Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

@elQuintoConyo

I make my own too. I wear them mainly in winter out of brushed cotton for warmth. I also make and wear bloomers.

Serious old lady stuff here.

And toasty pins.

FourFiveSix · 11/07/2024 21:54

My mum has them, had to persuade her to use a half slip one summer to reduce the layers of nylon she was suffering in. 😀
I had them years ago.
I got out of the habit, wearing more trousers I guess

ForGreyKoala · 11/07/2024 21:57

I'm 65 and haven't worn a slip for decades.

None of my dresses or skirts are see through enough to embarrass me, and they all hang fine (I only wear natural fabrics, so nothing is clingy). It's too hot in summer (not in UK) to want to wear an extra layer.

TropicalRain · 11/07/2024 21:57

I bought a Uniqlo dress and it came with a slip! I feel more put together when wearing one.

Deadringer · 11/07/2024 21:59

I am 60 and I have never worn a slip, tbf I rarely wear dresses or skirts though.

mondaytosunday · 11/07/2024 21:59

I just bought a culotte style slip for wearing on holiday- prevents the dreaded chub rub plus makes my maxi dresses hang better. Before that it's been decades since I wore one!

If your underskirt was showing under your dress or skirt we used to say Charlie's dead!

Here we used to say It's snowing down south!

CrushingOnRubies · 11/07/2024 22:01

I have one which I wear with couple of skirts. Only because they aren't lined and are a bit see through in the wrong light

Octavia64 · 11/07/2024 22:01

I'm 47.

Never worn one.

I only wear dresses in hot weather and I really don't see the point of wearing effectively two dresses one above the other.

If I'm wearing a dress it's because either it's bloody hot or I'm going swimming and there's a swimsuit under it not a slip.

Why do you need two dresses to wear a dress? You don't need two t shirts to wear a t shirt.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 11/07/2024 22:03

I wear them. The 50 and 60 year old secretaries at work think its hilarious and call me an old lady (I'm early 40s) but I totally agree they make a dress hang better.

However I'm struggling more and more to buy them. I have white and black ones in short and longer lengths. I also wear camisoles under shirts and sometimes tops if I'm wearing trousers.

InTheWindow · 11/07/2024 22:05

Often wear one, make clothes hang better and a nice extra layer for warmth. Useful this summer!

SparrowFeet · 11/07/2024 22:06

I wear slips under dresses if it isn't lined. I don't consider it an age thing, more that I don't really want to wear a see through dress. I have a few different lengths from M&S and I have to say I look a little racy in my black one...

BlueEyedLeucy · 11/07/2024 22:08

I wear a slip with any skirt and some dresses. They make things sit nicer, stops skirts clinging to your legs and general makes everything more comfy. Easy to buy online or in M&S. Just ordered another one to wear under my wedding dress. They are so light weight, they don't add any bulk. If anything, they make you look better cause they smooth out those little ins and outs that may otherwise show through the dress!

Happyearlyretirement · 11/07/2024 22:11

I’m wearing one right now under my linen white dress. Just gives you extra confidence that your new nickers aren’t on show.

GloriaSmornin · 11/07/2024 22:13

Love a waist slip. Never wear the full slip though.

CindyBirdsong · 11/07/2024 22:13

I have a long white one for under summer maxi dresses and a long black one for winter, both from m&s, really comfy and feel so nice against skin.

Happyearlyretirement · 11/07/2024 22:14

Knickers!!

libertybonds · 11/07/2024 22:15

I do not, but this thread may be inspiring me to be one of the many buying from M&S this evening 😅

Gowlett · 11/07/2024 22:16

I love slips. I’ve kept all the ones I’ve bought over the years. Some are from the lingerie department, some came with the dress, others are fine cotton or silk summer dresses. I have loads of chiffon dresses, silk dresses. They’d be see-thru without a slip?

KathrynWheel · 11/07/2024 22:16

WhereAreWeNow · 11/07/2024 18:28

You can probably get them cheaper at Asda or Primark. Or ebay?

Bon marche ( in store or online)

Conniebygaslight · 11/07/2024 22:16

No, I’d forgotten all about them tbh but you’ve definitely planted a seed…..

FangsForTheMemory · 11/07/2024 22:16

OP, a lot of women don't wear knickers any more, in any practical sense. Don't even get me started on the tight miniskirts that show half an arse cheek off.

AxolotlEars · 11/07/2024 22:19

I don't wear a slip....couldn't get on with the proportions ....but I do wear a petticoat 🙂

The M & S ones are great under dresses and double up as night dresses in hot weather. I have to size up!

I'm early 50s and have a couple of dresses that need a slip underneath to make them hang right when I have tights on. Mostly worn in the winter. But in summer double up as nightwear! I also use a skirt one with an unlined suit skirt. Had them for over 20 years I think.
