Wedding outfit for reluctant teen

Would love some ideas for my 17 year old daughter to wear to a family wedding. She thinks she needs to wear a dress as the other teen girls will be (including her sister). The others are all wearing pale blue or green maxi fitted bodycon dresses. She has an hourglass figure and it is very difficult to find styles that suit her. Anything that fits her round the waist does not fit her bust or hips. It is this Saturday. She is very reluctant to look or go shopping and I am feeling stuck.
Any ideas would be gratefully received. Thank you

A lot of retailers have taken to drop shipping from 'concession partners'. Debenhams do. So do be careful where you order from.

i checked and this was next day delivery, which indicates not drop shipped. Anyway op hasn’t commented on the dress so I imagine it isn’t suitable.

Thank you, am checking all ideas and getting in a bit of a pickle about knowing who I have replied to. Am grateful to everyone for their ideas.

Could buying a bodycon she likes that fits properly at the bust and hips but large otherwise, be taken to a seamstress/tailor to custom fit it?

Newposter180 · 23/07/2024 10:30

I’m seeing how hard this is based on some of the absolutely dreadful (IMO) suggestions! Surely no 17 year old in their right mind wants to wear what looks like a 50s dressing up costume?! Sounds like she has a fantastic figure but naturally wants to wear something similar to the other girls her age. Personally, I’d get on ASOS and order loads on next day delivery to try. Most of their own brand stuff is stretchy - definitely not the nicest fabric to touch but might actually be what you need and something relatively fitted would probably look great on her. How about something like these?

Agreed @Newposter180 😂

Something stretchy and youthful would fit the bill perfectly.

I think this specialist brand could be perfect.

I had forgotten about them. They've only got Naomi, Camille, and Harper in stock in the dresses, but red Naomi might work, it's got the desired bodycon effect. They also have absolutely killer satin corset-style tops to team with a skirt or palazzos.

I’m a short hourglass with 34HH boobs and was quite surprised to find that a cowl neckline was quite flattering. Anything with a high neck, flounces or puffed sleeves just adds volume where it isn’t needed. I know it’s the wrong colour but maybe something in this sort of style.

Doesn't she own anything that she could wear and feel comfortable in? Far better that she should go in that than feel awkward and miserable all day.

Unfortunately not. She has virtually no clothes as she can't find anything that works for her figure. I managed to find a fab prom dress but it is too dressy for this

She is the sort of sizing that Pepperberry used to cater for, the clothes brand from Bravissimo. Sadly they stopped selling clothes and just sell bras now but you can still get some on Vinted, eBay etc.

It might be a bit tight getting it delivered in time, but they fit so well if you have large boobs. If she is a size 10 elsewhere get that size. They come in three different chest sizes for each dress size- curvy, really curvy and super curvy. I’d imagine she’s a really or super. You might need to ask the seller to show you the label as they don’t always put which one it is.

Pepperberry did lots of dresses suitable for weddings.

Thank you, yes think this is where we will end up heading. I have ordered a couple which aren't quite right but need to do another one. Love the brown one. Will investigate a strapless bra but that is a whole other stressful event for her - fuuuun

That's a good one!
Also Silk Fred (sorry) - this caught my eye because it has a shaped bust. I think the size 8 measurements given would be right for DD?

VERY unusually for 'anything goes' me, I actually feel the model looks too old for this style - which bodes well for a young person!

This is gorgeous!

I'd go for something belted/tied at the waist and just carefully belt/tie it to look right. Sometimes I have to sort of pleat/pin it a little at the back under the belt to get it to sit right.

Or maybe something like this or this (Lipsy from Next) with a looser top half that might have more bust room but belted to show off her waist. There might also be bust space in this one.

This one is bra friendly and looks like there's some bust space there. You could get a bigger size and remove their belt and add a tighter gold/silver one like this.

I feel your pain OP. My DD2 hardly has any clothes either because shopping is so unsuccessful, she just makes so with what she has that fits. My DD isn't a tiny waisted hourglass but she does have to find clothes to fit her hips and chest and has a short waist so really needs to have clothes that go in at the waist to show off her figure. Prom was awful. She wasn't able to wear the satin slip dresses everyone else was wearing and really the dress she ended up with wasn't a great fit for her boobs.

I'm reading these ideas with interest as we have a wedding reception to go to and DD will need an outfit. Mesh fabric is good for stretch and ruched bust is good for fit. I like the skirts people have posted. My DD looks great in a long skirt and cropped t-shirt. What kind of tops would make the outfit suitable for a wedding?

Wonderbra do an excellent strapless bra. It's the only one that's worked for me. bear in mind, it needs to be quite firm (tight) around the torso. Otherwise it will end up around her waist.

The other (more secure) option is to go for a bustier/corset style.

BaronessBomburst · 23/07/2024 12:44

How about something like this from Apricot? I'm a similar shape - 32FF bust, 10 waist, 12/14 hips and this really flatters me. I have it in a bright green.

Fabulous with heels and a clutch.
(Do 17 year olds wear heels?)

It's not extra space at the back she needs, but at the front.

The elasticated back enables her to size up to a size that fits over her boobs, but without being too loose around her waist - if someone size 14 wore the dress the elastic would expand in a way it wouldn't on someone with a size 10 waist, but it still has shape

GoldFrame · 23/07/2024 13:01

Stop posting clothes for old women!

I wouldn’t have been seen dead in pepper berry and I’m in my fifties. And absolutely no to palazzo pants and old lady wrap dresses or anything from marks and spencer.

She could maybe wear her most secure bra and just tuck in one of the straps for the one shoulder dress? It’s covering the cleavage so don’t think anything could “fall out” but depends if she’d be comfortable, might be worth a try at least! Hope you find something.

BaronessBomburst · 23/07/2024 13:38

I'm just back from Spain and France. I saw plenty of young women in palazzo pants. They even sell them in Ale Hop, which is aimed at teenagers.
I do agree about Pepperberry though. And M&S. 😂 DM used to dress me in BHS when I was that age and it was awful. I was desperate for something from C&A or Etam to fit.

BaronessBomburst · 23/07/2024 13:45

I've found Freya and Fantasie strapless bras to be really good.
I also like the Panache Tango ll balconette under v-necks. It's not too fuddy-duddy and gives a good upfront shape and plunging cleavage.
