Does nobody wear slip any more?

Darkdiamond · 11/07/2024 18:12

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

I’ve just been to M&S and bought some dress and skirt slips. Couldn’t find any culotte ones. I’m wearing a skirt tomorrow so will report back on my first slip as undergarment experience!

Can someone show me what kind of dresses and skirts we’re talking about?

Presumably all have sleeves? And aren’t tight?

I would appreciate photos of all these dresses people are wearing that can accommodate a slip.

Are we talking about the ‘uniform’ of floral maxi dress and white trainers? 😖

No.

It's most dresses.

We get it. You want to take the piss. Pretend we are all edwardians and smell of cabbage, but it's getting rather tired now.

Your imagination can't be that dire.

Most slips have tiny straps and some end mid thigh

So virtually all accommodate a slip.

I think it's only backless or strapless dresses that wouldn't

PrincessMee · 12/07/2024 19:56

This has got to be one of the craziest threads I have ever read 😂 people have no idea what a slip is 🤷‍♀️ . I googled a couple of possibly popular outlets and yes they have slips.

A slip is just not something I've ever imagined wearing. I might give it a go if they're as miraculous as people say!

The outfit I showed up thread. And these three are the first three Google hits for different styles which would benefit from slips. Boden model could definitely use one tbh, the other two look fine in their static / airbrushed pictures .

Why would trainers need a slip? That makes no sense.

I wear different types of midi or knee length dresses. My dresses all have sleeves but if you wear a mini half slip, it has no bearing on the top part of the dress (so you don't need sleeves) and, depending on the fit, can be worn with a tight dress. I have a mini one which is quite figure hugging and would go under a tight, strapless dress no problem.

I am guessing that much of this is to do with the fact that many women do not wear dresses or skirts now.

Many women are wearing dresses and skirts with no buffer zone 'tween knickers and dress, which can be very obvious.

Yes you're right of course that you can lengthen the straps until it sits very low on your breasts. Still wouldn't quite work for a very low V neck - I've got older editions with a v neckline for that.

I've been looking for one with a deep V for a while. If anyone has seen plunging v neck ones for sale, please let me know where.

BirthdayRainbow · 12/07/2024 20:45

This thread has reminded me I have one in my drawer. I bought it as a dress I used to have had a V low neck line and I didn't want to show so much. I'll start wearing it under my other dresses and see how I get on.

I had to wear a petticoat when younger in case the skirt was see through and yes, Charlie was dead if it dropped below the skirt hem line.

Why are they such an 'old woman' thing though? Nobody sees them and they make such a difference to how well dresses look.

How do they make a difference. I've never worn one. They are thin yes? How do they change the way a dress hangs?

LiterallyOnFire · 12/07/2024 22:18

They stop static and cling. Even more dramatically, they stop that thing where the wind blows the fabric against you and you get full camel toe.

They're very thin and often silky. Clingy dresses hang better because of the way the dress skims over the slip rather than clinging to the body.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/07/2024 00:29

They are essentially a lining for dresses and skirts that are unlined.

I got some in the Debenhams closing down sale, they were reduced from £20 to £1, in beige and white and black.

They are handy for see through dresses.

That is the steal of the century! I would have been so pleased not having to buy any more for years. I don't know why I never think to top up on the foundations when these mega sale events happen.

BirthdayRainbow · 13/07/2024 07:27

Probably seen by some as old lady wear as they are the women who wore them when they were younger but you weren't aware.

Ladyslip · 13/07/2024 07:54

Slips are great for skirts and dresses that are too see through. I currently need one for a lovely full length dress I bought that is almost completely transparent in the sun!
I’m mid life, not old.

Rainyblue · 13/07/2024 07:58

I have some slips from M&S that I wear under certain dresses, especially under button-front dresses (for obvious reasons), and under some of my dresses that can otherwise cling too much. They do make clothes hang better.

I would like to find an anti-static one though as they don’t solve the problem of certain skirts sticking to my legs due to static….

Droolylabradors · 13/07/2024 08:41

@Rainyblue you need safety pins in the hem, it takes away the static. I got that tip off mumsnet in 2012 before my brothers wedding 😁

I only bought one of each but should be enough as don’t use them often.

With foundation, I’d worry that they start to get orangey after a while, as I don’t wear it daily. But yes, I would stock up on a really good one.

I can definitely see how they would work with these dresses. They’re not the sort of thing I wear. I’ve looked in my wardrobe and I only have a couple of summer dresses I could actually wear a slip under so I don’t think I’m a candidate.
