New thread. Woke (blooming cat) to find it’s nearly full.

I was hoping I could use the polyamide content as a reason to forget about the cardigan but now I’m back to wanting it 😊. I too longed for a mohair jumper when I was a teenager @OftenOrange My mum said she knew someone who could make one for me and I chose a pattern, however the lady knitted it on a machine and it came out tiny! I wanted the long and loose look but I could barely get it on. Silly me had had visions of looking cool..

I was like this with an aran cardigan!
My Aunt was to knit me one thinking oversized long and baggy but nope! Short and tight and frumpy. Even my mum agreed and that's something!
I was bitterly dissapointed.
As for mohair, I love it but it's itchy on me, sadly.

ScottishMouse · 19/10/2024 13:10

Oh maybe the itch of mohair will save me from that cardigan @neveradullmoment99. I am quite sensitive to itchy wool.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/10/2024 17:10

I would really struggle with it.
As for Toast, I am really struggling with this collection. I am finding very little that I like. I did order the Isobel Harvey skirt, which I love. I kept two things from the sale too. The bryn in the gorgeous green pattern. This time I got a 14 and it is much nicer. I also kept the button through pinafore dress although debated over the very a-line shape of it. I have worn it and felt good in it. It was a bit stiff to begin with but I am hoping it will soften.
As for the new things - I like the dot dress but I am not a fan of long sleeves. I much prefer the just above the wrist. I just get too hot and find full length sleeves restricting.

OftenOrange · 19/10/2024 18:11

I had a good look at the new collection in my local store.
The mohair cardigan is indeed a lovely thing , the gold colour is more of a mid brown to me but still terrific , and looks it great with the navy boat neck t which it was hung with. Super useful item IMO …sorry to be enabling !
There were a couple of dresses in a shiny silky fabric which looked like they’d come from a jumble sale due to terrible creasing . One dress was very odd with a high yoke like a nightie.
I loved the cord shirt in a lightish gold , and fell for a big woolly scarf in earthy tones with orange andpurple , it’s the one for £130 .
It looked best with the blue Sale jacket I was wearing which is odd , in fact the golds and browns didn’t look quite so fab with it . I have a tendency to match which doesn’t feel current at all, I love discovering unexpected colour combos .

OftenOrange · 19/10/2024 18:18

Just bought the Baya cord shirt as almost sold out and of course couldn’t resist that gorgeous colour block scarf…

JJkate · 19/10/2024 18:38

@OftenOrange did you try the cardigan on? I tried them both today and was absolutely covered in stray mohair after. No sure if this is normal?

Nothungrycat · 19/10/2024 19:55

I'm still reeling. I went to the Shepton Mallet store today, to see what was in the reduced price section, and there was a very nice heavy cotton jacket in indigo. Made in the UK. And I was quite tempted, because it was lovely, but it was reduced to £225 from £325. And £225 still seems a lot....

IlovePond · 19/10/2024 19:56

Hi, I went to York Toast today - the staff were lovely.

I tried on the brick Freya dress - it was too big for me in a M but S would have been too small. It just didn’t suit me and I looked like a sack of potatoes. Such a shame, as I have seen other people wearing it and it looked nice on them.

I tried on the orange/black dogtooth coat in M. It looked great from the front, but from the side I looked like a giant orange triangle, (not the look I was going for!) Tbh, if it wasn’t £495, I would have hunted down DH, (who was outside with DDog), for his opinion, because I still really liked it. As it was, I left it.

I also tried on the green Uruguayan jumper. Sadly, given that it’s £395, I really liked this. Ideally it would be a bit longer, (because even though it’s a little longer than the rest of Toast’s current jumpers, it’s still quite short). I told myself that it had to stay in the shop to keep the orange coat company. At that price, it would have to be perfect, even if I was in the market for spending that much money, (which I am not!)

I had a quick look at the homeware and the Xmas decorations but I really mustn’t buy any more.

I also tried on the snood in blue. I liked this, but it was quite big, (and I think I had one in pale pink - hand knitted - when I was a baby! One for the sale - maybe.

Whilst I was at it, I had another attempt at wearing the woolly bandana thing. I just looked like I was throttling myself 🙀 I am not a woolly bandana wearing person, apparently.

I enjoyed my visit, however. The results of my personal, totally unofficial ‘Toast shop’ poll are in: As of October 2024, imo, the York staff are the friendliest!

IlovePond · 19/10/2024 20:04

@Nothungrycat - I feel your pain! Since they got rid of the sample rails at SM, (except during special sample weekends, when they have tons of stuff), it can be hard to find bargains. Weirdly, it’s also not unknown for stuff to be more expensive than it was in a previous sale!

You can still find some bargains, but not as often or as cheaply!

On a related note: Does anyone know if SM are doing another sample sale any time soon, (or have I just missed one🙀)?

Stoic123 · 19/10/2024 20:14

@IlovePond - glad you had an enjoyable York shop visit. Nearly popped in there today (to try on the navy snood!) but ran out of time so ordered the snood online instead- along with arm warmers.

That coat was in the window when I walked past the shop midweek and it did look lovely.

IlovePond · 19/10/2024 21:13

I am glad I tried the coat on @Stoic123 - it would have been a cool coincidence if we’d been there at the same time!

mizu · 19/10/2024 21:50

@IlovePond laughing at the woolly bandana try on.

I usually get an instagram post if there is an upcoming SM sample sale and there hasn't been one since end of May I don't think.

I'm going to a Circle event on Thursday and hoping to pick up something nice.

Got this indigo denim wrap dress on Vinted last week. Can't remember what season it was but it's really very lovely.

Toasties can we go on chatting forever? Looks like it!
IlovePond · 20/10/2024 08:21

Thanks @mizu - I am not on instagram so never know if the sales are happening, (the only reason I knew last time was someone at SM told me a couple of weeks earlier!)

That is a nice dress!

triggers34 · 20/10/2024 09:53

My dresses arrived the graphic cashmere one is a keeper . I'm not sure about the Freya , I'll try and style it today and make a decision.

Does anyone have the Blundstone clogs ? I love the look of them but will wait for the sale .

@IlovePond I wish I'd tried on the coat my Dh and dog were in the pub opposite . My first trip to York what a lovely town !

IlovePond · 20/10/2024 10:20

Were you there yesterday too @triggers34? Small world, if so! My DH was standing across the street with DDog!

I used to go to York a lot when I lived in Leeds. Was trying to remember yesterday the last time I went. It was with younger DS and was probably getting on for 12-15years ago 🙀🙀🙀

triggers34 · 20/10/2024 10:46

@IlovePond No it was a few weeks ago,dh's parents live near Edinburgh so we usually try and break up the journey en route to see them . D dog was a pain so I didn't get nearly as long as I'd like to mooch .

IlovePond · 20/10/2024 11:35

I see @triggers34 - yes, I was desperate for a cup of tea yesterday pm but we couldn’t find anywhere that would take the dog that had space🙀

ScottishMouse · 20/10/2024 11:38

I tried the mohair cardigan yesterday, and can confirm that it is far too itchy for me. Phew. I felt it was a bit thin too for that price. I looked at the new herringbone items - they had the trousers and jumpsuit but not the shirt, but the fabric looked like it would look old and shabby very quickly. They were also both covered in bit of fluff and hairs from items that hung beside them so I figured I would be constantly picking things off them, and that is enough to put me off. This season has been a bit of a washout for me at Toast.

OrangeyLemon · 20/10/2024 14:55

There are lots of cafes in York but they do tend to be small! North South on Bootham near the Art Gallery is dog friendly and you can usually get a seat, maybe because it’s just outside the walls 🐾

IlovePond · 20/10/2024 15:26

Thanks @OrangeyLemon - will check it out if we go back. We went to Drift In in the morning, but there were queues outside when we came back late afternoon 🙀

My tour of Northern Toast continues: On my way to the Harrogate store!

Countmeout · 21/10/2024 16:44

You could write a guide to Toast stores @IlovePond . Look forward to hearing about your experience today.

😹@Countmeout - I went to Harrogate today - the staff were very friendly. Ddog was a hit. It’s a really nice shop.

The store is quite big, (there’s a separate men’s/homeware shop next door), and they had some lovely coats and jumpers in stock.

I tried the orange and black coat on again. This time I decided M was too big - the sleeves were really long. No S in stock. I tried the XS, (obviously too small😹), but sleeve length was better.

I might order a S online to try, but for £495 it would have to be perfect and the best coat ever in the whole wide world and last me for the foreseeable! Not sure if it meets all three criteria!

I contemplated buying the wooden print blocks, but they didn’t have the dove version in stock. Lots of lovely baubles there, though.

Unfortunately, I had another go with the woolly bandana and somehow ended up buying the orange version. Equally unfortunately, DH waited until we were outside before telling me how ghastly it was and enquiring as to what I was thinking in bringing it home🙀

I took myself off to Betty’s on the corner to ponder my purchase. I will try it on tomorrow and see how it feels/looks in the cold light of day!

ScottishMouse · 21/10/2024 21:02

@IlovePond i love the wooly bandana! I bought the tawny version as it is most useful for me. I was tempted by the orange one, but I have two orange jumpers and it wasn’t the right colour for either so that would limit its use for me. But I could be tempted by it in a sale.
When I tried it first a few months ago, I didn’t like it at all, but that was because I tied it in a double knot at the front. Then I saw it styled on Instagram with just a single knot, and one end nonchalantly thrown up towards one shoulder. I tried this, and it was much better. That’s how I wear it now.
Maybe it is worth experimenting with different ways of tying it?
