Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

The comments about slips being for old ladies are amusing. If you don't want your clothes to sit better, bumps to be smoothed and your silhouette to be more sleek, leave it to us old hags. You young 'uns stick to your vpl, lumpy wobbles showing through and bunched up material clinging to you. No odds to us!

I'm really not getting the 'extra layer' and 'size up' comments. It's not an inflatable Michelin Man suit. It's slinky, cool material which I have worn under dresses for most of my adult life, including a few years living in the Middle East where Summers reached well over 40 degrees.

I wear them with unlined or potentially see through dresses. Did feel I was channelling my late mother though...

OneNewUser · 12/07/2024 14:29

I don’t wear them and can’t really see myself wanting to - I run hot and don’t really buy that an extra layer will not make me warmer! Don’t seem to have huge problems with dresses/skirts clinging but perhaps other people notice them more.

The comment that it’s not classy if you can see legs through a maxi dress did amuse me though - horror! Woman has legs! 😂

Baffled by folk saying that haven't seen them for years.Literally in any M&S
https://www.marksandspencer.com/l/lingerie/slips

And I appreciate that you may not have been in the M&S lingerie department, but it does kind of indicate that it's not a niche product

I think some women wear those as nightwear though.

GoldFrame · 12/07/2024 15:00

I find it actually cooler with a slip on as it stops the clinging

lifeisahamsterwheel · 12/07/2024 15:07

Funny enough I went on a slip afew weeks ago really struggled. Yes M&S had them but packs of two including a black one I wanted white or nude. None in good old Primark eventually found some in Matalan of all places not somewhere I shop. It's been great making my see through dresses look more expensive and more work friendly and also keeps me warmer as the weather been so rubbish in the UK. I'm going to invest in Afew more.

Zanatdy · 12/07/2024 15:11

I remember having some as a child, but never worn one in my adult life, never seen any for sale either

SoozyWoozy5 · 12/07/2024 15:28

I am the same, never wear anything unlined without a slip, but we are in the minority! I hate seeing bulges/underwear lines and tights seams.. happy to be old fashioned on this front

GoldFrame · 12/07/2024 15:34

John Lewis has black and nude ones. I’ve just restocked. Usually have the M&S ones

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/07/2024 15:36

This thread is going to end up in classics for sure... full of posts from women who don't know what they are - or wouldn't wear one - or have never seen them for sale anywhere - or wouldn't want one if they could find one.

I think there is some blindness going on here - and not just any blindness but, M&S blindness! Grin

They're not even the only store that sells them...

There's no reason why a full slip couldn't be worn with the white dress or half slips with the other 2. I would wear slips with those.

All the slips people are linking to in M&S would be way too long for these dresses. And too high on the neckline.

Wantitalltogoaway · 12/07/2024 15:49

Does anyone else HATE the way Mumsnet turns a brand name into a link?? 😡

The M&S ones come in several different lengths including quite short, eg as per photo, but you're right that they don't normally work well with deep necklines, or cut-outs of course.

I think the dresses you've pictured wouldn't ever need slips, because they're not form-fitting, or clingy artificial fabrics/jersey. Those are the two big motivators.

The Markies slips come in various lenghts. They have adjustable spaghetti straps and can be worn with low necklines. They won't work with cut outs.

I have almost no dresses which aren't cotton, linen, tencel, wool or silk and wear slips with all unlined dresses.

To be honest - I can't imagine wanting to wear anything lower cut than the M&S slips are on me, they really are quite low cut.

I kinda view it as a bonus that they provide a bit of extra coverage if a dress is very low cut - colour coordinating, I think it looks fine

Yes you're right of course that you can lengthen the straps until it sits very low on your breasts. Still wouldn't quite work for a very low V neck - I've got older editions with a v neckline for that.

HiGunny · 12/07/2024 16:33

I always thought slips were for old ladies until a few years ago. After searching for ages for a dress for an event the only one I liked was fill of static and clung to my body. I tried one of the M and S slips underneath and it sat perfectly. Since then I pop on a slip if a dress is a bit see through or if I want a bit of extra warmth.

Can't understand people saying they've never seen them in shops... literally every department store and lingerie shop where I live sells them.

tillyandmilly · 12/07/2024 17:00

Yes my sister wears one under white skirts you can get them from Amazon

Imustgoforarun · 12/07/2024 17:14

Thinking that slips are for old people explains why so many dresses look awful - clingy, see through, lumpy. Compare to the well dressed ladies in the 60s.

Suspect this thread is causing an uptick in sales of skips at Marks and Spencer. '46 sold in 48hrs'

They make me feel hot thinking about wearing one. And anything that adds bulk is likely to make you look fatter, not better surely?

No, they are thin and stop dresses and skirts clinging so they make you look slimmer not fatter. I have always worn them, they make dresses warmer in the Winter but definitely make most dresses more flattering. I have the M&S ones and I like them, especially the different lengths, but my old favourites are more fitted silk ones as I am quite busty and a fitted shape works better on me. I am not young but my 19 year old wears them too, when dresses are transparent or too clingy.

GoldFrame · 12/07/2024 17:58

The marks ones have a different neckline front and back so you can turn them.

ninjaTurtleBurger · 12/07/2024 19:03

HAHA

Weirdly I think the husbands prefer something comfy and 'old lady' if you will. Also if you look I think slip are more common for young woman than you think, you just have to look at one a little less conventional.

But on other note I think you should wear what you want any way !!! One Life !!!

mustwashmycurtains · 12/07/2024 19:23

I'm (only) in my forties and wear slips loads. They are really useful for making low cut dresses office appropriate, for stopping all the modern synthetic fabric dresses sticking, and for hiding VPL. Also protect your modesty when hit by weird random windtunnels that fly your dress up or open (this is actually a common thing in the city and on the tube, I promise).

I have those M&S ones in different lengths. The straps are adjustable so you can make them so low cut that they actually sit under your boobs, should you want to keep them out of the way of a particular neckline. And they last literally YEARS, and are totally worth it over cheaper options.

Also, for those worried about feeling hotter - I hate being too hot and generally want as little on in summer as possible. These really do somehow make me feel more cool and comfortable. It's a mystery.

YorkshireTeaBiscuits · 12/07/2024 19:44

I always wear slips under skirts and dresses so they're less transparent. M&S do the best ones in different lengths.

Wantitalltogoaway · 12/07/2024 19:44

Can someone show me what kind of dresses and skirts we’re talking about?

Presumably all have sleeves? And aren’t tight?

I would appreciate photos of all these dresses people are wearing that can accommodate a slip.

Are we talking about the ‘uniform’ of floral maxi dress and white trainers? 😖
