Marc Jacobs tote bag

What do you think about the Marc Jacob’s tote bag. Are they a bit chavvy or are they tasteful. My normal bag of choice is the Mulberry Alexa but I’m after something a bit lighter to take on holiday.

Have you seen this one? So roomy, super comfy, can fit everything in for a trip to the beach or shopping. Lovely soft felt fabric and fully lined. Classy logo too! 😁

Saw them in TK Maxx today.
Wouldn’t be my cup of tea…

Ellsx6 · 30/07/2024 01:03

I have one and love it. Bought it last year for around £400 ish and i use it every single day and still perfect condition holds its shape well and holds loads!

TrioG · 30/07/2024 01:08

Most of the people I see wearing this bag have admitted they have fake versions albeit good fakes, but do you really want to spend that amount of money on a bag people may think is a fake?

However if you love it, buy it and enjoy it but do it for you not for the status it gives you

cartwheelsandhandstands · 30/07/2024 08:29

I prefer the Chloe ones

JimNast · 30/07/2024 09:19

@GertrudeGarbo , do you have a link please? I quite like the Waitrose one but I'd need to see it, but you can't go wrong with Marks & Sparks.

Jazzjazzyjulez · 30/07/2024 09:59

Not the point of the thread but why buy a fake? Just to impress people? I never get it - you know it is a fake, so it can't make you feel good?

Also, anyone you hope to impress with it can smell a fake a mile away!

Dweetfidilove · 30/07/2024 10:05

I wouldn't call them chavvy, but seeing them around (they are everywhere), I think I'd feel robbed if I spent good money on that bag for life looking spectacle.

And I can barely stand anything with the brand splashed all across it.

jay55 · 30/07/2024 10:15

I love mine, I have the denim one that doesn't have the big writing on it. And a ginormous one as a beach bag which I got from an outlet.
I don't mind if mumsnet sees me as a chav.

MaltipooMama · 30/07/2024 10:43

I think it just comes down to personal taste, my friend has the first one you linked and it suits her wonderfully as it's exactly her style, I wouldn't get one as it isn't really in keeping with how I dress day to day!

Mencia · 30/07/2024 12:10

I got one of these (plenty of prints available each season) last year and love it

the Merci Paris canvas bags are really sturdy and roomy although quite expensive for what they are; anyway, mine is very practical for shopping. Size L, also cross body

I think the Marc Jacobs are a bit like Michael Kors a few years ago - too popular and became a bit “common” as a result.

I had the same issue as you in that I like the Marc Jacobs tote and they are a great size and shape, but I didn’t want to spend the money on a bag everyone has and will inevitably be “unfashionable” soon, so I actually bought a dupe from Amazon! Does the job and if I tire of it soon, it was only around 20 quid.

SamQuint · 30/07/2024 14:38

I'm a total chav and don't care, I bought a MJ tote and found it so useful that I bought another one in a different colour. They hold loads and never seem to lose their shape.

Waitformetoarrive · 30/07/2024 18:26

I liked the MJ tote when they came out but think there are too many fakes around and loads of people have them. I bought the Russell and Bromley bag instead and it is lovely, very pleased with my purchase.

SuperGinger · 30/07/2024 21:19

Not my cup of tea but I actively avoid conspicuous consumption.

Poor Titus. Smile

Titus, the bag no one wants or needs

SincerelyTabi · 30/07/2024 21:56

Sorry to me that says TK Maxx

GatoradeMeBitch · 30/07/2024 23:55

If any brand wants to use me as a walking advertisement they can pay me for the privilege, I'm not paying them!

I'd buy a fake or a dupe if I liked the shape of a bag but wanted to spend the money elsewhere.

I have a MJ camera style bag that's quite rare and expensive but the fakes I see coming back from abroad etc look pretty much the same so what difference does it make really.

Also, who's impressed by other peoples handbags?!

I know really wealthy people who buy fakes. They have real and they have fakes. They like the design and the style goes with their look but they think it's a waste of money to buy some more seasonal designer bags.

They will buy an £8k Chanel but not a £1200 non classic Dior for example.

And no one would guess because they carry themselves in a manner that wouldn't have you guessing. And the fakes in question are very very good. They cost £200-300.

3CustardCreams · 31/07/2024 04:01

Don’t like it. Too obnoxious
If you like overt branding - what about Louis Vuitton Neverful? I have 2 in medium. Very functional but obviously designer which I guess is the attraction of overt branding.

MrsMop1964 · 31/07/2024 04:19

I think as a fashion item these are 'over', and overpriced. I do like that type of bag, just not this particular product.

SincerelyTabi · 31/07/2024 08:35

What would you say is 'in' @MrsMop1964?

Any tote bags at all?

Is Longchamp making a comeback?

LiberteEgaliteBeyonce · 31/07/2024 08:45

It's a great bag. Had mine for several years and I am going to buy another one as my current one is a bit battered (I treated it badly).
It's a great and versatile bag. Could not care less if it's chavvy chic Wink

Whithersoever · 31/07/2024 11:42

Completely off topic, but what Alexa do you have OP. So tempted.
