Define your style

I enjoy reading the style and beauty section on here, it’s largely (not always) friendly and supportive. One thing that clear clear is that there are a wide range of ideas in terms of style.

So, sort of a poll without a poll…how would you define yours?

I flit between monochrome “Swedish Architect” (if you remember the thread) and bright Beachy Boho which is a bit of a contrast. The one trend that runs through both will be that something in my outfit is oversized. I think I dress to try and stand out rather than fit in and feel very flat if I’m wearing something too safe like jeans and a T however nice the fit.

Would anyone else like to share?

I’m Kibbe Soft Dramatic so love anything draped, cowl necked, ruched, assymetric in tactile materials like silk, satin, velvet, wool.

Dresses/Skirts must have a knee or thigh length split and mostly my skirt lengths are long- hate knee length but will wear mini in height of summer.

Top half must be low cut - anything high necked makes my head look huge for some reason.

My go too outfits are cowl necked silk sleeveless shift tops tucked into high waisted tailored trousers or midi length ruched skirts for work.
Going out would be a silk or satin cami midi dress with split at side.

I think my overall style is quite sexy - don’t really care about the sexy, just like my clothes to fit my body. I abhor the oversize look as it swamps me and makes me look 6 months pregnant. I can just about do a floaty summer top but must be over cut off frayed denim shorts for example to balance it out.

I guess I'd define my personal style as a perpetually earth toned and neutral librarian trying to fit in at the Incheon Arrivals lounge but not quite cool enough

AhBiscuits · 29/06/2024 11:28

Ex-rock chick, middle class mum. Pretty standard Boden, M&S, Sea Salt, Fat Face with some little hints of my past self here and there.

Antinori86 · 29/06/2024 14:21

Am a slim hourglass with long limbs/neck/fingers so I tend to wear what suits. I like fitted clothes, but they will also be 3/4 length sleeves, mid-calf, high-neck ie a bit covered up.

I can veer towards the masculine (love a bit of power dressing. DH calls them my "Shiv Roy" days). I also like draping, high sculptural necklines, peplums, structured shapes.

Dislike patterns but like a dramatic, watercolour print. Lots of rusts, mustard, yellow greens, chocolate, cream, maroon. Dislike polyester.

Autumn/winter: polo necks, mid calf pencil skirts, brogues, tweed capes, high waisted trousers, chunky heels, trouser suits with cigarette pants. Tuxedos or long sequin dresses for black tie events. Wool, tweed, silk, cashmere.

Spring/summer: oversized linen shirts knotted at the waist, wrap around close-fitting skirts. Silk blouses, cotton high waisted pencil skirts. Wrap dresses in silk, viscose, cotton, linen. Denim shorts and a loose shirt. Cotton dresses fitted at the waist. Flat gold or tan sandals. Perhaps a 2 inch block heel. Silk, cotton, linen, denim.

No idea how you'd characterise any of the above!

MaGueule · 29/06/2024 15:13

On my best days ‘Marylebone lady in the 7th Arrondissement’ Lightweight cashmere, flattering wide leg trousers, immaculate white trainers or loafers. Black linen with tan leather, a gorgeous winter wool coat that hides a multitude of style mishaps. Knitted dresses and boots, a silk shirt and leather pencil skirt, blazers that help me to feel like a genuine grown up. Cashmere scarves and hats.

On very many days my style is, ‘Kids have missed the school bus, I’m already late for work, there’s only decaf coffee left, where’s my shirt? Why does my hair stick out at the side like that? There’s yoghurt on my trousers, oh well a Labrador can lick it off. There’s my shirt, under the Labrador’

Your style sounds gorgeous. I want you to dress me!

FilthyRich · 29/06/2024 15:16

Old money gentry meets more royal than the royals, obviously.

Endofthebeginning · 28/06/2024 19:34

My 2024 summer style is 'pirate on safari'.

Please tell us more!
I’m a very boring dresser, but reckon I could get behind that.

Riffraffarchitect · 29/06/2024 15:25

I AM a Swedish architect and my style is probably not very stylish at all since I spend a fair amount of time on construction sites and floaty things are just daft on those occasions.

I’m worried that I don’t have a style. I have light blonde wavy hair and wear classic stripes, navy blue, black, tan brogues and a tan coloured handbag full of fine liner pens and measuring tools.

I also enjoy converse in various colours. I look a bit scruffy at the weekends. Stripes and old jeans

How can I go about finding my style? I would love to have one! I find clothes shopping very stressful as I’m 5ft 2

cheapskatemum · 29/06/2024 17:15

Sorry @Riffraffarchitect, I can't answer your question. I'm finding it hard enough to define my own style! Definitely fitted, particularly at the waist as that's where I go in. So this year it's high waisted jeans & skirts with either tucked in vest tops & looser, but short: blouses, shrugs, jackets as I feel the cold. I like my feet, so happy in sandals. Also wear trainers as comfortable for work which involves being on my feet a lot. Will wear a heel if the occasion suits it.
Hair is big, wild, wavy/curly and natural grey/gunmetal. I like that it's got almost white stripes at the front on each side of the side parting.

cheapskatemum · 29/06/2024 17:17

Colours! I forgot to mention colours. Love winter brights, particularly fuschia. Teamed with white in warmer weather & black in colder weather. Love a floral patterned top.

StormingNorman · 29/06/2024 17:24

Somewhere between Princess Di & Jane Birkin 🤣

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 29/06/2024 18:09

Definitely rock chick/biker vibes. Summer and warmer weather tends to lean towards Boho/preppy depending on how I'm feeling.

ForForToo · 29/06/2024 18:22

I’ve never really thought about ‘my style’, but I’ve realised I’m quite a classic, safe dresser.

I like neutral colours. I wear a lot of black, some navy, lots of white/beige//champagne/camel/pale pink and deeper greens and blues in winter.

I like either good tailoring (work) or complete comfort (casual), nothing fussy, not interested in gimmicky fashions.

I don’t like to stand out for what I’m wearing. I like to make an impression of well groomed, clean, made an effort etc but don’t want my clothes to be a focal point.

Boring, maybe? Grin.

Normallynumb · 29/06/2024 18:23

Tomboy with a tiny feminine touch
Jeans, T shirts( never plain?
Popover crisp cotton blouses, with a flower or two
Always blues/ greens
Trainers or ankle boots in winter
Leather jacket

CollyBobble · 29/06/2024 18:25

Timeless classic.

FilthyRich · 29/06/2024 18:39

@StormingNorman , we might be sisters. Wink

WhoppingBigBackside · 29/06/2024 18:41

Equestrian but I love a cream cardigan. Ecru especially. Archers

SerenaWaldorf · 29/06/2024 18:47

I like to think of it as "Rock Stars girlfriend" in reality it's probably rock stars girlfriend goes to the gym as I find gym clothes easier to run around after the kids. But I have a lot of dark colours, bits of leopard print, band T-shirts, dr martens and checkerboard vans, lots of chunky silver jewellery.

Antinori86 · 30/06/2024 07:10

Thank you @MaGueule - and right back at you!

Springwatch123 · 30/06/2024 07:16

I reckon I have to main traits. - boho and biring

Boho - maxi dresses, Joe brown clothes, not full-on hippy, but a hint towards it

Boring - jeans and tshirt combo, black trousers and ‘nice top’ for work, ‘safe’ everyday clothes.

Springwatch123 · 30/06/2024 07:19

Gwenhwyfar · 29/06/2024 08:48

Have you got a website where I can find my style? Or maybe I just don't have one.
I'd say I want to be stylish, but I'm hampered by practicalities. I feel the cold so am always very covered up, can't follow tips like 'show your ankles and wrists to be more feminine'. Have bad feet so always in ugly shoes. Live in a city where nobody dresses up ever so always looking casual.

When I discovered the concept of style personalities, I found it alot easier to dress. Sometimes on mn, people suggest wearing xyz clothes, but if you gravitate towards sdf, then you’re never going to feel totally at ease in other styles
