What are the cruellest fashions of recent decades?

What are the fashions which are most cruel to the people wearing them? Either due to impracticalily, discomfort or embarrassment?

I was wondering about this in the park on the weekend. There was a lady wearing a short flippy skirt. When she was standing up, it looked an ok length and she looked nice (it would never suit me!).

But she had a kid with her and was bending over to pick things off the grass. When she did this, when sitting on the grass, you could see all of her knickers and bum. There were other families with her who would also have been able to see everything.

Is this not embarrassing for her? Does she not mind? Or does she not realise?

If the latter, then this is a cruel fashion and very impractical. You need to be able to bend down.

Another cruel fashion for me is tight pencil skirts with a slit up the back, because the skirt rides up 😮

Very short fringes. Oh my life.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/08/2024 01:31

Those scrunchie butt legging atrocities or whatever they are called. Horrendous.

ouch321 · 01/08/2024 01:36

I'm very hmmm about the current male fashion to wear their trousers/jeans/joggers underneath their arse so we can all see their boxers.
The other day on the bus a young man got up and rang the bell and went and waited in front of the exit door for the bus to stop. I was standing in the wheelchair area so he was dead in front of me. He was dressed in a tee and trackies and looked perfectly respectable but as the bus pulls up, before he disembarks, he literally pulled his tracksuit down at the back to ensure his underwear was showing and stepped off. Was so funny to see.

The stuff people are having pumped into their faces. Especially by under qualified and unregulated people. A lot of them start off pretty but the result, especially as they go for more and more is like looking at deformity.
Occasionally looks actively painful, but it's wide spread and in demand.
What really irks me though is the judgement I receive from them. I'm heavily pierced, tattooed and dress alternatively. I have never outwardly said a word or physically made any motion or facial reaction to judge anyone (school mums and many people where I live), I just hope they're not actually in pain and wish they could've realised how lovely they looked before. But they don’t stop for a second at judging me. Open sniggers, elbowing others, out loud comments. I can't react without them escalating the situation. I don’t wish ill on anyone but I wish they'd have a bit of a think and compare our situations.
So many people are batshit and brazen now. I see it as a reflection on them rather than me.

Ra ra skirts are back in

Remember those Grin

Droolylabradors · 01/08/2024 06:31

Cold shoulder tops. I've never seen a more unflattering garment.

Always worn to look glamorous, but looks like (imo) the frumpiest item ever. I've never seen a woman look good in one. Yet the same women could look lovely in other clothes.

Thatsnotmynose · 01/08/2024 06:36

Shorts that are just actually pants. I know we should all be body positive but to have someone's cellulite actively in your face as you stand on the escalators is a little off-putting.

Bjorkdidit · 01/08/2024 06:48

Pretty much everything at the moment and the way it is all presented on social media. People are going to look back in horror and think 'what on earth were they thinking' about all the extreme eyebrows and eyelashes, make up, pouting, seeming inability to stand up straight and weird mirror/phone poses. The worst is when someone has died following a tragic event and they've used one of their social media photos of them. Awful.

And all the fillers/botox, extreme teeth whitening, fake tanning and waxing. Some people must be spending an enormous amount of time and money keeping up with it all.

Plus the extremely revealing leggings and hot pants that most young women are currently wearing. Although there also seems to be an odd fashion for people to wear very thick coats in hot weather. Aren't these people so uncomfortably hot?

Sethera · 01/08/2024 06:53

Enormous tattoos - where people get their whole leg or arm covered. It's a cruel fashion because they will be stuck with it when the fashion changes, and there's no hiding it as there might be with a smaller tattoo.

Sussurations · 01/08/2024 06:57

I suspect that some young women wearing shorts have no idea what they really look like from behind, as I often see them wearing ones that are a bit too revealing.

Whoever convinced people that shapeless 3/4 length linen or combat trousers with trainers was a good look has a lot to answer for.

newpussmum · 01/08/2024 07:00

Definitely the thick black eyebrows (and false lashes)

Eyebrows can really enhance your features, but not if they dominate your whole face!

It's probably because they are so often made of horrible cheap material. And the fabric is normally heavily patterned which make them every more dreadful.

ichundich · 01/08/2024 07:02

Thongs
Tattoos
Super high-waisted trousers
Arse leggings
Cropped winter coats

Machiavellian · 01/08/2024 07:04

Tight leggings that are designed to hug and accentuate front and back curves. Eg bottom and vulva. It's just so..... Unnecessary.

LifeofBrienne · 01/08/2024 07:05

At least high heels have gone out of fashion. Whenever I see a woman wearing them nowadays it makes me do a double take, and then I feel happy that they are so rare now.

Sandyankles · 01/08/2024 07:26

Lipfillers - so ugly and ridiculous.

Drag queen style make up on lovely young women (most young people are naturally lovely, it’s heart breaking that they don’t realise it). The drag queen look is so ageing and hideous, look a horrible mask,

Tattoos - apologies to those who have them but I find them repulsive and a form of self harming. A small tattoo on the arm of a member of the armed forces or something tiny on an ankle is just about ok.

Cold shoulder tops, so unflattering, they make normal shoulders look rounded.

Anything that physically hampers women’s ability to move high heels etc.

Those ridiculous carrot shaped trousers on men esp when worn with no socks.

Men in loafers without socks.

Men not wearing tops when shopping/in town.

JamSandle · 01/08/2024 07:29

High heels (absolutely awful for your feet.

StormingNorman · 01/08/2024 07:37

The Bianca Censori-inspired trend for booty shorts and cropped vests, often nude 🙄

unsync · 01/08/2024 07:40

Arse bikinis. No one needs to see that. Ditto to wedgie leggings. As pp said, young men need to pull their trousers up, I don't want to see their arses either.

Lilysgoneshopping · 01/08/2024 07:51

Anyone who doesn't realise an extreme mini skirt will show yoir breakfast when you bend over probably shouldn't be let out alone.
Nobody over the age of about 18 and weighing more than about 7 stone should go anywhere near a ra-ra skirt

Sandyankles · 01/08/2024 07:56

I have seen some girls recently in strange little tight-fitting babygros, with very short legs and straps or short sleeves. They are flesh coloured and look like some kind of very restrictive underwear and the person forgot to get dressed.

Surf2Live · 01/08/2024 07:59

Underwire bras. I swear, that wire has a mind of its own and finds a way to stab you in the ribs in the most public settings.

Stilletos. Can't run in them, can barely walk, feet deforming monstrosities. Such a shame I really like wearing them very occasionally, can't figure out why but they make me feel some kinda way.

Young men with their pants below their bums so you can see their horrible underwear. Do they not realise this trend came from prisons and what it means there? So ick

Yoga pants / shorts on the high street. Too much on display in an inappropriate setting. Even if she has the body to pull it off it's just tacky. Just my opinion though.

BornLippy88 · 01/08/2024 08:03

Ultra low rise jeans. My "abs" need the coverage of mid rise!

It's true heels look very dated now, along with very thin-soled ballet pumps. I don't know how I used to wear both all the time.

Lot of these round our way and I have to do a double take to make sure the young woman even has clothes on.

StarlightLady · 01/08/2024 08:16

For me it’s high waisted trousers that come up to your bra. And visible, greying once white bra straps, where the bra should have long ago been confined to the bin. Plus the clear plastic bra straps that twinkle in the sun. Invisible? Huh!
