What colour fascinator, shoes & bag with this dress?

Am going to a wedding in a few weeks and have just bought this dress. It's a very dark teal. Not sure what colour to put with it? I'm early 50s and grey haired. Was thinking maybe gold shoes and bag and a gold/teal fascinator? Any thoughts would be great!

This is the 2nd thread in a week saying fascinators are old hat/dated

Which is a bugger as I'm MOG in a few weeks and wearing one! I'm wearing a red wide legged jumpsuit and look ridiculous in an alice band type thing and couldn't find a hat that looked right with the shape of the outfit!

Your outfit sounds fabulous. Honestly, if one person states something on mumsnet, you'll hear it repeated as "fact" 100 times. If some people think they're dated, that's fine. I don't. Nobody is right or wrong.

Those Amazon fascinators are absolutely gopping. No-one wears horrors like that.

Gopping. Haven't heard that for ages. Proper made me laugh

TizerorFizz · 11/08/2024 07:15

Camilla started the fascinator trend when she married Charles. That’s a while ago. Most hats on a headband go with any outfit. I like them as they are easy to wear and look stylish. Lots of women wearing Alice bands don’t look great but some do. I’d always advise looking at Hostie Hats for a great range. I very much like a decent hat attached to a head band but not a flimsy fascinator with no structure that has no discernible crown and a few whisps of feathers and not much more.

AuntieMarys · 11/08/2024 07:19

I look a twat in a hat and in fact any head gear. I hate dressing up and avoid weddings for that reason.
I like the red jumpsuit idea whoever posted earlier. I will be MOG in about 5 years and a jumpsuit sounds promising. Can't do dresses.

Oblomov24 · 11/08/2024 07:30

Oh thank you @TizerorFizz, I didn't know that about the hatinators. Agree that Charlotte Hawkins taste is impeccable. That dress, the colour! Plus all the fashion of Royal Ascot 24 was so beautiful.

Cyclingmummy1 · 11/08/2024 07:36

I thought bright pink, but it would be better to try a few on as you may be surprised.

The hairband look isn't a good one for me.

Holidayhell22 · 11/08/2024 07:39

My first thought was bright pink.
I saw this combo recently and it looked great.
People still wear fascinators at weddings. Hats too.
I think the thick Alice type headbands can look odd on older women. It’s a fine balance as they can look a bit Alice in wonderland.
The dress is lovely op.

Worthalltheyears · 11/08/2024 07:41

Google the colour wheel. The colour directly opposite your dress colour is the clashing shade and the colours on either side are the complementary shades.
should help to give you some ideas.

mellongoose · 11/08/2024 07:41

I like PP's dark green idea. Etsy has some good ones.

I love that feather headband.

Definite no to fascinators. Headbands seem to be ubiquitous now. I think go full circle and back to pre-fascinator times and go for a proper hat. They can really flatter your face if you get the right one. And that dress is plain so you could go for something interesting. I like how it's styled in the photo with the gold accessories though too.

OldTinHat · 11/08/2024 08:01

Just here to say I love, love that dress OP!

yikesanotherbooboo · 11/08/2024 08:39

If the wedding is formal and traditional a hatinator will work well.
If it is more city fashionable or more country informal there is no need for headgear unless you particularly want to wear it in which case choose something you like. I completely agree that those Charlotte Hawkins suggestions look great. There are lots of hat places around , often run from home offices where the owner has hundreds of hats and head wear in all colours to hire. It is the end of the season now so they will be well stocked and you can try on with your dress.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 10/08/2024 19:24

It’s a really lovely dress. I agree gold or silver accessories (to match what jewellery you prefer). I also think pink (bright or blush) would look good. As would orange if it suits you. I tend to agree that fascinators have had their day. But I am sure some people will wear them. I’d probably go a bit more upscale that the Amazon one as the dress is so elegant you don’t want to cheapen the look of it. I’m similar age to you. Probably would not go for a head band myself. If you want a head piece maybe a pillbox hat?

I really love pill box hats! So chic and classic, but unlikely anyone else there will be wearing one

skibiditoilet · 11/08/2024 09:19

I’d go acid yellow accessories with this lovely blue.

birdsoeking · 11/08/2024 09:26

ActualChips · 10/08/2024 17:15

I laughed when the link opened 😄

Awww do you feel better for posting that. Why can’t you just scroll past, ignore and be a nice person?

TizerorFizz · 11/08/2024 09:31

@skibiditoilet Why so bright? It’s not really a great idea to be so opposite the base colour. I rarely see this now when looking at the very fashionable and stylish.

@Oblomov24 I do not think anyone can go far wrong by copying Charlotte Hawkins for a formal event. If anyone else is interested, just google Charlotte Hawkins Royal Ascot and stylish summer formal dressing is there ready to copy.

I like the feather headband. I also think full hats are not so common as they were. The hatinators on an Alice band can give width and height without making you very hot! Also no hat hair. Keeps you looking much fresher. Pill boxes can be difficult to secure but they look great.

Fingeronthebutton · 11/08/2024 10:06

Babycatsarenice · 10/08/2024 19:44

It's a really nice dress I would pair cream with it

Absolutely! And not too much matching Aging.

Frasers · 11/08/2024 10:20

The dress is lovely and Metallics will work well with it. I’m afraid I second the objections to a fascinator. They always look ridiculous , something plonked on your head and no one in real life makes them look good.

DeclansAFeckingDream · 11/08/2024 12:00

LoneHydrangea · 10/08/2024 19:07

Ffs. Saying fascinators are hideous and dated is not being nasty. The joy, and value, of S&B threads is that people are honest. If you bought your Amazon fascinator and tried it on to show your friends, they’d all be polite but certainly untruthful.

Asking for opinions from strangers that don’t know you means you get honest opinions. If you think that’s nasty, it really isn’t.

There's a way of saying something, without laughing at someone's choice. Most people can be honest and not be rude, it's not hard.

FunIsland · 11/08/2024 12:12

The dress is lovely, and I’d agree with contrasting with bright pink. Personally I think the hair bands are awful and remind me of the dorky / overly religious / stuck up girls you see in films. I don’t know what length or style your hair is but a low twist / bun with a flower / bow etc might look nice, or if you have curly shortish bob you could pin up one side in a jewellery hair slide or clip?

(I wore something like that for DSS wedding and got lots of compliments)

TizerorFizz · 11/08/2024 12:17

@FunIsland Not sure where you are getting you fashion references from. Obviously no one fashionable. A bow? A flower? Yikes.

No one will be rude about clothes at a wedding. As if anyone would be anything but pleasant to the DM of the groom. However are they fashionable people? Matching colours are 100% 2024. Shocking colour contrasts are simply not.

StellaCruella · 11/08/2024 12:25

No one wears fascinators any more.

Gold, cream, nude and magenta would all go well for shoes and bag.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/08/2024 12:28

NonsuchCastle · 10/08/2024 19:10

People DO wear fascinators like that now. Plus, you should wear what you like - never mind what other people wear. I had a look at M&S fascinators, which are aimed at your age-group. Lots of nice things there.

Well if it were me you'd have lost me with your "aimed at your age group" comment.

I think the Amazon/ M& S type fascinators aren't stylish- no matter what "age group" you're in

Fascinators which are more dramatic and are more like pill box hats or saucer hats, yes, or headbands , yes.

Gold, or quite a bold dark pink. Don't wear a fascinator though, they're not on trend and usually look pretty daft. You could wear a nice hair clip or something like that, or quite large earrings?
