M&S where (shudder) old people shop I shan't buy them as I'm in my mid thirties."

Confused
KirstenBlest · 30/08/2024 12:56

@IWantedThereThereButItsGone , I meant aren't bad as in OK for WFH or something. I wouldn't buy them.
The Zara ones are almost OK but look cheap and nasty.

@weareallqueens , I suspect that the M&S naysayers either don't ever venture near the place but slag it off because they went about 20 years ago towards the tail end of the sales, or they shop there regularly but pretend they don't.

Coffeekisses · 30/08/2024 14:00

Well personally I think it’s just a way to wear joggers (the only leg garment I’m comfortable in frankly) whilst making an effort (because side stripe!). Genius creation but someone always has to spoil it!

Isometimeswonder · 30/08/2024 16:00

I should explain maybe that the ones I like are linen ones, nit the tracksuity ones.
I have these, and also the same in black with taupe stripe.

I wear what I like. If i linked what I actually do wear when WFH, I'd probably be banned from S&B. Usually tatty tracky bottoms or leggings.

Apologies for oversharing. Blush

IWantedThereThereButItsGone · 30/08/2024 17:47

It was only with the advent of lockdowns that I discovered other people had whole wardrobes of leisure wear for their domestic lives. Before that I’d assumed everyone just wore their oldest, shabbiest clothes at home.

But I do prefer my out of the house clothes to look as if I have a vague idea of ‘what’s going on’.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 30/08/2024 19:09

I think it’s because when they first came out they looked really unique and cool, and now they are everywhere and not so cool anymore as a result. They don’t look terrible though.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/08/2024 19:17

I don't dislike them, but when people wear them to work I always think they look a bit too sports casual tbh.

SanMarzano · 30/08/2024 20:50

I have the M&S ones but I’ve always been confused at the suggestion that they are smart/a smarter option. They look like jogging bottoms regardless of the actual fabric and if anything the stripe usually makes them look less smart imo. I bought mine for wearing on a long flight because they’re comfy and quite warm rather than for style.

Tinymrscollings · 31/08/2024 00:05

I’m really pleased that people seem to have had enough of brands, influencers and the people who believe them trying to keep the wheels turning by constantly declaring things to be the only thing worth wearing and other things they were recommending a few weeks ago to be tragically out of style. I’m not sure if I’ve got older or the world has moved on but what once felt exciting and interesting now feels a bit grubby and sad.

I’m really into clothes and like to know what’s new and interesting but am done with the 6 week trend cycle.

If you like the side stripes then wear them, OP. I like them too, but I find them really hard to make an outfit with. I have a pair of the M and S ones, from the first year when they were lovely quality and I can’t seem to make them work for me. They look wrong with everything I put with them. Sporty yet smart is advanced syllabus style, I can’t do it. That’s why I think they might be ‘over’ rather than looking laughably outdated. Way too easy to get them wrong, and when they’re wrong they’re really wrong. One of my most hated looks is a waterproof walking coat and a slightly formal leather bag and every outfit I put together with the side stripes feels dangerously close to my dreaded Karrimor-Radley territory.

Grabyourpassportandmyhand · 29/08/2024 00:58

They aren't from a couple of years ago though. I have a pair of old TopShop ones (sadly no longer fit) that are at least ten years old.

Re being dated. IMO they were different. Thirty something year old me thought they looked quite cool at the time.

Roll on nine years and similar trousers are in sale in M&S where over 50% of their consumers are age over fifty. Thirty something year old me would never have shopped in M&S so the once cool trousers are seen as something that older people wear and think they look cool. They have been ruined simply by being worn by older people. FWIW almost fifty year old me likes trousers with a side stripe although I don't think they still look cool.

I also have an ancient pair of topshop ones! Black with a blue and cream side stripe. Sadly they are too big for me now

Tinymrscollings · 31/08/2024 00:10

I have a pair of Me + Em side stripe trousers that I do wear a lot, These ones are tapered leg and the stripe detail is black on the black trousers. Nod to the tracksuit vibe but so much easier to style without the actual stripe of white and colour- I’ve worn them so much.

KirstenBlest · 31/08/2024 00:21

I'm getting ads for side stripe trousers.

Tinymrscollings · 31/08/2024 00:29

KirstenBlest · 30/08/2024 08:26

I've got a pair of denim shorts with a side stripe, and I think they are fine, because it's a casual garment.

These are reasonably OK, but it's still a bit like wearing trackies.

Some stylists were really phoning it in on side stripe trouser photo shoot day weren’t they? The George outfit is awful too
