Does nobody wear slip any more?

Darkdiamond · 11/07/2024 18:12

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

I can definitely see how they would work with these dresses. They’re not the sort of thing I wear. I’ve looked in my wardrobe and I only have a couple of summer dresses I could actually wear a slip under so I don’t think I’m a candidate.

Why are you so focused on summer dresses?

I wear slips under winter dresses too?

It's not warm enough in the UK for me to exclusively wear backless dresses with plunging necklines!

GoldFrame · 13/07/2024 09:08

They are really good under jumper dresses

This thread is an eye opener. I'm amazed that so many women have never even heard of a slip while some of us wear them all the time.

As for them being 'old lady' underwear, I remember a scene in the film Volver when Penelope Cruz takes off her dress and is wearing a black slip and it looks insanely sexy. Nothing 'old lady' about a slinky little black mini dress under your clothes.

Quite!

Titillation is what a glimpse of your slip is. A bit of forbidden lace, a hint of black nylon, a slinky minidress under your clothes is alluring, not just sexy and it says sophistication.

The slip is also meant to be seen in a modesty fail like walking up stairs or the wind blowing up your skirt. In such situations I keep walking, no attempt to pat my skirt/dress down count yourself fortunate to see my pretty slip (I love lace ones especially)

I blame the 1980's for the lack of subtly in dress and the complete ignorance in foundation wear and how they affect how clothes fit (including corsets). We just buy clothes and give no thought to how they might be improved also clothes that appear not to suit you can look great with the right underwear!

Those saying grannies wore them, they wore them because they also wore them as young people.

As for being unsexy see my point above but they have many options now, including backless and netted sheer ones which help with the dress hanging better if that's all you want, but are useless for see through dress but cannot be called unsexy by any means!

Edited

Because it’s summer I suppose! I also don’t have many winter dresses because I struggle to find nice ones.

I’ve just actually tried on one of my mum’s slips under the dress I’m wearing. It’s a black Zara bodycon maxi dress with a slit. The slip underneath definitely did make it sit better and it felt comfy.

However, the dress has a slightly racer-style back and the slip was clearly showing under the armpits and sides, so there’s no way I could wear it, even if it was black. It looked awful.

This is my point: slips might make dresses fall better but IME lots of dresses just don’t work with something underneath.

LightSpeeds · 13/07/2024 09:37

Yes, I've got some and wear them when necessary. Mine are the dress-style (as opposed to skirt).

(I have some clothes with sewn-in ones.)

I need some skirt ones but they're not ubiquitous so I haven't got any yet.

Maybe I should make my own...

I've been looking for one with a deep V for a while. If anyone has seen plunging v neck ones for sale, please let me know where.

I’ve got several M&S ones that are reversible - V neck one side and curved thin lace edge on the other. Well, I assume they’re reversible because I do 😁

I am firmly #TeamSlip. I wear mostly dresses and skirts and always, always with a slip. As wise PPs have said, everything sits smoother over a slip, you don’t get get static or cling, and when the wind blows your thin cotton frock against your front you don’t show the outline of your fanjo. I’m surprised M&S doesn’t come out with that marketing, tbh.

A mini half slip would work in this instance.

No, very tight body con dresses with cut outs or backless won't work with full slips although even those might benefit from a half slip. However I don't know about you but very tight body con etc are hardly every day wear.

Rainyblue · 13/07/2024 10:14

Droolylabradors · 13/07/2024 08:41

@Rainyblue you need safety pins in the hem, it takes away the static. I got that tip off mumsnet in 2012 before my brothers wedding 😁

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

I’ve tried that, but the skirts I have an issue with have thin hems and thin fabric and I couldn’t see how it would work without showing at the bottom / damaging the hem.

The thing I have found that works is rubbing a bit of body lotion on to my legs after I have put my tights on. But that is a bit weird to do!

Droolylabradors · 13/07/2024 10:24

@Rainyblue you put them in sideways. Along the hem. I use a tiny safety pin (or pins) horizontally, it's never shown for me.

But I see your point!

Droolylabradors · 13/07/2024 10:25

Apparently hairspray works too.

BigAnne · 13/07/2024 10:34

@Darkdiamond I always wear one if dress/skirt is unlined therefore no VPL. My daughters think it's amusing for some reason. IMO it gives a much better overall appearance and no clinging.

LiterallyOnFire · 12/07/2024 19:45

No.

It's most dresses.

We get it. You want to take the piss. Pretend we are all edwardians and smell of cabbage, but it's getting rather tired now.

Your imagination can't be that dire.

I wear lots of cotton, denim, linen etc natural fabrics day to day eg Cos shirt dresses, I love the crisp cotton and linen fabrics - they definitely look, hang and move better with my M&S slip and throughout the year, like other posters I actually find it more comfortable in the heat to wear a slip as my clothes move more freely and I stay cooler. Each to their own.

Would they stop one riding up when worn with tights?

Yep. It's magic.

JamSlags · 13/07/2024 15:52

@BirthdayRainbow they do for me. A slip under a jumper dress smooths it out and stops drag, and mine don’t ride up when I’m wearing tights and boots.

BirthdayRainbow · 13/07/2024 15:58

Thank you@LiterallyOnFire and @JamSlags .

WhereAreWeNow · 13/07/2024 16:22

I think I wear mine most often in the winter. I've got a couple of clingy merino dresses I wear to work and they look so much smoother with a slip underneath.

It is the fault of this thread that I have been looking at all the women in skirts and dresses I've passed today, thinking, "you could do with a slip..." Even a painting in Tate Britain, "she has nothing under her skirt!" (Which was a bit of a surprise for an 18thcentury portrait.)

I never used to think about any of this.

This silk one from Brora is beautiful.

@Darkdiamond me too. Cos is my go to for a lot of work stuff, the cord shirt dresses don’t stick to opaque tights with a slip.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle it is lovely but 🙈 dry clean only.
