Thanks @botemp.
I found (one of!) the previous threads about it - looks like a popular dress 😆

Both women looked good - slightly prefer the chevronny one - but mostly as the red wouldn’t suit me. I’m afraid I like Carrie’s style too..

No problem with Starmer and family being wealthy - he’s in his 60s, he’s been a lawyer for decades, is married to an lawyer and a homeowner, I should hope he HAS made some money. It’s not illegal to be a success financially or even morally wrong.

You don’t go to Oxford with dreams of bouncing along the bottom of your overdraft in middle age.

‘’Victoria Starmer’s pitch-perfect fashion: aspirational and approachable’’

The chevron dress is much more own style. Shame it is so expensive. A faint whiff of Mary Poppins :)

She’s not a single woman, her husband is a multi multi millionaire. She can afford much more.

Keir Starmer is not a multi millionaire

TimeandMotion · 05/07/2024 17:26

It’s important to understand as well that the type of law that Starmer practised as a barrister, and his wife when she was a solicitor (human rights/civil liberties/criminal), is not at all well paid. I mean, you can make a reasonable living especially when you are top of your game like he was, but it’s a million miles from high value commercial cases or being in a City law firm.

Good for her, stylish and reasonably priced. An NHS salary only stretches so far.

Why would it come out of her salary alone. Aren't they married? Isn't it for his job that she has to parade around for everyone to comment on her clothes?

LaughingElderberry · 05/07/2024 18:06

I liked VS' dress. I wasn't so keen on AM's dress today, but I did like the one she wore yesterday when voting. Heels aren't my thing although TBF I'm not that up on fashion trends etc. But I thought the dress looked really pretty and suited her.

I loved Akshatas style. I think she always nailed it. I’ll miss seeing that.

I agree. Great sense of style.

WLMummy · 05/07/2024 18:15

Why would you think Starmer is a multi-millionaire? He’s been a civil servant forever, they have no money.

Why would you think Starmer is a multi-millionaire? He’s been a civil servant forever, they have no money.

In 2020, Keir Starmer was reported to own land worth £10 million. He owns a London home worth in excess of £1 million and he has a tax free pension pot of undisclosed value. It's fairly safe to assume that based on his total wealth, he's a multimillionaire, even without factoring in the considerable wealth he will most likely have generated throughout his previous legal career.

BobnLen · 05/07/2024 18:26

Both women looked lovely and very elegant, I did like Carrie Johnson's clothes also, she hired a lot of hers which seemed a good idea as if you are in the news a lot it's hard to wear the same thing twice.

WLMummy · 05/07/2024 18:26

the land is questionable. But really, a £1mn house in London is nothing (Kentish Town is hardly Kensington), pension pot is public sector and just being a lawyer means nothing. The Director of Public Prosecutions earns some 100k, so hardly the big bucks people here seem to imply.

The land is most certainly not questionable. I'm not sure why you feel the need to defend Keir Starmer. His wealth will not prevent him from being a competent Prime Minister.

SisterMichael · 05/07/2024 18:32

I really liked Akshata’s dress today.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 05/07/2024 18:40

I liked the red dress a lot, and think it would be something I would want. The stripey one is a horror - I dont think it is flattering on her at all. Maybe it is better in real life, but I think it's ugly.

TheChosenTwo · 05/07/2024 18:48

I loved the red dress, the sleeves in particular- good to know it’s in my budget as I’m tempted to get one for my holiday!
Also really like AM’s striped one, a bit marmite perhaps but I have a few stripey dresses in my wardrobe and I think it was similar to some of my other ones. I don’t have a gap for the stripey one but do for the red one!

It's not about defending Starmer, it's about wanting the debate to be grounded in facts.

When the Mail accused him of being a multi-millionaire, they were trying to make him out to be a hypocrite. But the article was cobbled together in their usual fashion ( a source says...said to be ..estimated at...) and bore no relation to reality.

I've been linking the Evening Standard article as it is a relatively unbiased source, given that the ES has never given Labour a free pass. But as the multiple posters claiming he is a millionaire don't seem to be able to read it, here's a screenshot.

Not defending him at all - and why would a self-made millionaire need to be defended rather than applauded? He’s just not one and people should stop saying so. Even the Daily Mail, never shy to discredit Labour, ran a story in 2022 that he sold the land for 400k. Which does not buy you a garage in London.

That information has also been shown to be incorrect, so is also 'not grounded in facts', unfortunately.

witheringrowan · 05/07/2024 19:04

"Several acres" in Surrey will not be worth £10 million unless it has planning permission for residential development.

Average farmland values are about £10k/acre, "improved" land with grazing a water supply & sheds might be £15-20k, perhaps slightly higher because it's Surrey. You'll only get north of a million per acre for fully permissioned land, serviced with electricity, water and roads and very little site remediation required.

Can you show me where? The only articles I can find refer to the original figure of 7.7 million which was basically made up, and clearly all rely on the same source. Please show me the credible evidence, I'll be genuinely happy to admit I'm wrong.

I thought she looked absolutely beautiful. The dress was perfect, and she just radiated health and joy. She and Keir look very comfortable together and as though they really do care about each other and support each other. To my surprise I found myself shedding an emotional tear as they entered No. 10!

I couldn't stop crying afterwards.

Maybe it was just exhaustion from the night before but it does feel as if we have a tiny bot of hope after so long. A cabinet almost entirely educated at state schools, an education secretary who used to be on free school meals, a housing secretary who lived in social housing. Maybe a government that at least tries to do something good.
