Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

Well look at that.

Obviously it's not like wearing a corset etc under your dress as they are completely different items.

greyfoxy · 11/07/2024 22:27

Yes always with dresses. Why wouldn't you?

Branster · 11/07/2024 22:29

I've never owned or wore one.
Both my grandmothers did, usually half slip and my mother always did and still does. All 3 elegant and well dressed ladies.
I was never curious about them and nobody encouraged me to try.
A lot of my dresses and skirts are fully lined. I have been known to add lining myself on a few items of clothing if too see-through in sunlight. I don't mind if something is slightly see through unless I am in a work situation.
I really dislike maxi dresses and maxi skirts sold with lining only going 2/3 down, that bottom third looks awful!

Mongrelsrbeautiful · 11/07/2024 22:32

I bought a pack of 2 from next last year, 1 black, one white. I've worn the black under a thin jersey dress. Generally too hot fir me though.

Teenagehorrorbag · 11/07/2024 22:33

I have a couple of different length waist slips - can't say I've worn them for a while but when I was working in a more professional environment and wore dresses they were sometimes needed. Lots of things aren't lined these days.

If I'm on a beach or very casual I worry less.....

But I am 60 - maybe it's an age thing. (I also have a sewing machine.....😊)

I don’t really understand slips. Most of my summer dresses are strappy so I don’t want more straps underneath them, or they’re cut out at the back etc, so a slip wouldn’t work as it would show. I don’t tend to wear dresses in winter but if I do it’s more of a bodycon style and I wear a cardigan. So a slip wouldn’t work there either.

I’m in my forties so not that young but I’m thinking slips only work for old lady style dresses, which I’m not ready for yet!

You can probably get them cheaper at Asda or Primark. Or ebay?

Amazon!

HaveNoIdeaForAName · 11/07/2024 18:14

They are for old ladies.

Not at all

I admit Ive not worn one in a while but when tights were a must wear for work, a slip would stop a skirt from clinging due to static

I do still have a couple of half slips and a full length one - just in case I ever feel the need to wear tights again

But surely 90% of the dresses in the shops for the last 4 years have been "old lady dresses": voluminous floral numbers, worn by every woman over the age of 20.

Darkdiamond · 11/07/2024 18:25

Why are they such an 'old woman' thing though? Nobody sees them and they make such a difference to how well dresses look.

The thought of an extra layer is making me feel too hot. Maybe they’re ‘old lady’ clothes because old ladies have gone past the point of being too hot if the temperate changes by half a degree.

I also don’t seem to get my dress stuck up my bum when I stand but I only wear ginormous pants which fully bridge the gap.

PollyPeachum · 11/07/2024 22:41

Age- 40+ made and bought slips to wear under dresses, especially the button-thru. Can be reassuring under a short skirt as well.

Yoonimum · 11/07/2024 22:45

I'm 66 yrs and I was brought up to wear a slip and did so for decades. Funnily enough, when I went to buy one to go under a knitted dress last year I realised I hadn't worn one for 15-20 years. Something to do with wearing trousers most of the time and dress codes becoming increasingly less formal. But they are great thing when you do have a clingy skirt and shouldn't be shunned!

That's more they don't work with the dresses you wear than you not understanding them, surely?

olivehater · 11/07/2024 22:49

No but most people wear cycle shorts under dresses these days.

muffinmum91 · 11/07/2024 22:50

They are a must for dresses when you're wearing tights to stop the static cling! Highly recommend! But if I'm not wearing tights I never wear a slip. They are very fuddy duddy and an unnecessary layer.

ItsAlrightDarling · 11/07/2024 22:51

Can someone post a link to the sort of dress they’d wear a slip under, please? I’m thinking of the dresses I own and can’t envisage how it would work, so really interested to see if I’m missing something! I’m really open to the idea of them if they make dresses look better.

100% yes! Cycle shorts or chub rub shorts. This is my go -to for under dresses in summer.

Stops chafing of the legs and gently smooths out lumps and bumps under a dress. Love them!

ItsAlrightDarling · 11/07/2024 22:52

I’ve never worn anything underneath a dress, other than a bra.

I'm late 30s and I'd say most women that I know who are my age wear cycle shorts under skirts and dresses in the summer, yes.

Humptysegg · 11/07/2024 22:53

I’d imagine a synthetic material slip under a cotton summer dress would make a cool dress hot, sticky and sweaty?

Same age and don’t know anyone who does this! Or at least they’ve never mentioned it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm 65 and haven't worn a slip for decades.

None of my dresses or skirts are see through enough to embarrass me, and they all hang fine (I only wear natural fabrics, so nothing is clingy). It's too hot in summer (not in UK) to want to wear an extra layer.

Thin or see through material is just one reason to wear them. I wear a slip with all unlined dresses. I don't think I've got any that are see through. It makes everything hang better.

In winter it adds an extra layer for warmth and in summer it actually has a cooling effect. The slips themselves are material that doesn't cling and the slip prevents the dress clinging.

And I'm sure that keeping a slip between your skin and the material of the dress is ibetter for keeping the dress itself in good condition.
