Define your style

Tacomuseday · 28/06/2024 18:12

I enjoy reading the style and beauty section on here, it’s largely (not always) friendly and supportive. One thing that clear clear is that there are a wide range of ideas in terms of style.

So, sort of a poll without a poll…how would you define yours?

I flit between monochrome “Swedish Architect” (if you remember the thread) and bright Beachy Boho which is a bit of a contrast. The one trend that runs through both will be that something in my outfit is oversized. I think I dress to try and stand out rather than fit in and feel very flat if I’m wearing something too safe like jeans and a T however nice the fit.

Would anyone else like to share?

I’m very classic and masculine. Loose trousers, plain tshirt or jumper, dresses only for special going-out occasions (and even then the dress is a solid colour probably black). I often wear clothes from the men’s department because they’re more minimal with none of the twiddly bits or details they tend to put on women’s clothes.

I like everything plain with no detail, not just clothes. Took all the chrome off my car and replaced it with matt black. Spent ages arguing with the computer shop because I wanted a plain black computer and I asked them to not stick the various stickers on the case, they thought I was a nutter.

I think I’m a bit like this! Block colours, simple lines, no fussy embellishments.

It’s so interesting how much variation there is. Does everyone feel like they can keep “current” (if they want to) and still stick to their core style?

This has also reminded me I need to work out my Kibbe type

I AM a Swedish architect and my style is probably not very stylish at all since I spend a fair amount of time on construction sites and floaty things are just daft on those occasions.

I’m worried that I don’t have a style. I have light blonde wavy hair and wear classic stripes, navy blue, black, tan brogues and a tan coloured handbag full of fine liner pens and measuring tools.

I also enjoy converse in various colours. I look a bit scruffy at the weekends. Stripes and old jeans

How can I go about finding my style? I would love to have one! I find clothes shopping very stressful as I’m 5ft 2

An actual Swedish architect! Amazing! This is the thread I was thinking of… I guess there is a lot of stereotyping going on, but I think possitive.https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/3954599-Swedish-Architect-fashion?page=2

Re funding your style, as others have suggested try the Kibbe analysis. I’ve just done mine and it’s basically confirmed the style I’ve landed on via trial and error

Does it fit? do I like the colour? can I afford it? done.

dudsville · 30/06/2024 11:56

I didn't know my style had a name until a thread popped up on here about it years ago, but I don't know what I'd call it these days. I don't wear jewely, my hair is natural, my makeup is just foundation, and my nails are never polished. Clothes are academic, and darker leaning, but a bit Velma/hipster/Bloomsbury Set. I just bought a new pair of crazy horse DMs, have the slouchy wool socks, and I have lots of corduroy, checks/ginghams, skirts, trousers and dresses, wool cardigans and jumpers, that are structurally intersting and feminie but not floral, summer is strickly arizonas. The trainer trend has never suited me but I do occassionaly wear a beat up old pair of all white addidas if the weather or acticvity doesn't suit sandals but the DM shoes feel too heavy.

I remember when I found those threads about different styles, it really helped me to understand why I felt much happier and more myself in some outfits than others. A bit like when I worked out that I wasn't having a bad day but certain colours just didn't suit me. It helpd me to stop the browsing style of shopping and focus. It also gave me a sense of what to wear for lounging at home, before that I always felt like I would be embarrased to answer the door or take the rubbish out. I wish I'd known all of this decades ago!

Am a slim hourglass with long limbs/neck/fingers so I tend to wear what suits. I like fitted clothes, but they will also be 3/4 length sleeves, mid-calf, high-neck ie a bit covered up.

I can veer towards the masculine (love a bit of power dressing. DH calls them my "Shiv Roy" days). I also like draping, high sculptural necklines, peplums, structured shapes.

Dislike patterns but like a dramatic, watercolour print. Lots of rusts, mustard, yellow greens, chocolate, cream, maroon. Dislike polyester.

Autumn/winter: polo necks, mid calf pencil skirts, brogues, tweed capes, high waisted trousers, chunky heels, trouser suits with cigarette pants. Tuxedos or long sequin dresses for black tie events. Wool, tweed, silk, cashmere.

Spring/summer: oversized linen shirts knotted at the waist, wrap around close-fitting skirts. Silk blouses, cotton high waisted pencil skirts. Wrap dresses in silk, viscose, cotton, linen. Denim shorts and a loose shirt. Cotton dresses fitted at the waist. Flat gold or tan sandals. Perhaps a 2 inch block heel. Silk, cotton, linen, denim.

No idea how you'd characterise any of the above!

Dramatic, architectural, autumnal?

neverbeenskiing · 30/06/2024 12:52

Just asked DN (17) and apparently my personal "aesthetic" is "a blend of 90's and light academia with a hint of old money".

Not sure what she's on about but I gravitate towards cosy knits in browns/rusts/dark neutrals (paired with satin midi skirts if oversized or wide legged jeans if cropped or more fitted) in autumn/winter. I like an oversized blazer for work. Currently living in fitted, slightly cropped camis/bandeau tops with oversized shirts in (plain or subtley striped neutral colours) and wide legged trousers or 90's style slip dresses with beige/neutral Adidas or Vans trainers, or tan birkenstocks. jewelry is simple and always gold. Hair is bobbed and usually beachy waves, but more volume if I'm going out and want to look more 'put together'.

This has also reminded me I need to work out my Kibbe type

Since discovering my body shape (pear) and colour (autumn ), and recognising there are personality styles (classic, retro, boho etc), then I’m less bothered about being current, but being true to myself.

Or at least, if the trend says wear pastel pink, and that’s not one of my colours, then I just don’t wear it. Or with key trends, I find something that suits me in that fashion. Ie, a round neck version rather than v neck.

Riffraffarchitect · 30/06/2024 16:16

Right so I’ve done my homework a bit

  1. Kibbe = Soft Classic
  2. Personalities are academia (light and dark depending on season). Creative for accessories (I love colourful shoes and earrings) but my hair is light blonde, wavy and thick & I live near the beach. So I’m a little beachy boho too.

My colourings are Bright Spring however I love wearing forest greens and dark reds but I ought to be wearing jade green and pink!
All well!!

I am happy in my Fleetwood Mac t shirt and dungarees 🙈

I’m definitely struggling though

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 30/06/2024 16:22

Not sure, so need to research. I like well cut clothing, with a twist, tailoring but not too tailored, navy, block colours, with a twist, thinking texture and statement shoes. Not sure if I fit one tribe or have a foot in a few!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/06/2024 16:28

Hobo. No, it's not a typo.

GellerYeller · 30/06/2024 16:38

I’d love to know what my type is! I straddle ‘don’t look at me’ and ‘I’m insouciant’(possibly pretentious that!).
I don’t like sparkles, can’t pull off anything too girly and the kids have to prise anything lacy/sheer off me for a night out because it’s a cliche apparently. I love Zara and when I was young I bought everything I could afford in Kookai.
I need help!

Littleguggi · 30/06/2024 20:25

This thread has made me realise that I need to define my style as I have too many styles going on at once, meaning despite having a million clothes I am never satisfied.

Some days I am just in gym wear, other days pyjamas (lazy weekends), other days super smart/ classic (for work). When going out, I flit between boho vibes and romantic floral frill vibes. I am drawn to clothes that have interesting features like embroidery or gorgeous prints, but I am quite an introvert so don't like to be too out there.

So in answer to your question I have no idea, it depends what day and mood you catch me in!

protectoroftherealm · 30/06/2024 20:32

This is england with a touch of football hooligan 'casual and Manchester 'baggies' mix up.

Parisian momcore

Lots of classic denim/tshirt or jumper combos. Breton stripes. Very few patterns or florals. Fitted dresses mainly for work. Black Lycra for gym. Natural fabrics.

fiddleleaffig · 30/06/2024 23:13

Defining my style would be something like Preppy-with-dreams-of-being-a-disco-dancing-Greek-goddess.
I think most my clothes would fall under preppy vibes, but I have a weak spot for anything with sparkles - glitter or sequins, and floaty, wistful dresses.

DramaAlpaca · 01/07/2024 01:54

I think I'd describe mine as classic with a twist - where the twist is almost always colour. I love coloured shoes and bags in particular.

There are far more things I won't wear than I will. For example, no glitter, no logos, no brand names, no bling, no cold shoulder, no cropped trousers, no fussy details... there's more, there's loads more.

I don't like newly fashionable trends, but might buy into it if it still looks good the following season. If I like something I'm not going to stop wearing it because apparently it's not in any more - skinny jeans being a case in point as they suit me. But I've discovered late on that wide leg jeans also look great on me, so I've adopted that trend.
