Really niche trends only you seem to remember

I'm not taking big fashions that everyone associates with an era, just those flash in the pan things that stick in your mind for some reason.

Like the early 90s there was 'ankle length denim skirts with square toed ankle boots' - I remember this as I wore that combo to my first gig without adults (Stereo MCs, 1993)

Then about a year later, GCSE year, came 'baggy cropped jumper over long white shirt', definitely wore that.

Early 00s came 'combats tucked into really pointy high heeled ankle boots', which I didn't wear but I did buy some metallic pointy boots on a whim, which I still own and occasionally wear for goth or steampunk events.

Which micro trends stick in your mind?

In circa 2002 FCUK writing on French Connection items.
I had every possible each t shirt with the slogan, was obsessed by it.

The “Indian Summer” in about 2002 or 3. I was wearing corsets made out of sari fabric with cropped flared pants with mirror discs and embroidery on and a triangular shawl round one hip, Indian bangles and a bindi on my head.

Tsk, you'd scolded for cultural appropriation if you did that now. Wink
I remember the thing of wearing a triangular shawl tied around your hips as well.

Jeans with a dress over the top. WTF was that all about?

Dresses over jeans or trousers was a great look for wide hips and short fat legs. It was a western version of the salwar kameez, which is beautiful.

Echobelly · 30/07/2024 18:52

I have to admit... I liked the skirt/dress over trousers thing. It was around 2000, I know that as I have pics of me in such get up in New York with my best mate that year.

I've just remembered buying coloured fishnet tights, cutting a hole in the crotch and wearing them as a top over a white ribbed vest was a thing...and boxing boots...I had a white and silver pair...

Sandwichgen · 30/07/2024 18:57

1980: huge thigh-length T-shirts tied on one hip

1979: tiered folk skirts with a triangular scarf in the same material tied over one hip

I loved the reversible quilted sweatshirts. I had one with a large print of Mickey Mouse on the front and when you wore it inside out it was covered in little versions of Mickey Mouse.

I can't remember if it was quilted or just padded. But everyone had one. I'm 49 and this was when I was about 10.

Anyone remember them?

M&S I think. I had one too. There was also a coral/pink version but I can’t remember what was on it.

GreatDarkWing · 30/07/2024 19:00

2013 sweatshirts with a front panel made of silky, patterned material. Why?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 30/07/2024 19:05

I was a teenager in the early 80s and count myself very lucky to have worn so much crap without there being bloody cameras everywhere.

I was earning well in London in the 90s and if I could keep one "style" it would be 90s workwear.

But when it comes to micro-trends there was a year or so when kitten heels and round toed shoes were a thing. I recoiled then and I would recoil now. Just very wrong.

PruneInTheNest · 30/07/2024 19:07

I wore a Chinese style silk dress (in baby pink) with glittery chopsticks in my hair, black chunky platform strappy sandals and glitter sprayed in my hair (and basically everywhere) to a birthday party disco when I was 7/8 literally thought I was the dogs bollocks (I did actually look super cute, but being Caucasian that definitely would be heavily frowned upon now as cultural appropriation)

Yes and the satin colours of the time were bright neon green and bright orange.

"Acid brights"!!

Satin, or with a contrast piping. Loved those.

Anyone remember "slouch socks"? Worn over leggings.

I remember my grey trousers that had a skirt over the top. They were like school trousers but I loved wearing them in 2000. Plus, the stretchy plastic choker around the same time. Oh and the tiny butterfly clips I used to wear in my hair 😁
How about the neon t-shirts that used to change colour in the heat in the 80s? They may have been Fat Willie's ones, I never had one but wanted one!

All of this has taken me back to 1999. Thank you.

Those "chain mail " necklaces in early 2000s

Really niche trends only you seem to remember

Technics or Dready jackets.

Cut-off Levis, black wolford tights and DMs was definitely not just you @lollipoprainbow, my best friend & I wore that outfit for about a year, in 1988, with a tight black polo-neck t-shirt.

Caitlin Moran is still rocking this look. ☺️

WalkInAStraightLine · 30/07/2024 19:16

Also, 90s stonewashed jeans with a black belt with big buckle... bodysuit and baggy denim shirt over the top.

Scandiviews1 · 30/07/2024 19:20

90s here

Bodies with coloured jeans and a light denim shirt.

Leggings, DM boots (12 hole) and a granddad shirt or lumberjack shirt.

DM boots and ball dresses from Laura Ashley.

Velvet hipsters with tight satin shirts.

Bluetack coloured nail varnish

Was it Kappa? with the two women sat back to back on grey sweatshirts.
Teabag fabric on sweatshirts.
Weird textured bodycon dresses in cobalt blue or fuschia.
Bondage trousers with all the zips and d rings and straps.
I loved my victorian granny boots in the 80's.

Kappa slappers 😂

StormingNorman · 30/07/2024 19:26

Rayban Wayfarer knock offs with neon arms.

LA Gears with multiple pairs of different coloured laces. All woven together to make patters.

Getting t-shirts printed with the image of your choice. Literally hundreds to choose from.

Justleaveitblankthen · 30/07/2024 15:25

Oh yes, in the late 80's- early 90's I remember clubbing in shiny cycling pants with cut off denim shorts above. Statement belt and the obligatory DM's.
Black baseball cap worn backwards, bumbag and John Lennon style sunglasses (inside, in a dark club) 😎😂

Are you actually Yazz?!

Hobbes8 · 30/07/2024 19:36

I had an 8-ball jacket around the early 90s. It was a hideous tri colour suede bomber jacket with an 8 on the back. Ant off of Ant and Dec wore one in Byker Grove (when he went blind and fell off the stage).

Later in the 90s we used to wear glitter hairspray and glow in the dark glitter gel for clubbing. Wafts of glitter would trail us as we walked and you’d find traces of it on your face for weeks.

Mesh, beaded and sequinned backless slippers that came in different colours.

Nostalgia wow 🤩

mixedpeel · 30/07/2024 20:00

Dorothy Perkins, 1987ish, used to sell patterned tights with all sorts of designs and motifs. Everything from just dots to witches on broomsticks as I recall. I used to spend aaaages in there choosing.

Dresses over jeans or trousers was a great look for wide hips and short fat legs. It was a western version of the salwar kameez, which is beautiful.

Hence why I totally bought into it. 😂

Hwx · 30/07/2024 20:23

Early/Mid 00s:

Falling leaf necklaces. Chunky and brass or gold coloured, probably going to make your chest green.

Or a plastic beaded one wrapped around and sometimes one layer tied in a knot.

Shorts over tights.

Backcombed Quiff / pouf top knots.

Dying the under layer of hair black and the top layers bleach blonde.

The big checked fringed scarf (black and white usually) worn with a triangle at the front.

Bobbyelvis4ever · 30/07/2024 20:25

People at our school either wore The Sweater Shop (massive oversized t-shirts, randomly woolen) or Naf Naf. Never both. Mid-nineties, I guess?

The kangol hat was from a similar era. I had one, I loved it. Not sure why - I had a fringe and it really didn't work with it
