What are the cruellest fashions of recent decades?

What are the fashions which are most cruel to the people wearing them? Either due to impracticalily, discomfort or embarrassment?

I was wondering about this in the park on the weekend. There was a lady wearing a short flippy skirt. When she was standing up, it looked an ok length and she looked nice (it would never suit me!).

But she had a kid with her and was bending over to pick things off the grass. When she did this, when sitting on the grass, you could see all of her knickers and bum. There were other families with her who would also have been able to see everything.

Is this not embarrassing for her? Does she not mind? Or does she not realise?

If the latter, then this is a cruel fashion and very impractical. You need to be able to bend down.

Another cruel fashion for me is tight pencil skirts with a slit up the back, because the skirt rides up 😮

Don't play coy, you know exactly what Cupcakes means 🙄

Comes across to me as misogynistic filth. How about you?

Breadcat24 · 01/08/2024 13:38

Those "Body" things that sliced you in half from underneath and had stupid press studs

Rantypanties · 01/08/2024 13:43

Cold shoulder tops didn’t suit anyone of any class/wealth/shape!

the sliders and mid calf sports socks trend really needs to die quickly!

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 01/08/2024 13:45

Going back a few years, but the year it was all the rage for girls to decorate their hair with tiny bejewelled springs. The bastard things always got tangled and pulled the hair out when I removed them.

Werweisswohin · 01/08/2024 13:47

Anything that supports slave labour/bad conditions and/or fast fashion.
Anything that tries to stop humans from ageing normally - botox, fillers, surgery.
Excessive levels of make up.

What do the low-hanging trousers mean in prison?

Low hanging trousers were an advert to other male prisoners that the wearer would be willing to participate in anal sex ( even if they were not gay ) in exchange for cigs / phone cards / protection/ pretty much anything that is hard to get hold of in prison .

Opps posted to soon ,

Or at least it was the case 20 ish yrs ago .

Fully agree with this. Nothing worse than an old, wrinkly tattoo.

My 81 year old mum has just had her 4th tattoo. She got her first at the grand old age of 78.

She rocks them!

Each to their own

I think lip fillers and other injectables are the worst.

There is an absolutely stunning mum at the school gates who honestly looks like a model (or used to) and I saw her the other week for the first time in months and she has absolutely ruined her beautiful face with massive lip fillers. They mostly make women look older to me as well.

Izzynohopanda · 01/08/2024 15:35

Men wearing grey hoodies and joggers.

People going out in pyjamas and dressing gowns to supermarket - not sure this can be called a ‘cruel’ fashion, but its not an acceptable one.

I wonder if we have a child at the same school. There is an older mum who has had another child with a big age gap. She is clearly worried about being an older mum, bless her, but she's ruined her face to make sure she keeps up with the 20 something's. Her eyes are almost sealed shut and she has to make up for not making facial expressions by having a sing songy voice to convey emotion. It's all very odd and quite upsetting actually.

CheerfulBunny · 01/08/2024 15:46

Waist 'trainers' a la Kim Kardashian seem to have mercifully died a death. Competitive tiny waists were a thing a few years ago. The squishing of internal organs makes me feel a bit sick.
I see a lot of women in punishingly uncomfortable shoes at race days etc. They're generally carrying them later. Those plasticy see thru ones are horrible imo but hey, that's just my opinion. Suffering in uncomfortable shoes is a tale as old as time though - I've been seriously guilty of that over the years 🙄I can't face hobbling around in them all day anymore.

No no, the mum I’m talking about isn’t even “older” - probably mid-late 30s with kids in reception and year 2. She is Swedish, tall, blonde, slim and honestly naturally stunning but has completely ruined her face with lip
fillers.

StormingNorman · 01/08/2024 07:37

The Bianca Censori-inspired trend for booty shorts and cropped vests, often nude 🙄

DD was talking about this as the wearer needs to regularly tug it into position.

Ultra mini skirts, it looks like they've lost the clothing off their lower body.

LlynTegid · 01/08/2024 21:39

It would be easier to list the decent fashions.

I'm convinced half or more of the fashions you see are someone playing a practical joke.

Luluco · 01/08/2024 22:03

Dungarees, Birkenstocks and nude coloured clothes

Domoda · 01/08/2024 22:56

Malahide · 01/08/2024 09:23

Nope - unfortunately not!

What does that garment look like? I'm struggling to imagine. Can you link to one?

These are the most popular according to DD! Basically adult babygros! 🤢

Lifelover16 · 01/08/2024 23:16

Thong knickers (thrush magnets)
Massive holes pierced in earlobes
nose rings
wedgie scrunch bum leggings
huge lip fillers and dark lipliner

TheaBrandt · 01/08/2024 23:24

I actually think the ra ra skirts look great. They were all wearing them in Spain and most looked good

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 01/08/2024 23:33

Ring through the nose. My grandfather ringed his bull and his boar, it was so you could get a pole through it if they escaped ( prone to attacking people, especially the boar, his name was Satan, though he was a good sire) and get them away from people and less ferocious animals.

I can’t help thinking of this every time I see someone with a central ring through their nose, dangling over their lip ( nose studs are okay if that’s your thing).

Lolatusernamesuggestions · 01/08/2024 23:33

I actually like tattoos especially colourful ones. I've never had one because I'm a wuss. I think sleeves look good.
Fillers for lips - never liked them.
False lashes - remind me of my dolls from childhood, creepy as fuck.
I think 3/4 length trousers of any type are unflattering.
Funnily enough, friends used to call me a coat hanger and I could wear anything but I could never pull a cold shoulder top off. Then I think, why did I even try?
Crocs - I really hate them. They are like weird space alien shoes.

ProvincialLady2024 · 01/08/2024 23:36

High heels. They are uncomfortable, they damage feet and they hinder running in a emergency (burning building, a threatening male etc).

Polyester because it's cruel to make clothes that make people sweat.

PermanentTemporary · 01/08/2024 23:43

I know it's 15 years or so ago now but those unbelievably high heels. I remember a Guardian fashion journalist writing that '10cm is a good day height for shoes' and I just laughed out loud. Obviously cruel to the wearer's feet but also cruel because anyone actually moving around in them looked so terrible, they were only meant for porn sitting on a bar stool in. I hate the sound of stilettos on a pavement as well, it's so ugly.
