Wedding outfit for reluctant teen

Would love some ideas for my 17 year old daughter to wear to a family wedding. She thinks she needs to wear a dress as the other teen girls will be (including her sister). The others are all wearing pale blue or green maxi fitted bodycon dresses. She has an hourglass figure and it is very difficult to find styles that suit her. Anything that fits her round the waist does not fit her bust or hips. It is this Saturday. She is very reluctant to look or go shopping and I am feeling stuck.
Any ideas would be gratefully received. Thank you

Would something like this work? If not have a look on Quiz and see if anything would, it's a bit more age-appropriate than some of the suggestions.

littleoldme3 · 22/07/2024 20:46

@Bohoboo Would she be better with separates rather than a dress? A nice flowy Maxi length skirt with a fitted top tucked in? You could add a nice belt?

No links to specifics but something along these lines? That way you can get a top that fits her bust properly

I am a 30 G with size 10 hips and waist. I recently went to a wedding and chose a draped cowl neck dress in the end and gave up trying to show off my figure, as it’s impossible to get an a fitted dress off the peg. That’s why I usually wear separates.

I like that idea thank you. She is resisting currently but think I will explore this more.

It's about £20 to have a dress properly tailored if you have time to get that done. Find something she likes and have it fitted to her. Maybe ring a few places and get some guide prices for your area.

I've always been very large of bust including as a worried teenager and properly fitting clothes make all the difference!

ButtSurgery · 22/07/2024 20:56

Oh it's this weekend? Hmm, probably bit late for tailoring, but maybe for the next event! Sorry!

Thighdentitycrisis · 22/07/2024 20:57

I also find shirred bodice dresses with a fuller skirt or a ruched front dress work ok as you can get a bigger size on top and the waist will adjust to fit your torso and hips better

herbygarden · 22/07/2024 21:58

Sounds tough! Would she consider a personal shopper, somewhere like John Lewis, maybe try on loads of options?! I appreciate this might be too daunting though!

minipie · 22/07/2024 22:12

This from JL is a wrap but less matronly than many!

hotandpremeni · 22/07/2024 22:12

Try house of CB.

Not cheap but allows you to select a cup size and then dress. Lots of occasion wear on there and my dd best friend is a similar shape to your dd in both dress and cup size.

minipie · 22/07/2024 22:15

also from JL, so pretty

CaMcC · 22/07/2024 22:25

Does she like prints? One hundred stars have some options that may suit, especially the "gowns" which people usually wear as dressing gowns but could be styled as an actual emergency wrap dress with a belt, a cami underneath and a strategically placed stitch or three to secure groin/ upper leg area (best to do while she's wearing it)

How about a nice jumpsuit that ties at the waist?

This one from Asos is open backed so no bra, but might provide enough support by itself due to the shape and lacing ? It’s very pretty

This is the only nice dress I’ve seen on this thread (apologies I might have missed some)
Have y’all missed the fact she’s a teenager? Half of them are more suitable for Miss Marple Shock

Another vote for separates (I had a breast reduction but before that I was 32H with a size 8 waist, I sympathise! My prom dress at 18 was a disaster that did not fit).

Maybe find a patterned pleated midi skirt & then can be paired with a plain colour bodysuit or top, tucked in with fix the waist. I did used to like Bardot tops (if she can manage a strapless bra and/or not care about flesh straps showing) as they are fairly flattering on a large bust but can still be a fairly high neckline so no cleavage.

or another random suggestion, I have this dress and it looks absolutely banging on big boobs small waist, if she likes the style: https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/4786135413-river-island-midi-striped-dress-with-tie-knot-waist-white-navy-and-gold

Double checked & the one I have is a 10 too, so I think it would fit the bust. It’s also on vinted in a 12 if you were worried about hips (waist tie can def go smaller!)

MaidOfAle · 22/07/2024 23:26

I have no idea why the usual trick of replacing the space between "fuller" and "bust" in that Next link isn't working. Go to next.co.uk and search for "fuller bust".

OneNewUser · 22/07/2024 23:37

I’m sorry but that nobody’s child one would be a disaster - it’s short in the bodice already so on someone who is G cup it would be hanging off her boobs - really not a flattering look 🙃
