Can you show me where? The only articles I can find refer to the original figure of 7.7 million which was basically made up, and clearly all rely on the same source. Please show me the credible evidence, I'll be genuinely happy to admit I'm wrong.

The ES figures don't match his financial disclosures for the relevant tax year. We have no idea how much of the total land he owns was sold at that particular time anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

I've totally derailed the thread - my apologies. Both wives are beautiful stylish, well dressed ladies.

SparklyLeprechaun · 05/07/2024 19:33

The red dress really suited VS, really nice. Akshata is such a stylish woman normally, good figure as well, I don't know what she was thinking shrouding herself in that ugly dress, it gave Victorian maid vibes.

GingerPirate · 05/07/2024 19:45

WhatWillIWear · 05/07/2024 13:01

More interested in Akshata Murty‘s dress.

Presumably now they’re out of Downing St she won’t have to dress down for the electorate as much as she has in the past.

That was one weird dress! 👗

DoraMae · 05/07/2024 19:51

I think PP’s have missed that this is ‘style and beauty’, not AIBU. KS/RS wealth is not relevant here.

Back to the dresses…

I thought that AM’s dress was the perfect example of ‘the dress wore her’. She is so petite that the boldness of this dress was just too much and swamped her.

I couldn't stop crying afterwards.

Maybe it was just exhaustion from the night before but it does feel as if we have a tiny bot of hope after so long. A cabinet almost entirely educated at state schools, an education secretary who used to be on free school meals, a housing secretary who lived in social housing. Maybe a government that at least tries to do something good.

most of the cabinet are Oxford graduates.

I know plenty of people who went to Oxbridge from state schools

deeahgwitch · 05/07/2024 20:01

Mumsnetters are so witty - love @InterestQ comment "You don't go to Oxford with dreams of bouncing along the bottom of your overdraft in middle age."

StripedTomatoes · 05/07/2024 12:59

Good for her, stylish and reasonably priced. An NHS salary only stretches so far.

£275 reasonably priced? That a week's rent for a lot of people.

GettingStuffed · 05/07/2024 20:03

It is a fair amount of money for an average family, but it's a perfectly reasonable price for a dress that the wife of the Prime Minister is going to wear on one of the most photographed days of her life.

The multi-millionaire thing is clearly bullshit, but the Leader of the Opposition earns £144,000 and the Prime Minister gets £160,000. They can afford a frock that costs a couple of hundred quid, especially if they're old enough that they bought in London decades ago so aren't burdened with a ruinous mortgage.

SparkyBlue · 05/07/2024 20:18

@GettingStuffed it might not be cheap but I'm from a working class council estate background and quite a lot of people I know would pay that for a big occasion dress like an immediate family members wedding or something like that. This was certainly a big occasion. She looked beautiful.

Would you rather she’d dressed in some cheap fast fashion supporting modern slavery? If an educated woman can’t buy a £275 dress after a successful 20-30 year career in London, what on earth is the point. It’s a reasonably priced, British brand - seems perfectly appropriate for the occasion.

Wow what a nasty comment

The multi-millionaire thing is clearly bullshit

I mean, their next door neighbour’s house sold for £2.4m recently…

Lifeomars · 05/07/2024 21:02

I thought she looked lovely. Her hair is great, she is slim and has great posture. Did wonder how she feels deep down about the inevitable scrutiny she will get. I am sure she and Starmer must have discussed it at great length.

I wasn't saying anything about her wearing that dress but the comment that it was reasonably priced

Absolutely this. They just seemed so kind and I really do believe that Starmer is in it for all the right reasons - public service. His speech was modest, yet confident, and honest too. I was impressed at how he thanked and congratulated Rishi - it felt genuine and was just classy. I think the tears started coming at that point - here, at last, is a calm grown up. It’s been a long wait, frankly.

bigbadbarry · 05/07/2024 21:22

Akshata’s dress would have been better if the stripes on the skirt were centred properly

Blondiney · 05/07/2024 21:42

She’s a very pretty woman. Her husband reminds me a lot of Imelda Staunton.

I have to admit I don't immediately think of Imelda Staunton when I look at our new PM.

It is. Even I could afford it, and I’m just a basic rate taxpayer up North. It’s not exactly Saint Laurent, is it?

Scirocco · 05/07/2024 22:17

Thanks, @Fe2O3Girl - I was wondering where it was from. I really like the black colourway too. Seriously considering it, although I probably wouldn't look nearly as stylish in it!

PorridgeEater · 05/07/2024 22:21

"that dress looks like the unfortunate result of a brief liaison between a zebra and an extra from an amateur production of The Sound Of Music"
😆😆😆
That's rather what I thought - felt a bit sorry for her but I expect life will have its compensations.

I’m most of the cabinet are highly educated.

Thought both VS snd AM looked fab and seem nice women.

Starmer is absolutely not a multimillionaire and anyone who thinks a £1m house in London is a sign of wealth knows zilch about London
