Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

WHERE ARE YOU FINDING THEM?!?

I've got maybe 4 dresses that I wear and immediately regret due to them riding up my bum crack and have only found M&S which are a bit above my budget. Any other ideas?

Matalan!

Metempsychosis · 12/07/2024 07:34

My best slip is from M&S and completely sheer so it adds practically no weight. I wouldn't wear the Coolmax ones on an actually hot day, because they are an extra layer when all's said and done but there's only about five of those per year in this country. Culotte ones look brilliant for chub run sufferers: so much cooler than cycling shorts.

This is the sort of outfit which would benefit from a slip. The aim is the same as for shapewear but without actually constricting you

I've never wore one. But I rarely wear dresses & skirts anyway. I find them impractical.

My mum is a senior citizen. I think she gave up slips in the 1990s.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 12/07/2024 07:44

Yes, definitely wear slips and often replace those oddly shaped ones in dresses with full, long slips - the dress looks and feels better and it protects them too. I have the M&S ones, that come in a variety of lengths and are great to wear, feel very smooth. Why would you not wear the right underwear for the outfit?

ForGreyKoala · 12/07/2024 07:55

Linen most certainly does not stick to sweaty bodies, linen clothing is normally loose.

EricHebbornInItaly · 12/07/2024 06:19

@ForGreyKoala I believe* *I’m from your neighbouring country and I always wore slips and in the height of summer. Never had an issue 🤷🏻‍♀️. Wore them living in countries much hotter than Australasia too

You obviously have a different internal temperature than me then. I can't stand the horrible things and prefer to wear the least amount of clothing possible in summer.

CharlotteRumpling · 12/07/2024 08:02

Those culotte shorts linked upthread look promising. I didn't know they existed!

JustPleachy · 11/07/2024 18:21

I always wear one with dress or skirt. M&S still sell them.

Was just about to say this. M&S have full slips, skirt slips and culotte slips.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/07/2024 08:14

I always wear a cotton or silk cami top (or Uniqlo Airism when it is hot) as it helps clothes sit better and/or prevents accidental see throughness.

I don't tend to wear a slip or petticoat as most dresses and skirts I have aren't clingy and are either lined or heavier natural fibres.

Despite being on the bigger side (size 16) I don't suffer from chub rub - I used to suffer badly as a teen, but years of kickboxing and yoga seems to have lengthened my thingh muscles.

Uniqlo are selling a fab skirt like that at the moment and it comes with a separate slip skirt.

A waist slip means I can wear linen and cotton unlined dresses and skirts in the winter with thermal tights without the skirts sticking to the tights with static.

I think some people aren’t aligned with the concept of the right underwear for an outfit. For various reasons. Hence flesh coloured leggings and the prevalence of visible pants. Others of us would put on an outfit and think it needs a different bra, or a slip or smooth fabric rather than lace underneath. And some people do see that something is making a difference but don’t know what it is, hence the plethora of style and beauty threads asking how to look more polished. The picture of the bias skirt and cut away shoulder outfit just upthread is an example of the need for solution underwear to look its best.

Just because the cut is loose doesn't mean the clothes won't stick.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 12/07/2024 08:35

I think it’s clear that bodies work differently. I can’t wear slips. They ride up, no matter how large they are.
Skirts over tights do the same thing- the skirt rides up indecently. The lining of a lined skirt does it too. It’s clearly me, not the items.

Coulotte shorts ought to work- but mine shred at the inner thigh.

D20 · 12/07/2024 08:56

Where was this thread last week when I was debating between the slip culottes and half slip? I ordered the half slips in the end to wear under a light cream maxi dress, to stop sunlight, and a heavy cotton midi dress that I can’t wear with tights in winter due to Velcro effect.

Im going to drop French knickers into the thread too. Currently wearing some under a loose cotton boilersuit so no VPL.

I never wear skirts or dresses but still have a half-slip from the 1980s in my lingerie drawer.

I wouldn't be surprised if the elastic in the waistband has perished in that time......
My elderly mother has and wears full slips : I only ever wear half-slips, but have half a dozen in different lengths, colours and weights. I wear them for all the same positive reasons everyone else has mentioned : warmth, comfort, elegance and stopping clothes from being see-through.

Onelifeonly · 12/07/2024 09:05

I only ever wore them with skirts, about 40 years ago, to stop a skirt from riding up over my tights. But even then I disliked skirts (women wore trousers less then) and I've never liked the feel of tights. Also because you always had to wear court shoes with them which never fit my feet properly.

As it happens I do have one short black slip still and I wear it about once a year with a particular short winter dress that I wear thick black tights with. Even then I have to keep checking the slip isn't showing.

Otherwise I buy dresses / floaty skirts suitable for the summer or that I can pair with leggings. And wear them with sandals, trainers or boots.

GoldFrame · 12/07/2024 09:05

I do, and agree with you @Darkdiamond

Bodies are weird. I've been borderline overweight and pear shaped with chunky jodhpur thighs all my adult life. On paper I should be a martyr to chub rub, but I never get it. I think it's the angle of my pelvis, some women on chub rub support threads say they get it terribly despite being size 8, so they presumably have an unfortunate pelvis shape.

It blows my mind to wear a dress under a dress.

I must check it out.

It’s not a second dress really though, it’s just the same as wearing a lined dress.

As noted by others on here, linings seem to have all but disappeared, hence the return of the slip. Now we can be charged for two items…

Good to hear people endorsing the culotte slips, I had looked at them before and considered buying them! I remain concerned that they’d bunch around my thighs as I get mega chub rub.

And I had chub rub all my teens and adulthood, despite doing loads of dancing as a teen. I lost 5 stone and despite still being bigger than I was as a teen/young adult, the chin rub vanished. Put a stone on and it’s back, so I’m working on getting it gone again because life without chubrub is a revelation.

Don’t invest in multiple until you’ve tried them. They shred on me. Liquid talc has been the best for that.

I have to admit I am pretty ignorant about fashion and clothes and the best way to wear things despite being in my mid forties and thing thread has been an eye opener for me. I am off to m&s this evening to buy myself some slips, and some culotte ones. I used to wear dresses and skirts a lot before the pandemic and they did stick and ride a lot, although these days I slouch around in jogging bottoms. I think it's time to resurrect the skirts. Thank you for this thread!

borntobequiet · 12/07/2024 09:33

Lots of people of all ages wear slips, for all the reasons given on here. They are widely available in many clothing stores.

The last time I tried to buy a formal skirt for work, I went to M&S as usual and couldn't find any that were lined. Wearing an unlined skirt with tights means it clings to my legs. So I always wear a slip.
