Define your style

I enjoy reading the style and beauty section on here, it’s largely (not always) friendly and supportive. One thing that clear clear is that there are a wide range of ideas in terms of style.

So, sort of a poll without a poll…how would you define yours?

I flit between monochrome “Swedish Architect” (if you remember the thread) and bright Beachy Boho which is a bit of a contrast. The one trend that runs through both will be that something in my outfit is oversized. I think I dress to try and stand out rather than fit in and feel very flat if I’m wearing something too safe like jeans and a T however nice the fit.

Would anyone else like to share?

Slighted dated, noughties inspired, think I'm thinner than I am style😂

PragmaticDramatic · 28/06/2024 18:24

Depends on how I feel and who I want to be or at least portray me as.

MysweetAudrina · 28/06/2024 19:18

75% sweaty Betty yoga clothes
15% fitted trousers, midi skirts, fitted tops and heels ( work)
10% sexy but comfortable going out clothes e.g bandeau jumpsuit or bodycon midi dress.

I never wear jeans, T-shirts, shirts or anything loose.

I'm 50 this year and a size 12

My 2024 summer style is 'pirate on safari'.

Magpiecomplex · 28/06/2024 19:37

I've been described as a counterculture goth - goth tendencies but with bright colours! I skew more classic goth/rock chick in the winter and more bohemian in the summer.

needhelpwiththisplease · 28/06/2024 19:38

Bag lady chic

I can’t work out if this is genuine or not, but I need to know what “pirate on safari” involved 😂

I completely get this. If I go for something like a haircut I always dress for how I want to be seen so the haircut matches the look

Classic silhouettes in statement monochrome colors? So a simple well-tailored pantsuit but in bright purple with a bright purple top. I really like how clean and pulled together limited palettes look. Also lots of gold accessories and expensive handbags (the only part of my wardrobe I can justify spending ££££ on).

I need some of what you have. I think park of the reason I go oversized is a fear of being too sexy. Sometimes I’ll put something on (body con midi being a good example) and think “wow I look good” and then I throw an oversized shirt over the top.

I don’t always get it right, but I’m aiming for 90’s classic minimalist, a la Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Lots of neutrals, relaxed fit, low key.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/06/2024 07:37

Work = pretty classic. Fitted dresses, heels, maybe a linen suit, in grey, cream and neutrals mainly.
Rest of the time I flit between a rock chick vibe and a bit more boho when it’s warmer.

Great thread! After reading the “curated closet” I decided my style was a Parisian hippy lost in the Highlands. My autumn/winter look is dark academia (loved that thread), lots of tweed, skinny jeans and a Claudia Winkleman-esque cape. By spring though I completely switch, floaty jersey trousers, white / cream blouses and currently enjoying the high-waisted wide leg jeans being back.

LunaNorth · 29/06/2024 07:59

90s student. It’s not a rut, it’s a groove.

Meadowfinch · 29/06/2024 08:13

Maybe rural chic.

I aim for colourful & exuberant. I am tall and lean which helps. I like comfortable clothes, natural fibres, and plenty of colour. I look for well cut clothes that will last, rather than buy less expensive things often.

My favourite summer clothes are two close-fit linen dresses from Armani Jeans that are 20+ years old, I wear long cotton skirts or shorts with fitted tops, Cropped jeans with linen shell tops, block heels or beaded/jewelled leather flat sandals. I'm good at buying summer clothes and am complimented regularly.

For some reason winter clothes that suit me are much harder to find.

I have bought a few pairs of light material wide leg cropped trousers in plain colours (pirate). I have some off shoulder tops with a nipped in waist (pirate). I also have some practical short sleeved button up shirts to protect me from the sun in various colours that would not look out of place if I was a (safari) ranger. I mix this up by wearing jumpsuits which I worry a little bit that they look like pyjamas but they're so comfortable I'm going to keep wearing them.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/06/2024 08:48

Have you got a website where I can find my style? Or maybe I just don't have one.
I'd say I want to be stylish, but I'm hampered by practicalities. I feel the cold so am always very covered up, can't follow tips like 'show your ankles and wrists to be more feminine'. Have bad feet so always in ugly shoes. Live in a city where nobody dresses up ever so always looking casual.

I often wear a matching leisure wear set, like a plain track suit with wide leg pants, and then drape a lovely wrap or pashmina over the top cinched in with a belt. Goes well with some Allbirds sneakers which are very comfortable

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/06/2024 09:10

I’m Swedish Architect but in a summer colour palette. I never wear black.

l like oversized simple stuff. Don’t own anything figure hugging at all. Never wear man made fibres as they make me itch like shit.

I recently had a 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure cuff in and it gave me severe contact dermatitis.

Ha ha I love that description!

I can't say I have one style, it's different every day, and I work in fashion so I have had to tip my hat to current styles.

So I'd call myself "Age appropriate trend slave".

henlake7 · 29/06/2024 10:38

hmmm... tomboy with retro/boho vibes?
I tend to stick more with trousers and if Im in a dress or skirt it will be with trainers or baseball boots.
But I also love abit of colour and pattern, esp something vintage.

saturnspinkhoop · 29/06/2024 10:46

Jeans and t-shirt. Sometimes branching out and never getting it quite right.
