Really niche trends only you seem to remember

I'm not taking big fashions that everyone associates with an era, just those flash in the pan things that stick in your mind for some reason.

Like the early 90s there was 'ankle length denim skirts with square toed ankle boots' - I remember this as I wore that combo to my first gig without adults (Stereo MCs, 1993)

Then about a year later, GCSE year, came 'baggy cropped jumper over long white shirt', definitely wore that.

Early 00s came 'combats tucked into really pointy high heeled ankle boots', which I didn't wear but I did buy some metallic pointy boots on a whim, which I still own and occasionally wear for goth or steampunk events.

Which micro trends stick in your mind?

Neon coloured tight crinkly mini dresses- with cut outs. I’m pretty sure the make was called Hunza. Some of them had rings holding the top and skirt together, like a swimsuit. Often worn with white stilettos.

At a similar time (late 80s), there were mini skirts and crop tops made from chamois leather, with fringing and beading. These were worn with matching boots.

turbonerd · 30/07/2024 17:45

Anyone remember the suede Peter Pan pointy boots. Oh my god. They had to be Green, and I would still climb a medium sized hill to get hold of a pair again.

charlieinthehaystack · 30/07/2024 17:47

remember my daughter haunted me until I bought of a pair of tracksuits bottoms that had poppers up the legs! everything to wear then seemed to be neon

TwigletsAndRadishes · 30/07/2024 17:52

The “Indian Summer” in about 2002 or 3. I was wearing corsets made out of sari fabric with cropped flared pants with mirror discs and embroidery on and a triangular shawl round one hip, Indian bangles and a bindi on my head.

Tsk, you'd scolded for cultural appropriation if you did that now. Wink
I remember the thing of wearing a triangular shawl tied around your hips as well.

Jeans with a dress over the top. WTF was that all about?

TiffanyIceberg · 30/07/2024 17:52

Neon tights with black fishnets/whalenets over the top.
Squash socks with the tiny pompoms at the back.
White slouch socks rolled down.
Chunky black shoes with Grolsch beer lids as fasteners.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 30/07/2024 17:56

About ten-12 years ago. Cold shoulder tops and those bloody awful open toed boots. I never did either of those. Hated them.

Jelly bags. We all had them for school - about 1985?

Mismatched flourescent fleece socks set them off nicely!

Jelly bags - you had to put a 'cool' plastic bag in them something like 'Chelsea girl'. Also, tartan jeans (only in Scotland maybe)

Fridgetapas · 30/07/2024 17:57

Early 2000s - a coloured vest with a string vest over the top

You've just reminded me. Bay City Rollers jeans. Flared, but cropped above the ankle, with a thick band of tartan around the hem.

The worse micro trend that sticks in my mind was those awful skirt trouser pants! That only lasted briefly and I can't ever imagine those coming back into fashion!

I also remember those bright neon tracksuits by Diadora (I think) I had one in neon yellow and my sister had a neon orange one 😅 we went on holiday and so many kids had the same set.

This must have been around 1998 -2000

GraceUnderwire · 30/07/2024 18:08

Very late nineties/ early 00s, on the back of the trend for wearing a short dress/skirt over a pair of jeans, for a short while you could buy jeans/ hipster bottoms etc with a skirt actually attached. I had a pair of indigo denim stretchy flares with matching mini skirt attached.

pantsalot · 30/07/2024 18:11

Black Cord skirts. Mary Poppins style shoe boots - just found them on the Next website so must be 'in' again.

Was it Kappa? with the two women sat back to back on grey sweatshirts.
Teabag fabric on sweatshirts.
Weird textured bodycon dresses in cobalt blue or fuschia.
Bondage trousers with all the zips and d rings and straps.
I loved my victorian granny boots in the 80's.

90s

Chenille crop sleeveless jumpers over a white shirt that had the big cuffs

pop socks over the knee with skirt

There was a bizarre late 90s trend of coffee/brown/cream trio combos

00s

pointy stilettos with combats

long necklace with vest top and crop cardigan combo

I remember chenille jumpers, I hated them with a passion because they would shed everywhere and eventually looked oddly hairless.
Such a weird fabric.

Well you'd be out of order 😃It's not cultural appropriation for me...I'm Asian and it was the first time in my living memory that it was cool
to be brown,

And...we've been doing the whole jeans over dress thing for a while - you might even say we started it 😂(and in India, it's never stopped!).

turkeyboots · 30/07/2024 18:22

Pastel Head holdalls as a school bag. With baggy jeans and baggy cream, embroidered blouses were the thing at secondary.

And Chinese style velvet slippers in the early 00s. Not a trend which lasted through the winter.

JassyRadlett · 30/07/2024 18:24

Were stirrup pants a thing here? Huge in Australia in the early 90s. Followed by mid-90s ankle-length skirts in "ethnic" patterns ( no more cultural specificity than that). Bonus points if there were tinkly beads on the hem.

Hypercolour T-shirts were uniquely ill-suited to the Queensland climate but we wore them anyway.

Oh, and mood rings.

Oh, and mood rings.

They were indeed and my mother made me wear them pretty much every day tucked into snow boots from the ages of about 3 to 12 from September to March - she called them Ski Pants and had some weird sort of phobia that I'd die of hypothermia in the relatively mild climate of Central Manchester...

Canalboat · 30/07/2024 18:28

Tatare · 30/07/2024 13:38

Hypercolour we're the t-shirts. I guess they didn't stick around as they generally showed everyone the wearer's sweaty pits.

Oh god I had a body suit. Sweaty pits and sweaty boobs!

JimNast · 30/07/2024 18:30

@JassyRadlett , yes but we called them ski pants. We also had 'ethnic skirts'. They were cotton and very warm.
Mood rings were also a thing.
Hypercolour t-shirts were a thing but I didn't have one.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 30/07/2024 18:33

I had a blue dress like this, after I saw a Bjork wearing one on top of the pops. Very mid 90’s. I was obviously doing lots of cultural appropriation back then.

PiggyPlumPie · 30/07/2024 18:38

Must have been early/mid 90s - long black skirts with a slit up to the thigh. Think nearly everyone bar me wore one on a Friday night in the Pink Coconut in Derby.

Maybe lasted 6 weeks or so.

Twistybranch · 30/07/2024 18:38

Fridgetapas · 30/07/2024 17:57

Early 2000s - a coloured vest with a string vest over the top

I remember people wearing sweatbands with those too. Always black

Oh and “shrugs”

Sequin or crochet shrugs (little short sleeved boleros) with aforementioned cropped trousers or jeans. The ultimate 2005 going out out outfit.

Yes I had a silver sequin one from Oasis. And I remember I wore in Summer 2005 when dating my ex!
Also gold metallic bags, belts.
Topshop had leather metalic balerinas shoes in gold or silver, I had both each were £25 each, lovely and comfy.
Skinny jeans in 2004 and I wear them forever.
