What are the cruellest fashions of recent decades?

What are the fashions which are most cruel to the people wearing them? Either due to impracticalily, discomfort or embarrassment?

I was wondering about this in the park on the weekend. There was a lady wearing a short flippy skirt. When she was standing up, it looked an ok length and she looked nice (it would never suit me!).

But she had a kid with her and was bending over to pick things off the grass. When she did this, when sitting on the grass, you could see all of her knickers and bum. There were other families with her who would also have been able to see everything.

Is this not embarrassing for her? Does she not mind? Or does she not realise?

If the latter, then this is a cruel fashion and very impractical. You need to be able to bend down.

Another cruel fashion for me is tight pencil skirts with a slit up the back, because the skirt rides up 😮

I have seen some girls recently in strange little tight-fitting babygros, with very short legs and straps or short sleeves. They are flesh coloured and look like some kind of very restrictive underwear and the person forgot to get dressed.

I've only started noticing these in the last couple of weeks, but they're everywhere all of a sudden, and don't look good even on young women with the most beautiful figures.

Underwire bras. I swear, that wire has a mind of its own and finds a way to stab you in the ribs in the most public settings.

Stilletos. Can't run in them, can barely walk, feet deforming monstrosities. Such a shame I really like wearing them very occasionally, can't figure out why but they make me feel some kinda way.

Young men with their pants below their bums so you can see their horrible underwear. Do they not realise this trend came from prisons and what it means there? So ick

Yoga pants / shorts on the high street. Too much on display in an inappropriate setting. Even if she has the body to pull it off it's just tacky. Just my opinion though.

What do the low-hanging trousers mean in prison?

RampantIvy · 01/08/2024 08:23

Agree with most of the above.

I think make up to enhance features is lovely, but most of the stuff I see these days turns women into caricatures of themselves.

So many women look so artificial with fake this and fake that. It's not a look I like and is very ageing.

One of the women on Love Island is the same age as DD (24) and looked about 35.

mitogoshi · 01/08/2024 08:28

I disagree about 3/4 length trousers and trainers, unlike most the other examples they are comfortable, cover the bits they should, ok for British summer...

midgetastic · 01/08/2024 08:32

Skin coloured stuff is designed to shock - laugh at our reluctance to bare all , make people feel uncomfortable

  • just like so many young fashion before

Enormous tattoos - where people get their whole leg or arm covered. It's a cruel fashion because they will be stuck with it when the fashion changes, and there's no hiding it as there might be with a smaller tattoo.

Just been on holiday and never seen so many women with big tattos (now turned to black smudges) especially on their thighs

isitfridaay · 01/08/2024 08:38

The seamless shorts and crop top or unitard - especially in nude

NashvilleQueen · 01/08/2024 08:40

A small tattoo on the arm of a member of the armed forces or something tiny on an ankle is just about ok.

The armed forces? I hope you aren't including officer class in that?

Ridiculous snobbery 😆

I'm not sure what they "mean" but in the US the prisoners' trousers hang low because belts/drawstrings are not permitted (suicide risk). Why they can't just give them trousers that fit to their waist so their bottoms hold up the trousers, I don't know!

Skinny jeans look pretty bad on almost everyone except Kate Moss or those with very long slim legs.
Skinny jeans or skinny trousers of any sort on men just looked so bad.
Men wearing no socks with slipper-style shoes.. yikes.

Bike shorts when not actually riding a bike 🤢

They’re not flattering on anybody but seem to be favoured by very overweight women - I don’t want to see every inch of your arse or your cellulite whilst going about my day!

StarlightLady · 01/08/2024 08:45

I regret contributing to this thread now! Rather than commenting on style, it has almost got personal. A slagging off session for other women!

And if your knickers show once in a blue moon, providing you have clean knickers on, it’s no big deal.

Isn't it intentional anyway. Like a tennis skirt? DS's GF was wearing a very short skirt yesterday, with occasional glimpses of her black boy short knickers, just like PE knickers really.

jay55 · 01/08/2024 08:50

Visible thongs and low rise jeans combo

Sandyankles · 01/08/2024 08:54

Nashville - not snobbery. I dislike the look of tattoos on nearly everyone, especially women. But I can understand why a soldier might want to have the symbol of their regiment, indicating brotherhood and loyalty to their comrades, tattooed on their arm.

Not at all the same as some of the enormous, hideous tattoos I’ve seen in the last few days!!

Fully agree with this. Nothing worse than an old, wrinkly tattoo.

Deathraystare · 01/08/2024 09:02

Plus the extremely revealing leggings and hot pants that most young women are currently wearing.

Ugh! I saw a woman wearing those revealing shorts. More like knickers really. Very very revealing. She might not be 'selling' it but she was sure advertising...

And those leggings where they seem to have a padded enormous bum.

Cold shoulder tops. I've never seen a more unflattering garment.

Always worn to look glamorous, but looks like (imo) the frumpiest item ever. I've never seen a woman look good in one. Yet the same women could look lovely in other clothes.

Was coming on to say exactly this

That's not cruel. All you need is the brains not to bend over in public when wearing one.

Sounds like post-lipo/bbl compression wear.

They are the worst. They could be the most expensive, designer piece but would still look crass, they just cannot look good.

Nothing is worse? Literally nothing?

I personally can't wait until I'm wrinkled and my tattoos look aged with me, and I most certainly won't be judging those without for having 'plain' looking old people skin, that's for sure.

Nope - unfortunately not!

The wearer can avoid that, yes. That's not really the point. The point is that clothes shouldn't restrict your movement or prevent you from performing normal activities.

1questionfromme · 01/08/2024 09:28

Anything that is the same tone as the wearers skin so that they look as though they're naked. It's not flattering, even on the most fit and toned person.

But most formal wear does exactly that as well.
