Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

Why are they such an 'old woman' thing though? Nobody sees them and they make such a difference to how well dresses look.

I think the "old lady" comment is b*llshit and sneery. I wear the M&S cool comfort slips - they make your clothes hang and move better on your body.

It is such a shame to see a woman in a beautiful dress but no slip underneath, a dress clinging to your inner thighs as you walk is not a good sight.

Or sucked up their bits!

PrincessMee · 11/07/2024 23:54

When a slip was needed.

Does nobody wear slip any more?
DTisawazzock · 11/07/2024 23:58

Of course. If I buy an unlined dress then they are needed.

DTisawazzock · 11/07/2024 23:59

HaveNoIdeaForAName · 11/07/2024 18:14

They are for old ladies.

Don't be silly.

DTisawazzock · 12/07/2024 00:02

John Lewis call them "slips" https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-knee-length-slip/p6076074

If you want to keep cool by wearing cotton there's no need to wear a synthetic slip! Women in hot countries don't wear them.

I live in a hot country and wear a slip every day.

AtLeastMyCatLikesMe · 12/07/2024 00:27

I always wear slips under my dresses, I get them from M&S. Hardly any dresses are lined these days and it makes them hang better, and also in the current weather is an extra layer! Strangely I feel cooler in summer with a slip under the dress as well. I think it stops the dress from clinging or sticking in hot weather?

EndlessWashingUp · 12/07/2024 00:41

I don't bother with underskirts (half slips) but I regularly wear full length slips under dresses.

It's extra insulation (I work in a big tin shed, basically) and it's essentially the lining nobody ever bothers to put in clothes anymore which makes everything sit nicer on you.

I might treat myself to a few new ones now actually! Used to get mine from BHS - pretty much Markies quality but less expensive.

weirdoboelady · 12/07/2024 00:43

I noticed the dearth of slips well over 10 years ago! And things have NOT got better....

TammyJones · 12/07/2024 00:55

WhereAreWeNow · 11/07/2024 18:18

I've got 2 dress slips and I wear them with dresses that are v clingy or low cut or liable to fly open (wrap dresses). I think they're great. Not sure why more women don't wear them.

Yes ....for see through dresses and unlined skirts
Have a mini, just above the knee and one Just below the knee.
White from marks and Spencer's.
Wore one today at a funeral, as my best black funeral skirt was sticking to my tights.
And my favourite summer dress is totally see through in the sunshine.
I do buy only lined skirts these days though.

Suspect this thread is causing an uptick in sales of skips at Marks and Spencer. '46 sold in 48hrs'

They make me feel hot thinking about wearing one. And anything that adds bulk is likely to make you look fatter, not better surely?

The opposite.
Stops skirts sticking to you.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 11/07/2024 18:31

How do they work for you? I used to wear them, at DMs instructions. But they ride up and bunch around my waist. That’s why I don’t. They make sense, but don’t work.

Maybe get the next size up.
Without one my skirt clings to my legs in an unflattering way

ForGreyKoala · 12/07/2024 04:14

olivehater · 11/07/2024 22:49

No but most people wear cycle shorts under dresses these days.

Not here they don't! I've never worn cycle shorts in my life, nor has anyone else I know. How uncomfortably hot they must get.

ForGreyKoala · 12/07/2024 04:21

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/07/2024 22:59

Thin or see through material is just one reason to wear them. I wear a slip with all unlined dresses. I don't think I've got any that are see through. It makes everything hang better.

In winter it adds an extra layer for warmth and in summer it actually has a cooling effect. The slips themselves are material that doesn't cling and the slip prevents the dress clinging.

And I'm sure that keeping a slip between your skin and the material of the dress is ibetter for keeping the dress itself in good condition.

I did, briefly, wear a bamboo slip under a linen skirt and I can assure you that it did not have a cooling effect, quite the opposite! Now I just wear the skirt without benefit of a slip - summer is a time for wearing as little as possible, and I did mention I don't live in the UK so we have a lot more hot days. I rarely wear dresses or skirts in winter, other than my work skirt which was lined. I know very few people who would wear a slip, and their clothes hang just fine. My dresses are in great condition btw - what is so dreadful about skin that it is going to ruin a dress??? Many slips are made from synthetic material - yuk.

ForGreyKoala · 12/07/2024 04:25

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/07/2024 23:09

Completely the opposite.

I disagree. The poster was correct - horrible synthetic material under a cool dress just adds a layer of sticky heat.

Given that the slip section of any underwear department I've been in is minute I don't imagine many people here wear them.

ForGreyKoala · 12/07/2024 04:29

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 11/07/2024 23:19

I just love the way that all the posters who don't wear slips/ have never heard of them/ can't imagine wearing them are so authoritatively spouting complete garbage about what wearing a slip would be like.

For the hard of thinking - they don't add bulk; in hot weather they actually have a cooling effect as clothes don't stick; in cold weather they add a very thin layer to add warmth; every dress material will hang and move better with a slip.

For the extra hard of thinking some of us have worn slips under dresses or skirts in the summer and couldn't wait to get out of them because they feel hot. Maybe not in the UK, but I can assure you that in countries which have proper summers they are not comfortable. Some of us wear natural fabrics which don't stick - if we don't wish to wear horrible synthetic clothes why would we want to wear horrible synthetic slips?

quince2figs · 12/07/2024 05:04

Have worn slips for years under unlined dresses/skirts. Agree with all the benefits discussed!

I love the M&S cool comfort version, as the fabric and choice of lengths are perfect. if you are looking, M&S, PLEASE branch out into other colours, useful as nude/black/white are.

Requesting pastels (pink, blue, lilac, silver-grey, cream), and deep rich jewel shades - burgundy, forest green, french navy, chocolate brown, amber, and that lovely pinky-brown colour.

Keeping fingers crossed!

MulberryBushRoundabout · 12/07/2024 06:00

Wow, never knew people could get so opinionated about underwear 😂

Natural fabrics stick to sweaty bodies too. You're not the only person to ever spend time somewhere hot.

I always wear slips under dresses. I’m not old, I freelance in fashion and have been interviewed for Style pages and I always wear one. So those saying they are for grannies, your grannies have it right.

So many dresses and skirts aren’t lined now and they look awful and don’t sit right and glide over your body when you don’t wear one.

I know all my friends, also working in fashion wear them too. I definitely can tell when someone’s outfit isn’t lined or they’re not wearing a slip. The last wedding I went to, so many woman that would have benefited from a slip (and properly fitting underwear and shoes that were clean and polished, but that’s a whole other story).

EricHebbornInItaly · 12/07/2024 06:19

@ForGreyKoala I believe* *I’m from your neighbouring country and I always wore slips and in the height of summer. Never had an issue 🤷🏻‍♀️. Wore them living in countries much hotter than Australasia too

BatshitCrazyWoman · 12/07/2024 06:22

Wantitalltogoaway · 11/07/2024 22:34

I don’t really understand slips. Most of my summer dresses are strappy so I don’t want more straps underneath them, or they’re cut out at the back etc, so a slip wouldn’t work as it would show. I don’t tend to wear dresses in winter but if I do it’s more of a bodycon style and I wear a cardigan. So a slip wouldn’t work there either.

I’m in my forties so not that young but I’m thinking slips only work for old lady style dresses, which I’m not ready for yet!

I don't wear them under every single dress (and I wear dresses or skirts 90% of the time). Obviously if has cut outs or whatever I wouldn't.

FIFIBEBE · 12/07/2024 06:31

I went to a wedding this week wearing my new culottes slip under my dress. It provided an alternative to chub rub shirts which are a pain but necessary for me and a slip, perfect. M&S have every possible version of a slip.

fatteratforty · 12/07/2024 06:36

I wear them when dresses are a little too sheer or thin for comfort, but I also wear a thin vest under most tops to avoid my bra line showing.
Did struggle to find one recently & the lady in John Lewis directed me to Matalan who had a good selection.
