What's wrong with side strioe trousers?!

Isometimeswonder · 28/08/2024 21:15

Just seen on another thread that trousers with side stripes are no longer OK?!
Why?!
(Although I will still wear my Next ones, as they're new. And I like them!)
Nb... this is semi lightheaded, but still a real question.

If you like them wear them, yes they are not the height of fashion but so what? I think the only time things that I wear are very fashionable is by default when something I have had for some time comes back in.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 29/08/2024 07:40

I’ve got a pair and people always say how much they like them when I wear them. I think they’re quite flattering for my body shape.

LivesinLondon2000 · 29/08/2024 08:04

I like them too. The only reason I haven’t bought any is because the colour of the stripe is a bit of a statement and just limits what you can wear on top. I prefer wearing similarly cut wide trousers in plain colours.

GoTigers · 29/08/2024 08:11

I’ve had a pair from Other Stories for about 8 years so I wouldn’t call them ‘fashionable’. Couldn’t tell you the last time I wore them. Over 2 years ago maybe.

As others have said, they’re an M&S ‘staple’ these days.

Love the multiple suggestions that older people render clothes unstylish 😏

Ha yes! although to be fair, I think those posts - and the thread in question - are talking more about what's in fashion as opposed to what looks stylish. (If there's one thing I know from this board it's that they're not the same Wink)
Anyway don't blame all older people, I've never worn them, maybe because my antennae for sorting the short lived trends from the long term have got sharper with age. Yes, I am fickle and flighty enough to care about this but I also know it's very, very wrong to care, so I decided side stripes would be short term and gave them a swerve. In fact they've been around a lot longer than I expected, maybe because the pandemic kept athleisure going.

If it helps, I keep an eye on Me and Em, (although I rarely buy) because they're pretty grown up but also, I think, have a good eye for what is and isn't contemporary and they still have a few side stripers.

Love these from Baujken

Snoopsnoggysnog · 29/08/2024 08:52

Why won’t the site let me post an image? The page keeps refreshing

NewNameNoelle · 29/08/2024 08:54

There is absolutely nothing ‘wrong’ with side stripe trousers. Many people wear them and look good in them.

They aren’t what the fashion bloggers are wearing but does that matter? Back in the real world people wear what they like rather than what people they don’t know tell them they should wear.

If you like them, wear them and enjoy them.

Cherrysoup · 29/08/2024 08:54

I had a couple of pairs about 10 years ago, jersey, wide, I gave them to charity when I dropped sizes. Not sure I’d get more, they strike me as for doing sports.

Imalongtimepostingmum · 29/08/2024 09:05

I adored my M&S side stripes but the quality declined quickly when they realised they were onto a trend, I'm ditching them this year.

I've bought three pairs of the back tab fastening wide legs which are much smarter and I love wearing sized up.

Could you post a link to these please @Imalongtimepostingmum ?

DefinitelyMaybe24 · 29/08/2024 09:11

I love mine and didn’t know they were ‘out.’ I’ll wear them as they are comfortable and easy to put on without thinking.

I have some but never wore them. I liked them but when I look at them, they're a bit 'for women who want their short legs to seem longer'.
That wasn't why I bought them. Mine are jeans, but this is what I'd think of
Side Stripe Wide Leg Trousers | M&S Collection | M&S (marksandspencer.com)
Black Side Stripe Satin Wide Leg Trousers | New Look

SatinHeart · 29/08/2024 09:17

They've never really been a thing round my way tbh. Only ever seen one or two people wearing them in RL.

It shows my age, but they just remind me of being a teenager when we were all wearing Adidas trousers!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/08/2024 09:18

They're one of the styles that I actually agreed with management (a rare occasion) weren't smart enough for dress code - they reminded me of tracksuits more than they ever evoked cavalry officers about to charge into history usually at the expense of the local population.

mondaytosunday · 29/08/2024 09:20

Who says if 'they are no longer ok'? It may be a trend but looking online where I buy things they are still sold. Anyway who cares? I don't change my wardrobe because this or that is in or out.
Doesn't anything pretty much go these days? My DD is into 70s clothing (think Ali MacGraw in Love Story. The hair, the beret, knee high boots and plaid mini skirts. She looks amazing.

GenAvocadoOnToast · 29/08/2024 09:22

I had a nice wool pair from Gap in the early 00s. They had a single thin stripe down the side. More than a single line makes them look like those Nike/Adidas/whatever tracksuit bottoms IMO.

Cantonet · 29/08/2024 09:35

I find them easy to wear & stylish.
However I'm 60 & my 2 dd's in their 20''s wouldn't be seen dead in them.
Plus they're very practical attire on cold winter days, as I have a couple of pairs of the heavy weight M&S ones. Worn with a navy or black cashmere jumper & a navy or black wool coat they look perfectly smart. They're certainly better looking than skinnies or cigarette pants.
And yes if Me & Em are still selling them that's a point in their favour.

TheOGCCL · 29/08/2024 09:40

I think they have a military vibe I’m not sure about. Also the colours always seem quite ‘winter’, harsh contrasts like black/white and black/red which don’t go with my ‘autumn’ clothes.

maybe that's what I don't like about them, the military look or it's a sporty look so more casual than casual, so not for me, not seen many about tbh, none of my friends have worn them, we're all in our 60s

IWantedThereThereButItsGone · 29/08/2024 10:18

I may have been vaguely in the vicinity of the poster who said burn them on the other thread.

I’ve never seen the apparently famous Marks and S version in the wild, but I had some side stripe jeans from Acne Studios nearly a decade ago. Gorgeous for several years but I’m not going to wear them now. (Even though still pristine.) The style feels severely dated to me. I’m over 60 btw.

But seriously, how very dare people interested in mere fashion invade S&B and pollute it with their pointless opinions?Grin

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/08/2024 10:26

It was an odd and very recognisable look that came into fashion, was taken up strongly for a year or two, and then like all trends, is on the way out. Wear it if you like it, I say.
