Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

But surely 90% of the dresses in the shops for the last 4 years have been "old lady dresses": voluminous floral numbers, worn by every woman over the age of 20.

Not me!

Wantitalltogoaway · 12/07/2024 12:21

Here are some of the dresses I own for summer (or v similar). A slip wouldn’t work with any of them.

They surely only work with sleeved, longish, not-too-tight, not-too-low dresses?

I have several slips and always wear one with a dress, the clothes just look so much better especially if it's not lined.

I actually have 2 shapewear slips from M&S that act like Spanx pants but because they are like a dress you don't get the overspill at the waistband or the rolling down feeling. Even if you hate the idea of a slip I'd definitely recommend one of these as they have made me look presentable in many a dress. https://www.marksandspencer.com/firm-control-sheer-shaping-full-slip/p/clp60285048?intid=mobileappppdpshare

Perhaps this is strange but I've never heard of a 'slip' in my life !!!

guineverehadgreeneyes · 12/07/2024 12:29

I'm old enough to remember girls at school saying "Charley's dead" if your petticoat was hanging lower than the hem of your school skirt. Don't wear slips now as I live in jeans but I still keep a half slip for wearing under an unlined black skirt that is only worn for funerals.

I'm also old enough to have worn Liberty bodices in the 50s.

You've never heard of a slip dress?

For me, a slip is the full length dress that does under a dress, the ones that only go under the bottom half are an underskirt. I prefer the dress ones, because the skirts drop below your hem resulting in "Charlie's dead". They're also smoother around the waist.

Well it depends on the slip - most of mine are quite low cut and I have some that are mid thigh length for shorter dresses. Obviously wouldn't work for any dresses which are backless or have holes in the back but of the three you linked to, I would/could wear a slip with two of them

We only called them "petticoats" when I was growing up. But by my teens, they were called "slips" and "half slips". We also had bra slips, with a built in bra in the late 60s.

Meanwhile33 · 12/07/2024 12:33

I forgot all about slips, but do have a viscose pleated skirt that would hang better with a slip under it. Thanks for the reminder!

I really think that some of the posters fretting about slips that they've never worn, never wanted or need to wear before, really can't fathom what the garment is that the rest of us (who wear them) are talking about? Or they have a view based on foundation underwear, perhaps?

I wear the full length one but not long, just above knee length on me. M&S cool comfort. I have large breasts and have never struggled to get these on, nor have to size up or have them bulky. These slips aren't bulky, they're slippery and cool. Wash really well and last forever. I'm obviously only talking about that brand but I've tried others and not liked them as much.

I can see that if you haven't worn them and don't see the need then they're of little interest to you but the 'old lady' comments are from thick-wits and there's absolutely no excuse for them.

The "old lady" comments are tedious. I wonder if the people making them realise just how thick - witted it makes them appear?

Same with the "I don't know anyone who wears them" comments. I haven't the faintest idea what underwear other women wear.

GoldFrame · 12/07/2024 12:35

I always wear one under a tight dress. Smooths out underwear lines etc.

MyRubyFinch · 12/07/2024 12:36

No I haven't, maybe that's strange!!!

It is tedious, your right. Seems to be the last bastion of comment that will not get you deleted too. Ageist nonsense too. I've been wearing these slips since I was in my 20s, have always loved them but, each to their own.

I too have no idea - or wish to know - about what underwear other women are wearing unless I see a recommendation for a certain thing.

That dress probably doesn't need one but if wanted you could get a waist one.

Cantonet · 12/07/2024 12:44

I do.
I've worn the M&S cotton waist slips for years under my summer skirts/dresses.
I've also just recently added a couple of Hanro ultralight full length slips in the most lovely feeling cotton for wear under lightweight summer dresses & kaftans.

Giggorata · 12/07/2024 10:14

I'm old, dunno about being a lady. I have a few different kinds, frothy, maxi midi, full petticoats, etc.
They stop dresses being see through and riding up or clinging. They hang better and smooth out your silhouette.
For my thin cotton and linen hippy maxi dresses, I have bought a number of thin cotton sari underskirts, in wonderful jewel colours and just inserted some elastic instead of tying them.

@Giggorata Sari underskirts sound like a good idea : where did you get them from?

There's no reason why a full slip couldn't be worn with the white dress or half slips with the other 2. I would wear slips with those.

You are right about this. The casual ageism and derogatory remarks about older women are really disappointing. Believe it or not there is nothing negative about being old.

No, in fact our clothes hang better our silhouette is smoother and our skirts appear less flimsy/better quality 🤣

suburburban · 12/07/2024 13:10

I like the breathable full slips from Ma&S and often wear them with a skirt and top or dress. Extra layer

suburburban · 12/07/2024 13:12

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe

Likewise, I have various length slips, extra security

EBearhug · 12/07/2024 13:17

I have a couple of silk slips which I wear with certain dresses. Also sometimes wear a camisole with some tops. And other things I wear without a slip.

Frith2013 · 12/07/2024 13:23

From the title, I thought you were talking about pottery.

I've never owned one.

Giggorata · 12/07/2024 13:25

@DezTheMoaner, In one of the nearest towns we have a street with sari shops, Bangladeshi restaurants and food shops, so I have bought some locally and there are also quite a few on eBay.

If your underskirt was showing under your dress or skirt we used to say Charlie's dead!

We used to ask if it was raining in Paris that way you knew your slip was on show.
