Tops for WFH Calls on Camera

In colder weather my default options are solid colour cashmere jumpers. They look smart, comfortable, professional enough for client and colleagues calls, with make up and a little jewellery. Soft jeans on the bottom.

But I am a bit stumped for a warmer weather attire. What to wear on top? T-shirts are too casual, the shirts do not do anything for me sitting down, blouses are blousy (I do love the look of Love and Roses but do not own anything due to being polyester). To office I wear a blazer, but it’s overkill at home.

What does one wear to look polished? Would be grateful for conceptual ideas and specific links.

Polo top

In cotton

Or cashmere. (I daresay cheaper versions are available!)

WhiteCatmas · 18/07/2024 00:16

Nice linen t-shirts from Uniqlo.

Thanks, all. Interesting that we all come back to some owlet of lightweight knit.

I have scoop neck t shirts from Hobbs in about six different colours. Short sleeve and long sleeve. Also wear different necklaces.

GinForBreakfast · 18/07/2024 07:24

@AndYesTheWeeDonkeys that second photo is hideous. Like they are trying to bring back heroin chic.

missmoon · 18/07/2024 07:27

I agree that summer office wear can be quite tricky. I mostly wear light knits (eg linen, cotton), smart polo shirts, or a sleeveless top with a thicker overshirt / jacket.

I have a few from Margaret Howell (on sale at the moment!) and APC. The Fold, Joseph, and Cos also good for these sorts of tops. Maybe also look at Sezanne?

Likesomemorecash · 18/07/2024 07:29

Dresses with a smart looking neckline.

Structured cotton tops.

Or I stick a blazer on over a smart t-shirt and take it off when not on camera.

AndYesTheWeeDonkeys · 18/07/2024 08:00

Why would a £200 top be more uncomfortable than a £39 top, though?

In truth no one remembers what one wears on Zoom / Teams - so presumably we all buy work clothes to suit our own wider working life?

Iamanunsafebuilding · 18/07/2024 08:09

I wear high neck sleeveless vests from M&S in solid colours, only £7.50 each and are perfectly smart enough. Being a bit higher necked makes them look less casual I think

NeedANewOne25 · 18/07/2024 08:10

That is true (in that no one remembers what we wear in online meetings). My wider working life involves outdoors or working with councils, so I guess all our circumstances are different. Some of my old client facing clothes wouldn’t be appropriate.

GinForBreakfast · 18/07/2024 08:10

Tbh I have a wfh "uniform" I don't wear to work in the office. I suit dresses and I wouldn't wear a dress to sit in my little garden shed office.

My personal view is that £200 for a top is insane, but I am obviously in a different income/wealth bracket to that shop's customers.

Summertimer · 18/07/2024 08:18

I have several of these, mostly in better colours than the ones they have now. I have good statement pieces of jewellery to make them look smart.

LoobyDoop2 · 18/07/2024 09:03

Just check how low cut it is. I recently wore a pretty, perfectly respectable dress that I’d usually wear to go out for lunch or something to wfh. Realised on the first call it displayed far more cleavage than I’m comfortable with for work, although I wouldn’t give it a second thought otherwise. Spent the rest of the day artfully propping my chin up with my arm as a cunning way of covering up.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 18/07/2024 11:01

If it's a customer call I wear a plain navy v neck t shirt, if it's internal it's whatever t shirt or hoodie I pulled out of the wardrobe this morning. Bottom half is always jeans or shorts. It's pretty much the same if I go into the office now as we have a smart casual dress code that seems to be getting more and more casual.

Could you link the ones you get please? I find them on the site.

Iamanunsafebuilding · 18/07/2024 11:59

@Qwertys these ones https://www.marksandspencer.com/relaxed-vest-top/p/clp60582627?intid=mobileappppdpshare

I've got black, white, navy and mint green, they are high enough at the front to look professional IMO

That's one of the least flattering photos I think I've ever seen of a model 😳

Ahaha I hadn't scrolled down! They're taking the piss, surely?! The top looks like something you would have picked up in Tammy Girl in the 90s 😄
