For a long time it was a dress (just past knee), jacket and hat as standard for mother of the bride. It is still a classic look. Avoid low cut, too tight or clingy and opt for well tailored. If wearing a hat and if the wedding is formal look into the hat etiquette where other ladies in attendance will wait for you to remove your hat before they do.

This is a good example. Simple, elegant and not showy.

Each to their own! What's your suggestion then?

There are loads of sites where you can find elegant non frumpy outfits.
Coast
Next
Debenhams
Roman
Hope and Ivy
Wolfe and badger
Frock and frill
Everpretty
To name but a few!
The outfit pictured seems to be standard stereo outfit for mother of the bride, but it’s boring and very dated.

GoldFrame · 15/07/2024 22:59

the picture posted is like the olden days. I’m 54.

What’s your usual style @imfromwales ?

And size/shape/colouring?

Putting · 15/07/2024 23:07

I’d probably go for something like this, with a jacket or cover-up if you didn’t want sleeveless.

The dress previously linked to looks to me as though it’s for a much older woman - I can see the Queen wearing something like that, not someone in their early 50s.

Or classic, timeless, and popular

I think these are more age appropriate but special enough to show suitable effort has been made.

Each to their own, it's all subjective, but that outfit is awful.

If it were me looking for an "Mof B" outfit the last place I'd look is anywhere marketed as "MofB" . Actually it wouldn't be the last place- I'd never look there.

If I couldn't think of a brand or a designer I liked ( which isn't the case, if I were me I'd start looking at Erdem or Eponine or Alémais) I would look at Liberty, Harvey Nick's, Brown's, Net-a-Porter, MyTheresa, Coggles, Matches, Harrod's, maybe even Dover Street Market etc, etc, filter for my size and maximum budget. See what comes up- check out brands on the results on the individual websites of each brand.

I'm 65. I would refuse to go to the wedding if I had to wear that outfit (the first one, not your suggestion. Yours wouldn't be my first choice but I could at least leave the house in it)

DisneyHag · 16/07/2024 01:27

What do we wear in UK?

You wear something in a style you love, that feels celebratory and special enough for the occasion.

I’m over 60 - I have no weddings to attend this year but my Evernote app is full of things I’ve noted for future possibilities. Right now I’d probably choose something from:

Cecilie Bahnsen
Alemais
Jil Sander
Egg
The Row

depending on the wedding context, the season, etc. I might find a dress or a trouser suit or a fabulous blouse and trousers. I would never in my life look at any brand that claimed to offer ‘Mother of the Bride’ outfits.

It’s great that we have the option of renting really high fashion options right now - for a fraction of the price of buying. There’s absolutely no excuse for any member of a wedding party to turn up in some drab throwback to the 1970s …

SpuytenDuyvil · 16/07/2024 01:37

Our DS got married in March. I showed my soon-to-be DIL the dresses I was considering before I bought anything. DS didn't care what I wore, but I wanted to make sure that DIL and her mother were happy with what I chose. It worked out well.

Some of these are a joke, I presume. I don't think there's any way you can avoid the hard slog of the actual running around shopping for your outfit, op.
i'd just say think of the two Cs -- you need an outfit that will boost your Confidence and that you can be Comfortable wearing for the duration of what is likely to be a long day.

Oh but dear, if you are over 60 you are a throwback to the 1970s! Just trying to help the op avoid the mutton dressed as lamb look but I did forget she is younger than you...

Yes, as I stated, it's an example of how they traditionally looked. However the main principles of it worked well enough for long enough for many women.

Lostsadandconfused · 16/07/2024 03:02

I'm attending a wedding at the end of the month, I'm the aunt of the bride, aged 55. I'm wearing this dress, with similar shoes, hair, with a headband style headpiece.

Any more clues OP?
Sleeves or not? Neckline? Length? Size?
It’s helpful to know which colours suit you and which you avoid.
Is the wedding very formal or more relaxed?

Something like this perhaps?

So drab! Even the lovely model looks awful in it.

@Commonsenseisnotsocommon mutton dressed as lamb is such a horrible old fashioned term.

@Commonsenseisnotsocommon mutton dressed as lamb is such a horrible old fashioned term.

Yet, unfortunately, it is still very appropriate for some people.

Again, for those at the back of the room, it was an example to demonstrate the principles of an outfit I mentioned used to be adopted.

no clue what some of these posts are about other than verging on rude.
HOBBS is your friend @imfromwales they have an occasion section as well.
there are hobbs dresses available on john lewis as well (often the sale items).
