One of David Cameron’s ancestors practically built hsbc in China and the entire family is living off the hsbc shares he built up. Do you genuinely believe they pay their fair share of tax?

Missing the point. Akshata attracted a huge amount of attention because she is worth substantially more than her husband, and was a non-dom. This was in the press and caused negative publicity for Sunak so care had to be taken about how his wife presented in a different way to many other prime-minister's spouses in order to manage his image.

Clearinguptheclutter · 05/07/2024 14:28

I thought Victoria totally nailed it

not a fan of Akshata’s dress, though normally she also looks lovely

greenpolarbear · 05/07/2024 14:30

Akshata’s dress choice was interesting, because of the TV angle all I saw was a bunch of downward pointing blue arrows.

Awkward.

Normalnot · 05/07/2024 14:31

She’s an attractive woman with a lovely face. I thought she looked classy and elegant

Moonshine5 · 05/07/2024 14:32

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 05/07/2024 13:12

Because they weren't super wealthy non-doms, whose wealth and tax affairs had attracted considerable comment.

It was a comment on the cost of her clothes and the need to consider the optics.

You don't think Sam Cam is and was bought up with luxury /wealth. Put research glasses on.
You're right about negative wealth optics Carries' wallpaper choice came out negatively.

YellowAsteroid · 05/07/2024 14:33

Yes a lovely dress.

We should pass a veil over the monstrosity that Akshata Murty was wearing.

Moonshine5 · 05/07/2024 14:34

WhatWillIWear · 05/07/2024 13:10

I didn’t intend any specific meanness, @Myblindsaredown- truly! I despise the Conservatives but my interest in clothes is entirely separate. I thought it was a recognised thing that she had tried not to wear anything too outrageously expensive as the PM’s wife? That won’t matter now.

Thanks @botemp - Google tells me that’s about £257.00.

@Moonshine5 - fuck, yes! You would not want to hear me on SamCam … (You picked the wrong person for that veiled insult …)

🤷🏾‍♀️

Not veiled insult, transparent observation about dresses NHS workers should buy/ wear.

Newposter180 · 05/07/2024 14:35

Re the previous price comment - I think most people would cobble together a decent budget for an outfit if they knew they’d be on the front of every national newspaper in it! She’s obviously taken care to pick something high street/relatable etc.

I liked both dresses, I think it’s quite common to go red/white/blue (flag/party colours) in the circumstances (although didn’t notice the blue downward arrows point above which is pretty funny).

Bignanna · 05/07/2024 14:35

botemp · 05/07/2024 13:03

Her dress caught my eye too it is from here, the colour way she wears doesn't seem to be in stock anymore.

Very striking, she looked good in it

WhatWillIWear · 05/07/2024 14:37

LadeOde · 05/07/2024 13:56

Isn't it a shame all that's discussed about the new PM's wife is her being pretty and her dress. That's not MN style is it?

Bless you for your low opinion of your fellow MN users, @LadeOde!

Do you honestly think we don’t know women can do things other than stand silently wearing clothes?

Both women appeared, this morning, in very specific roles for which their outfits would have been carefully thought out. Do you also honestly think they hoped to go unnoticed or unremarked upon? I haven’t found it necessary or entertaining to discuss their husbands’ clothes because they were completely uniform and unremarkable - and because I’m unlikely to wear a man’s suit myself. (Tweed jacket would be a different matter!)

I can assure you if I were to encounter either woman in a professional capacity I probably could turn my pretty little head to whatever subject was under discussion. I used to find myself in court with Cherie Blair in the past. We definitely didn’t talk about clothes …

@Myblindsaredown your article quotes the first one I shared (the one which couldn't even spell his name right), which has no source for the 7.7 million figure.

My second article, from a source which is not pro-labour, shows that the multi millionaire accusations are false.

Do you have a credible source? I suspect not.

There are so many articles, he owns the land and property it is publicly avail info, google yourself if you prefer your articles to my articles,

bloody hell.😂

I wasn't taken by AM's dress until they walked to the car and I saw the band of red, that's a very striking dress, love it. VS's dress I thought was fine, but dull. I have no idea what I would wear under those circumstances!

I completely agree. When I first saw it and she was standing in front of the iron fence it my first thought was - ugh, I don't like that dress. It's so busy. But then when I saw the band of red on the bottom and walked away I thought she looked sensational. I really love it. I wonder what it would look like with a belt.

As for the polyester, unfortunately it seems like a fabric that's pretty hard to get away from now. Lots of designers use it now and their clothing is also a few £££ per item 😕

Crikeyalmighty · 05/07/2024 14:42

She looked lovely and her dress was great too

EllaPaella · 05/07/2024 14:43

Lentilweaver · 05/07/2024 13:48

Akshata's dress is awful.

Agreed.

TimeandMotion · 05/07/2024 14:47

I liked both BS and AM’s dresses.
I was struck by how much VS looks like the actress Ruth Wilson.

She’s my age, I am suddenly feeling very fat and frumpy.

I guess the issue is, do you care about accuracy or do you just want to sling mud?

The articles you've quoted are malicious clickbait designed to make the labour leader look like a hypocrite.

My second article is from a source which is not aligned with Labour but shows the multi millionaire claim to be false.

I care about this because I think "fake news" is s threat to our democracy. You don't seem to care about provenance and are happy to pass on inaccurate and unproven allegations.

Yes, Google, but Google with a view to discovering the truth.

MissingMoominMamma · 05/07/2024 14:53

It was always going to be a red dress for this occasion!

Don’t worry, you’ll never have to think about it!

@WhatWillIWear Glad you got that off your chest.

WhatWillIWear · 05/07/2024 15:20

I’m extremely glad you feel you’re contributing to the thread!

Lentilweaver · 05/07/2024 16:00

I like the black version of this dress.

FanSaBhaile · 05/07/2024 16:31

Sophie Raworth was wearing a pink dress that I really like on TV this morning, she's previously worn it at Chelsea Flower Show - anyone know where this one is from?

Victoria Starmer’s dress
