Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

Love a slip! I wear them all the time under all sorts of dresses and skirts. Wore one today, they make everything hang better. I have lots of different lengths and a skirt one. I’m not (quite) an old lady, mid 40s! But I’ve always worn one :)

suburburban · 11/07/2024 21:16

Yes, wore one tonight abroad as skirt was slightly see through- its cotton

Onewayanoth · 11/07/2024 21:16

Ironically the one skirt I don’t wear one under is the see-through lace one for festivals!

ThreeFeetTall · 11/07/2024 21:18

I wear them! Would prefer to be able to afford properly lined summer dresses but until then it's a slip.

MonsteraMama · 11/07/2024 21:20

I've got slips and petticoats and I'm 33 and I don't care if people think it's "old lady" my dresses hang beautifully and swish perfectly and I feel like a princess so.... Nyah!

LiterallyOnFire · 11/07/2024 21:27

They're suddenly much easier to find in the shops. I think they're having a renaissance.

They used to have them for under cullottes - they were a sight. Does no one else refer to them as an underskirt - that's what they were called in our house.

They still do - again from M&S - perfect for under wide leg trousers, no sticking to you when you stand up! Also a big fan of slips under dresses and skirts - as PP have said they make your clothes hang and move much better.

FantasticFanny · 11/07/2024 21:33

Always wear them here, unless it is 30+ degrees. I buy them from Here.

ItsAlrightDarling · 11/07/2024 21:33

Wouldn’t you need to own loads of different lengths for different length dresses? And do you have different style slips for, say, a bodycon dress compared to a skater style dress? I’m interested in the idea but can’t see how it works in practice unless you own loads of them for all the different length/style of skirts and dresses that you own,

EvelynBeatrice · 11/07/2024 21:34

The pure cotton slips that are stocked by Next in a pack of one black one white are very useful on hot holidays. Good under stuff so white dress not see through and keeps dresses from needing washed longer as you can just wash through the cotton slip. They're also good as nighties.

EvelynBeatrice · 11/07/2024 21:37

And my older teen loves the M&S black silk with lace number which makes her feel good when worn under boring dress or as nightie if she feels like being fancy instead of wearing her pjs! 😁

Well, they don’t need to exactly match the length - I’ll wear a knee length slip under a maxi skirt because if I’m trying to stop it going see through I don’t care about the bottom part of my legs showing! Mini skirts tend to be quite tight or stretchy so I don’t feel I need one under those generally, although I do have one bodycon style shapewearish slip I do wear occasionally. The slip is next to the body, not the dress, if that makes sense so I doesn’t have to be the same shape as the dress.

Yes that's the other thing- it's suddenly possible to buy cotton full and half slips. I've worn them for years because I have quite vintage- tinged taste and I found them practical, but for about two decades they were almost exclusively synthetic - easily being able to get cotton ones is an improvement in the past 12 months.

Maybe it's a backlash against the arse-crack leggings and similar styles that women suddenly want good fit and protection from cling.

I’m feeling hot just thinking about it! 😆🥵

One light, one dark and one longer cotton one is a good enough start. But yes, I have about two dozen now.

martinemartine · 11/07/2024 21:43

I think it is because so many dresses and skirts are so poorly made these days. 20 to 30 years ago slips were out of fashion as most dresses and skirts did not need them. Places like marks and spencers lined their skirts and dresses and even cheap places had better quality clothes.

LiterallyOnFire · 11/07/2024 21:44

There's probably something in that @martinemartine

VerityBridge · 11/07/2024 21:44

I would never wear an unlined dress or skirt without one. Makes such a difference to the line and hang of a dress.

I'm in my 40s. My 18yo daughter uses them too. They just make clothes look better.

ilovepixie · 11/07/2024 21:45

If your underskirt was showing under your dress or skirt we used to say Charlie's dead!

motleymop · 11/07/2024 21:45

I have never considered it, but now I feel like I've been missing out all these years. I had no idea - I'm sold, OP!

Needapadlockonmyfridge · 11/07/2024 21:47

I often do.
M&S is my go-to
Never considered myself to be an "old lady" but there you go....!

myslippersarepink · 11/07/2024 21:48

I have a white and a black petticoat (is that just a full length slip?!) and a black slip. The full ones I wear with dresses for work so they are not see through. Wouldn't feel comfy without. I'm early 50's!

otnot · 11/07/2024 21:48

I suspect many women aren't aware of their existence - or have memories from childhood of being forced into a ridiculous, hot garment that wasn't even on show by a well-meaning mother insisting that your dress wouldn't hang right without one. After a good couple of decades belligerently avoiding them, I have now grudgingly conceded that indeed they do make dresses hang right and wear them when necessary.

MumoftwoGranofone · 11/07/2024 21:49

The M & S ones are great under dresses and double up as night dresses in hot weather. I have to size up!

Oh god, I remember that from when I was a child.
