Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

No but most people wear cycle shorts under dresses these days.

Do they ? That seems utterly daft.

Suspect this thread is causing an uptick in sales of skips at Marks and Spencer. '46 sold in 48hrs'

They make me feel hot thinking about wearing one. And anything that adds bulk is likely to make you look fatter, not better surely?

They don't add bulk because they are very thin but more importantly your clothes hang better so they are slimming.

Yes, I have several of different lengths & colours & have always worn them. So many clothese are poor quality, thin fabric & look better with a slip.

Can someone post a link to the sort of dress they’d wear a slip under, please? I’m thinking of the dresses I own and can’t envisage how it would work, so really interested to see if I’m missing something! I’m really open to the idea of them if they make dresses look better.

What is so difficult to understand?

I wear a slip with every dress I own unless it's got a lining.

Lifeomars · 11/07/2024 23:07

They do make dresses hang better and they keep you warm in winter. I have a couple of slips (got them on Amazon) which I wear with certain dresses that look better for having a layer underneath. I also have some dresses that are half lined and they do look good and hang well.

butterfly0404 · 11/07/2024 23:08

I have 2, the sort with straps that go under slightly sheer dresses. They really make a difference to the look of a dress.
I wear them more in the winter under Jumper type dresses and it feels much nicer and stops the dresses bunching up around the hips.

I’d imagine a synthetic material slip under a cotton summer dress would make a cool dress hot, sticky and sweaty?

Completely the opposite.

They are for old ladies.

Ageist much! I don't know any old ladies who wear slips and I'm 76.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 11/07/2024 23:10

It's just never occurred to me to wear one. If a garment was too see through or scratchy or didn't sit nicely on my body I wouldn't buy it.

echt · 11/07/2024 23:11

I wear slips under dresses that are a bit see-through. It's a very ugly look to see legs through dresses, and no it's not just because I'm nearly 70, it just looks naff.

blackcherryconserve · 11/07/2024 23:11

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/07/2024 23:09

Completely the opposite.

If you want to keep cool by wearing cotton there's no need to wear a synthetic slip! Women in hot countries don't wear them.

Toooldforthis36 · 11/07/2024 23:12

Never worn, aren’t they too hot?

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/07/2024 23:12

And you authoritatively speak for every woman do you?

ProvincialLady2024 · 11/07/2024 23:13

I wear them - they definitely make unlined dresses look more elegant and expensive

cavernclub · 11/07/2024 23:14

I wear a slip if a skirt or dress doesn't have a lining. It stops lightweight dresses and skirts going see through and makes everything hang better

blackcherryconserve · 11/07/2024 23:16

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/07/2024 23:12

Of course not! No more than you do.

Newmum738 · 11/07/2024 23:17

I wear them. It makes skirts less see through and stops them sticking to my tights.

CharlotteRumpling · 11/07/2024 23:17

I have tried cycling shorts and find them uncomfortable and hot. I don't have thigh chafing so I would wear them mostly to make thin dresses hang better and be less see through.

Maybe I am picking the wrong shorts? My slips are half slips and very thin cotton, so don't add bulk or heat.

blueshoes · 11/07/2024 23:17

It blows my mind to wear a dress under a dress.

I must check it out.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/07/2024 23:19

I just love the way that all the posters who don't wear slips/ have never heard of them/ can't imagine wearing them are so authoritatively spouting complete garbage about what wearing a slip would be like.

For the hard of thinking - they don't add bulk; in hot weather they actually have a cooling effect as clothes don't stick; in cold weather they add a very thin layer to add warmth; every dress material will hang and move better with a slip.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/07/2024 23:21

blackcherryconserve · 11/07/2024 23:16

No but I do and always have worn slips under dresses so unlike several posters on here can actually speak authoritatively about that. There's some real nonsense on this thread.

All you naysayers, give slips a chance! Try one like this under a clingy knitted dress or a flimsy viscose dress and you'll see the difference. You can also wear it as a nightie. www.marksandspencer.com/flexifit-cool-comfort-full-slip/p/clp60606716?color=WHITE&prevPage=srp#intid=pid_pg1pip48g2r1c1

I've got that in two colours - they make dresses hang so much better. Look good as a nightie and feel lovely to wear too.

Imustgoforarun · 11/07/2024 23:27

I wear one with clingy dresses. Looks so much better as don’t see lumps and bumps, dress creases less and it’s not see through.

hellywelly3 · 11/07/2024 23:30

I just thought they were a modesty garment my granny used to wear. I guess a lot probably think the same. I didn’t know it made clothing fit better

Onewayanoth · 11/07/2024 23:41

I wore a skirt and shirt today, with a full length slip under. Everything hung much better, the shirt tucked in nicely. I don’t find the slip makes me too hot - I think they are all from M&S the ones I have, but will check out the next cotton ones too. I also often wear a silk cami under shirts if I wear with trousers.
