Really niche trends only you seem to remember

I'm not taking big fashions that everyone associates with an era, just those flash in the pan things that stick in your mind for some reason.

Like the early 90s there was 'ankle length denim skirts with square toed ankle boots' - I remember this as I wore that combo to my first gig without adults (Stereo MCs, 1993)

Then about a year later, GCSE year, came 'baggy cropped jumper over long white shirt', definitely wore that.

Early 00s came 'combats tucked into really pointy high heeled ankle boots', which I didn't wear but I did buy some metallic pointy boots on a whim, which I still own and occasionally wear for goth or steampunk events.

Which micro trends stick in your mind?

I loved the reversible quilted sweatshirts. I had one with a large print of Mickey Mouse on the front and when you wore it inside out it was covered in little versions of Mickey Mouse.

I can't remember if it was quilted or just padded. But everyone had one. I'm 49 and this was when I was about 10.

Anyone remember them?

Yes! I’m 44 and has one around age 7, so we are aligned… mine was Dennis the Menace and my main recollection is how bloody HOT it was. I ran around a lot as a kid and did not need my sweatshirts to be quilted.

I came here to say the skirt over trousers trend. Late 90s I reckon

Definitely late 90s into early 00s. I went to uni in 1999 and they were around in both sixth form and early uni days before thankfully dying out.

I had a blue dress like this, after I saw a Bjork wearing one on top of the pops. Very mid 90’s. I was obviously doing lots of cultural appropriation back then.

Was it from Jane Norman by any chance, I had something similar is black and blue

I had one with Winnie the Pooh on. I was pregnant with DS1 and my in-laws cat used to sit on my bump when I wore it there.

Dresses over jeans or trousers was a great look for wide hips and short fat legs. It was a western version of the salwar kameez, which is beautiful.

Oh yes, I did this with the shawl over hips! Loved it. Gosh this is bringing back some long buried memories!

Around 1978 I had a pair of long socks that were in bright rainbow coloured stripes and they had individual toes knitted into them, like gloves. Anyone else have those?

Winter41 · 30/07/2024 20:32

I remember the thigh high socks. I had them.in all sorts of weird colours and patterns. Worn with. Shoes that were sorted of like a canvas pe pump but with a platform heel.

I also remember a trend for long flowery dresses and floppy velvet hats.

Cropped tops with inappropriate slogans on them.

And a summer where everyone wore neon green and orange.

TheLongRider · 30/07/2024 20:41

When GHD straighteners first came out in the early 2000s you were no-one unless you had poker straight hair fried to within an inch of its life.

Also ponchos had a moment in the early 2000s, to go with boho chic and Ugh boots with the sides caved in and filthy soles.

bridgetreilly · 30/07/2024 20:43

Early 1980s velvet knickerbockers. They were all I wanted aged about 8.

My friend did, but I found them incredibly uncomfortable.

merryandbrightdelight · 30/07/2024 21:03

Footless tights with denim shorts or a denim skirt, and a long beaded necklace that went round your neck once as a choker, then again with the second bit hanging right down

Toe socks!

Boho long skirts with disk belts

(90s child)

VeronicaCreepcheese · 30/07/2024 21:52

I would probably kill for some of these - specifically, the mid-heeled version. I had them in black, and have always wanted them in blue gingham (with painted daisies), which some girls in my town did have and which I envied hugely. I'm biding my time patiently and awaiting their comeback in Urban Outfitters and I will POUNCE when I see them.

Also, @TwigletsAndRadishes, I had some of those in 2005-ish. They felt ever so weird.

Oh my god you remember the baby dummy thing?! People at my school actually used to put them in their mouth too. I wasn't ever allowed one. But when I mention this fashion when reminiscing people never remember it!!

I have zero clue where did it even came from? Do you remember?

Well, I think France. I feel like some kids came back from France with them and the next summer I went and found them!

NotSentFromIphone · 30/07/2024 22:46

Mid 90's neon coloured trainers and denim jeans in all colours.

Late 90's, faux velvet ankle length skirt, bought mine in Mackays, can remember a coffee brown one but I bought the (awful) dark bottle green.

What were these weird trouser and skirt (skort?) things, late 90's, in material that made people look like a skinny astronaut?

LaMarschallin · 30/07/2024 22:47

Haven't read all the thread as it's really long, so sorry if this has been mentioned already.
Does anybody remember swimming hats in the early 70s which had fake ponytails stuck to the back?
It looked a bit like there was a hole in the cap which you'd pulled your hair through.
Always seemed to be on a stand in the chemist (why?) next to the swimming hats covered in flowers.
Nobody seems to remember the ponytail ones. I was very young but the memory is really strong Confused

NotSentFromIphone · 30/07/2024 22:48

Rave dummies, us teenagers didn't realise they were for drug users to help stop their teeth chattering, so I've heard!

FloofPaws · 30/07/2024 22:55

I had a white 'singlet' (my mum told me the name, it was basically an over tee shirt I wore over a plain coloured tee shirt
I also had a skirt with the denim waist and pockets but from top of bum was like a ra-ra esque lace skirt - it was so bloody short though my mum made me return it lol 😝

SinisterBumFacedCat · 30/07/2024 23:24

Early 80’s, hair bands with glittery things on springs like 2 antennas. I had green glittery stars. My friend had red glittery hearts.
Also there was a fashion for tying crochet swirls on your ponytails, I think this might have been a local thing.

notasgreenasiamcabbagelooking · 30/07/2024 23:29

Does anyone remember a fashion for really bright, almost neon leather jackets, around the year 2000? I lived in Milan at the time and they were really popular that spring.

I had one of these. I’m a bit older than you. It was from c&a. My cousin also remembers it fondly because in those days the cousins got bags of your old stuff from your mum - so you were also stylish but maybe a little behind the times.

I don’t remember ponytails being attached, but highlight caps were sold in the chemists. You pulled strands of hair through the hundreds of holes and then applied the bleach to the strands. Could it be those you are thinking of?

Hypercolour we're the t-shirts. I guess they didn't stick around as they generally showed everyone the wearer's sweaty pits.

Ah yes. The staple of an aerobics class round my way. Worn with shiny skin tight cycling shorts 😂

It might have been entirely localised to the schools that were near the Harlequin Centre in Watford, but when I was a young teen, maybe 1995-1997, Giorgio sweatshirts from Sports Direct (or whatever it was called back then) were all the rage. Everyone at school had one, I remember begging my mum to buy me one.

In hindsight I think we probably all thought we were getting a Georgio Armani sweatshirt for a tenner Grin

It was actually a rip-off of the packaging of the popular shop/ perfume ‘Giorgio Beverley Hills’ and they started life off as stripey sweatshirts/T shirts. The brand was started by two fellas from a market stall in Romford back in the late 80’s early 90’s and went on to become a manufacturing and supply company known as ‘Local Boyz’ based in the East End. They did go on to supply Sports Direct. Ripping off designer styles/logos was their schtick.

The madder thing is that Giorgio/Local Boyz is listed as a brand on Etsy/Depop and the ‘vintage’ items now fetch more than they cost originally 😂
