Wedding outfit for reluctant teen

Would love some ideas for my 17 year old daughter to wear to a family wedding. She thinks she needs to wear a dress as the other teen girls will be (including her sister). The others are all wearing pale blue or green maxi fitted bodycon dresses. She has an hourglass figure and it is very difficult to find styles that suit her. Anything that fits her round the waist does not fit her bust or hips. It is this Saturday. She is very reluctant to look or go shopping and I am feeling stuck.
Any ideas would be gratefully received. Thank you

@Bohoboo Would she be better with separates rather than a dress? A nice flowy Maxi length skirt with a fitted top tucked in? You could add a nice belt?

No links to specifics but something along these lines? That way you can get a top that fits her bust properly

I really like the purple top, green skirt for me!

Also I just remembered Pour Moo! Lots of clothes that all fit me when I did an order from there. Amazing.

Damn you autocorrect!

newfriend05 · 23/07/2024 20:53

My shape was like this ( I've got a bit bigger as I've aged) but my go to then and now it's still a maxi skirt and bandeau or a wrap top , maxi.s and Bandeau are very in at the moment and are everywhere and crop wraps I see lots if young girls in ...

Agree. Their clothes are beautiful, but even with their biggest cup size I would still need both cups to fit one of my boobs!

OP, your daughter has my sympathy. I'm a size 8-10 with 32Fs and they've really only appeared in the last couple of years so I have had to completely re-learn how to dress for them. My tips are:

  1. V-neck, button up the front loose dresses or jumpsuits, ideally with a tie waist to cinch but can add a belt afterwards
  2. Wrap dresses (it's a cliche for a reason)
  3. separates- get a go-to body suit in black and white/cream and wear with a full skirt and heels

A separate point- make sure she also has a really great bra. Honestly, it can completely change the way you feel in your clothes. I like my Gossard front fastening ones. And I've previously been very sceptical about Victoria's Secret but I recently got one of their non-padded ones in a 32DDD and it's great.

Hope she is ok. It's hard enough being a teenager and feeling ill at ease in your body without having to try and dress a figure that most clothes just aren't made right for these days.

If you get really stuck, you can always DM me her measurements and I'll see if there's anything of mine that would fit and I can courier it over to you for a borrow.

Thank you, thats so kind

I look forward to seeing what you get!
I love shopping with my nieces (14 and 16) as I get to go into shops I hadn't previously heard of and try on outfits I hadn't thought of. Some of it even works. 😂

OneNewUser · 23/07/2024 22:18

One more suggestion! If you can find a dress that’s this style they generally work pretty well - you can size up & then tie the waist a bit tighter. Can also wear whatever bra you want

Wrap dresses are good for small waist and big bust. The only people who poo-poo them are those who don't have the big bust/small waist problem!

This one is pretty...

That’s not for the young people though

I realise this might not work for teens but just a suggestion.. Dresses for big busts although I think someone else suggested silk fred .https://www.silkfred.com/collection/big-boob-friendly/page/2?filter=1&gadsource=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1ezyl-2DhwMV16NQBh0yVAIlEAAYAiAAEgJoOPDBwE

It’s a difficult age for dresses, my dd who is 16 wore this to a recent wedding with a cropped jacket and nice shoes. She doesn’t like anything dressy at all & if not buying second hand she buys from UO

sashh · 24/07/2024 07:38

Rather than a suit what about a waist coat and a full skirt?

The link is to a website for larger and older women but I think the look would work on anyone.

At her age, get on Boohoo, Pretty Little Things (have to sift through on those sites but can be worth it) or ASOS. You will find something do not despair!

Edited to add, Quiz can occasionally have a blinder and are very structured.

Teenagehorrorbag · 24/07/2024 22:35

Dd is hourglass but hates dresses. Just had her prom and wore skinny black trousers, Highish strappy sandals, waistcoat and a really cool mans paisley jacket with black trim. She looked amazing!

We got it all from Vinted so took a while to source. It's a shame you don't have more time to think about what your DD would really like to wear.

Hope it's a fantastic day for you all, anyway.

Pliudev · 24/07/2024 22:54

Surely it's too late to buy from Vinted?

As I said. But maybe a waistcoat, jacket and trousers from a reasonably priced shop nearby? Just suggesting a look......

Oceangreyscale · 28/07/2024 14:40

What did she end up wearing?

BaronessBomburst · 04/08/2024 18:18

@Bohoboo How was the wedding? We'd love to know what she wore!

Bohoboo · 05/08/2024 07:51

Hi sorry for not replying. She found a dress she really liked in quiz. Was such a relief. Thank you for all your advice. Dresses with any kind of preformed bust shaping are just a complete no no which ruled out so many. But this one worked well. She sized up so the dress could fit across the bust area. Because it is stretchy material it still fit well elsewhere. The biggest win was that she felt good in it and she could wear one of the bras she liked under it without any alterations. Pic to follow
