Am I the only one that hates women’s swimwear/beachwear options?

A total first world problem…Just wanting a rant really. I have booked my first holiday since becoming a mum and am finding the bikini options quite depressing. I’ve never liked one piece swim suits so bikini/tankini is really my only option. I just find them all so revealing and I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing them. The tankini options tend to look so plain and unattractive and I find they are marketed at the plus size market so unavailable in my size sometimes. I am finding most styles are either too revealing or on the other end of the scale just frumpy 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just want something pretty that covers the bottom a bit better. I don’t want to have shave or wax while I’m away for two weeks so knickers are a bit too revealing. I feel annoyed that men don’t have to decide whether they want their pubes on show!!!

I am late thirties, a size 8 but I do go up a size or two on bottoms to get more coverage. Another rant: why do the bottoms only cover half a bum cheek?! 🤬 perhaps a lot of retailers believe that women want to bare as much flesh as possible, especially if they are of a smaller frame??? I don’t get it.

I have bought a skirted bottom from M&S online (can’t remember which brand) which is ok and still feminine without looking frumpy. But I can’t find anything else remotely pretty but still not too much flesh on the bottom area on show. People have suggested sarongs/cover ups but honestly I just want something I can go in and out of a pool without too much faffing. I will have a two year old to run after!

Sorry, rant over! Does anyone else feel my pain?

I mean you've just listed multiple options, but for whatever reason you personally don't want to wear them. You can't get annoyed that bikinis are too revealing if you make the choice not to wear a swimsuit or tankini. I find there are plenty options out there. What about a bikini top with tankini shorts? Rash vest?

ToBeOrNotToBee · 24/06/2024 11:41

Verys own range have some midi briefs that are basically just like normal knickers. I have them in all colours as they're just what you describe.

JaneJeffer · 24/06/2024 11:43

Get some Next bikini shorts

I hear that. I guess I must be a lot more fussy than most or that I’m looking for something very particular. I find the shorts don’t really cover much or that they cover everything but are just ugly. Perhaps I am looking for the impossible. I’m not bothered about showing my top half as much. Just feel self conscious about the bottom. I just want bottom coverage but also want something pretty or elegant, no just wearing massive knickers.

I have read that back and I clearly am asking for a lot 😂 maybe it is just me then. Was hoping I’m not alone!

No I am with you. I much prefer bikini all year round but would love to wear nice shorts instead of stupid pants.

wutheringkites · 24/06/2024 11:48

I agree op, it's really hard to find something that's flattering, comfortable and not revealing.

Try Pour Moi - they have a good range of bottoms and tankinis etc, and great if you have a bigger bust.

Thank you. Glad I’m not alone. I find it incredible that women seem to have accepted that knickers/pants is what we wear as swimwear when the options for men are various different styles of shorts or they can also go for the pants style.

I know someone is going to come along and say but I dooooo have choice. I could hunt for some specific bikini that has a ‘boy short’. Again, why is it called boy short. I’m not a boy. Just a woman that doesn’t want to wear pants 😂

I hear you!! Since having children I now throw on a pair of swim shorts over my bikini/costume and feel sooo much more relaxed. Like these but in black, I don’t think Decathlon sell them anymore but you’ll find similar online.

Glad it’s not just me then. Makes me feel better to know I am ot the only one struggling, but sorry us women have to go through this on top of all the other shit we have to go through 😂

YANBU.

I only wear one-piece suits, but while I'm okay (if not thrilled) with a standard swimsuit at the pool - where I don't think about people looking at me, we're all there to swim in the lanes - I've been looking recently for a legsuit to not have the knickers look at the lake and beach (which I will then also use for lane swimming).

It's difficult to get a decent one even there, as they either seem to have bust shelves or weird cutouts, and once you avoid these, you're often in the level of FINA-approved competition suits, so they're thrice the cost of the previous items and have a mark above your arse, so there's something else drawing attention there. I have seen a few tolerable ones before, but maybe for that reason they were mostly out of stock or in very restricted sizes available, so I'm still looking.

Men get to cover their whole bum. Why are we to be pieces on meat on show?

See, that’s something I would look at and think it needs to be taken off to go in the water. But if that one is meant for swimming then it may be worth giving it a go. I’ll have a look. Thanks

Try surf shops/brands.

board shorts, rash vests, bikini’s meant to surf in not show flesh.

mondaytosunday · 24/06/2024 12:01

My 19 year old DD dug out a couple old swimsuits which pretty much fell apart. Going to Spain so time to find a new swimsuit! She prefers one piece. She's a size 10-12.
Sure there are a variety online. But could we find anything in an actual shop to try on? They are so limited. I find that increasingly true - when she needed a prom dress we had to go online (and then pay for alterations). Her Leavers dinner dress we went to several department stores, TK Maxx, and she finally compromised on one at John Lewis. It was best of a bad lot.
Stores may lament the effect of online shopping but when in store they often direct you to look online!

You get me! I feel like I have little choice but to choose swim wear that parades me as a piece of meat. I don’t walk about in knickers in daily life and men don’t have to do it but somehow society has accepted that this is the norm for women and I feel really annoyed that in this day and age we are in this position.

Like you say, anything that has more coverage is like an obvious category. “I’m an Olympian” or “I’m covering head to toe for religious reasons”. I’m neither of those. Just want to be comfortable in the same way that a man can be!

I feel like the board shorts look to try hard on me. Like I am trying to look like a surfer when I would never do such a thing! 😂

I’m mostly splashing around with the kids not swimming lengths but they don’t bother me at all. Actually feel really smug wearing them that I’m so much less self conscious than all the women tugging down their costumes, especially at water park/slide type places.

Next have a nice range in my local store of one pieces and bikini but highwaisted bottoms?

A quick google has brought up:

Cotton Traders

Fat Face

Boden

It’s not really my waist I want covered so much. It’s the bum and front/crotch/pube region I want more hidden 😂

I prefer a one piece or board shorts / rash vest but my hod trying to get bikinis for Dts (13) for holiday is proving to be a nightmare. They all seem to be Brazilian style and the bottoms are tiny. Really tiny. We've had a lot of arguments...
