What are the cruellest fashions of recent decades?

What are the fashions which are most cruel to the people wearing them? Either due to impracticalily, discomfort or embarrassment?

I was wondering about this in the park on the weekend. There was a lady wearing a short flippy skirt. When she was standing up, it looked an ok length and she looked nice (it would never suit me!).

But she had a kid with her and was bending over to pick things off the grass. When she did this, when sitting on the grass, you could see all of her knickers and bum. There were other families with her who would also have been able to see everything.

Is this not embarrassing for her? Does she not mind? Or does she not realise?

If the latter, then this is a cruel fashion and very impractical. You need to be able to bend down.

Another cruel fashion for me is tight pencil skirts with a slit up the back, because the skirt rides up 😮

Pencil skirts only ride up when they’re too small

Round these parts, the only acceptable shade of fake tan seems to be deepest mahogany, accompanied by tarantula leg eyelashes, pneumatically pumped lips and thick painted-on black eyebrows.
To complete the look, one must wear skin-tight, almost see-through leggings and a crop top. The pièce de résistance being a pair of sliders and a vape, draped artfully from the rubber lips. Divine.

Orangeandgold · 02/08/2024 00:30

Nude coloured leggings.

if I’m wondering if you are half naked from a distance because your clothes are the same colour of your skin, I don’t think that’s a good look.

sausawyee · 02/08/2024 00:40

In their day waterfall cardigans.

The black leggings and t shirt combo that cuts at an awful length.

Men in loose baggy tracksuit bottoms.

DamnYerEyes · 02/08/2024 14:26

Not sure if this counts but.. mullet hair. Can't believe it's back! Confused

ProvincialLady2024 · 01/08/2024 23:36

High heels. They are uncomfortable, they damage feet and they hinder running in a emergency (burning building, a threatening male etc).

Polyester because it's cruel to make clothes that make people sweat.

Yes, not a fashion as such, but totally agree polyester is cruel. Why would anyone try to sell someone a polyester dress with fitted (so touching armpit) sleeves in the summer? The sweat!! There are no warnings for people that they will smell after 1 hour.

Another one for me is shorts which ride up between the thighs if you walk for over 2 mins. This happens for people like me who don't have a thigh gap, I think?

I have started to make my own shorts by cutting trousers to exactly the right length (mid thigh). I find the shorts in the shops too short.

I remember seeing a woman in a train station walking round with a nude bodysuit. She was very tall so she was noticible. I thought she was naked and had to do a double take.

I'm very hmmm about the current male fashion to wear their trousers/jeans/joggers underneath their arse so we can all see their boxers.
The other day on the bus a young man got up and rang the bell and went and waited in front of the exit door for the bus to stop. I was standing in the wheelchair area so he was dead in front of me. He was dressed in a tee and trackies and looked perfectly respectable but as the bus pulls up, before he disembarks, he literally pulled his tracksuit down at the back to ensure his underwear was showing and stepped off. Was so funny to see.

I’ve seen a lot of young men wearing those slider shoes, you know the ones that look like slippers, teamed with knee length socks. Nowt funny about that it’s just a terrible sight to behold.

What do the low-hanging trousers mean in prison?

it's a signal that the wearer is "available" for sex

More likely that they were not allowed to wear belts for personal safety reasons and the safety of others.

Edited

When I was younger, anybody with the socks and sandles combo was seen as an anorak, very uncool. I still think it isn't a good look to this day!

Southener · 03/08/2024 12:18

Skinny jeans when you are, like me, rather doughy. Like a sausage squeezed into a too-tight casing.
Same for men too. I always see bad when see chunky fellas trying to do it the skinny jean thing.

I know I'm going to get linched, but I hate Birkenstocks. They are huge chunky, look ugly, and make feet look huge. They don't compliment any outfit, let alone skirts and dresses.

What are the fashions which are most cruel to the people wearing them? Either due to impracticalily, discomfort or embarrassment?

Not sure which of these you think applies to Birkenstocks.

Happyher · 03/08/2024 12:56

Piercings and tattoos

DietrichandDiMaggio · 03/08/2024 12:57

Lots of people just saying things that they don't like the look of on here, rather than answering the OP's question.

MimiPopsy · 03/08/2024 13:05

Cruel fashion:
thongs: UTIs and they look embarrassing
Pointy shoes and heels: torture for feet
Human hair wigs is a disgusting industry that exploits women on both ends
Fake nails cured with UVA lamps causing health issues and cancer
Pyjama and fluffy slippers, feathers on sleeves as going out outfit
Anything revealing like blazer with no top undernearth, bum cheeks hanging out shorts, it's the opposite of liberating to dress to the male gaze.

I know but she then said embarrassing so it got conflated

I really hate the trend of false lashes. Like someone else said, they look ‘mucky’ and like an eye infection waiting to happen. Just horrible. Just get a nice mascara and fuck off.

I love colourful, short-ish gel nails but acrylics give me the heebie-jeebies, especially if they’re really long.

I hate the trend for cheap ‘fast fashion’ pushed by online retailers such as PLT, boohoo and shein. It’s all such poor quality that even if it fits (for the majority of people it doesn’t) it just looks so awful. I was in Manchester City centre for the first time in a few years and most of the people out and about were dressed like an absolute disaster. When I was a teenager Manchester used to be SO COOL (early 2000s) but I think the rise of these awful online giants that sell shit clothes for 5p has kind of ruined that. I also blame ‘TikTok hauls’ and the cost of living crisis.

Any of the shit Molly-Mae wears. She looks like a thumb in joggers.

Has it ever occurred to you that some women and girls simply like to dress like that? Not everyone revolves their life around attracting the ‘male gaze’ 🙄

coxesorangepippin · 04/08/2024 03:01

Camel toe playsuits. We always know when summer has arrived in A&E when those bad boys come out!

That's your view and mine is that it's embarrassing for them.

Not everything is for the male gaze. Some lesbian women wear/do these things too.

Personally l would not give a pair of heels houseroom but no issues with other people.

Thong bikinis. Yet to see anyone who looks good in them.
