Wedding outfit for reluctant teen

Would love some ideas for my 17 year old daughter to wear to a family wedding. She thinks she needs to wear a dress as the other teen girls will be (including her sister). The others are all wearing pale blue or green maxi fitted bodycon dresses. She has an hourglass figure and it is very difficult to find styles that suit her. Anything that fits her round the waist does not fit her bust or hips. It is this Saturday. She is very reluctant to look or go shopping and I am feeling stuck.
Any ideas would be gratefully received. Thank you

I’m sorry but that nobody’s child one would be a disaster - it’s short in the bodice already so on someone who is G cup it would be hanging off her boobs - really not a flattering look 🙃

This. A full bust cut isn't just about making the garment wider across the front, but also taller from waist to collar at the front.

If we approximate the breasts to hemispheres, you have to go further to travel around the curve of a hemisphere than to travel across the flat surface. The fabric has to go further both vertically and horizontally to fit around the breasts. This means that, for women with very large cup sizes, altering a shop-bought dress cannot work because there isn't enough vertical fabric to accommodate the breasts.

And this is why I get so annoyed with small-breasted women saying "I don't see what the problem is, just size up and cinch in with a belt".

This one from Asos is open backed so no bra, but might provide enough support by itself due to the shape and lacing ? It’s very pretty

So pretty thank you

Thank you everyone. Some good food for thought.

Try house of CB.

Not cheap but allows you to select a cup size and then dress. Lots of occasion wear on there and my dd best friend is a similar shape to your dd in both dress and cup size.

Their idea of "larger cup" is D-E and this girl is G cup.

I was peeved too when I saw that House of CB maxed out at E because evening dresses basically don't exist for H cups.

MaidOfAle · 23/07/2024 00:05

It's not extra space at the back she needs, but at the front.

This is the only nice dress I’ve seen on this thread (apologies I might have missed some)
Have y’all missed the fact she’s a teenager? Half of them are more suitable for Miss Marple Shock

No, we haven't missed this girl's age. Since Bravissimo stopped doing clothes, having G cup tits means that you wear what fits and you're grateful that you found anything that does fit and is remotely suitable for the occasion. "It's not my style" and "it's too old/young for me" are phrases that large-busted women and girls do not get the luxury of uttering.

Also came on to suggest separates. I like the matching co-ord top and skirt look with a long crop top and high waisted skirt so there's just a slim bit of waist. Zara and Farm Rio have had nice versions recently. Will see if I can find pics.

Jumpsuit - just bought a cobalt one with ruched chest from Phase Eight for my late teen to wear to a wedding.
They have lots of others too.

Also Nobody's Child have a big selection, including green.

Have added a couple of pics of nice co-ord sets...(Farm Rio is pricey and not everyone's cup of tea but I adore their co-ords) but also understand it's a really hard age for "occasion" wear for girls.

So many are still feeling very self-conscious and have harsh views about thier own bodies and how they don't fit a certain aesthetic . Be really careful not to fuel any of that kind of thinking.

I gave up on any kind of formality when ours where teens and they ended up in jeans and trainers at more than 1 wedding!

Another vote for separates. Mango usually have good ones for older teens. And you can get Mango clothes from Next with quick delivery.

I don't know whether Alice Fawke is still trading. You can but try.

I'm on the side of wrap dresses - particularly ones with tie waists, as more scope for adjustment is built in.

This is just the first one I found - there are plenty of them around. Even better if you can find one in a stretch fabric, because you can size down a little and let the wrap part stretch over the bust. (I do this and add a safety pin to the neckline, but a 17-year-old will have an insta-worthy cleavage!)

Doesn't she own anything that she could wear and feel comfortable in? Far better that she should go in that than feel awkward and miserable all day.

Agree. Their clothes are beautiful, but even with their biggest cup size I would still need both cups to fit one of my boobs!

OP, your daughter has my sympathy. I'm a size 8-10 with 32Fs and they've really only appeared in the last couple of years so I have had to completely re-learn how to dress for them. My tips are:

  1. V-neck, button up the front loose dresses or jumpsuits, ideally with a tie waist to cinch but can add a belt afterwards
  2. Wrap dresses (it's a cliche for a reason)
  3. separates- get a go-to body suit in black and white/cream and wear with a full skirt and heels

A separate point- make sure she also has a really great bra. Honestly, it can completely change the way you feel in your clothes. I like my Gossard front fastening ones. And I've previously been very sceptical about Victoria's Secret but I recently got one of their non-padded ones in a 32DDD and it's great.

Hope she is ok. It's hard enough being a teenager and feeling ill at ease in your body without having to try and dress a figure that most clothes just aren't made right for these days.

If you get really stuck, you can always DM me her measurements and I'll see if there's anything of mine that would fit and I can courier it over to you for a borrow.

TerrorAustralis · 23/07/2024 05:57

I feel her pain. Dressing for your boobs is a nightmare. You probably already know this, but these things help narrow down something flattering for an hourglass with huge boobs:

  • fitted bodice, always
  • fitted waist
  • v-neck is the most flattering, and avoid high necks at all costs
  • no large, puffy or flutter sleeves
  • no shirring across the bust
  • make sure she’s not swamped in fabric - knee length may be more flattering especially if she’s short-to-average height.

Is there an alterations service near you that could do an express job if you find something that needs tailoring? Often that’s the best solution for formal/occasionwear.

Otherwise, and I’m loathe to suggest is, but one of those multi-way dresses often used for bridesmaids might work?

This style would be lovely if the colour suits her and you could get it altered to fit. https://www.monsoonlondon.com/au/anne-mesh-maxi-dress-green-54081307.html

That yellow Farm Rio co-ord is gorgeous. Out of my price range but absolutely stunning.

PrinciCrackers · 23/07/2024 06:40

I have big boobs and have always worn separates to weddings. Never found a strapless bra that works. So can’t do halter necks or any strapless dresses. It’s tough. ‘Shapeless’ shift dresses work ok for me as my boobs provide the shape.

Mummyoflittledragon · 23/07/2024 06:55

What about Jolie Moi? Not normally associated with your dd’s age group they’ve recently upped their game. I am not large breasted but I find bust sizes on the cross over dresses are quite ample on me. As they’re stretch (5% elastane) I was thinking perhaps going up a size wouldn’t be noticeable. They don’t have maxi bodycon. But something like this maybe? In stock and can be delivered tomorrow. Don’t buy from Jolie Moi direct though as they can take over a week to come.
