Am I the only one that hates women’s swimwear/beachwear options?

A total first world problem…Just wanting a rant really. I have booked my first holiday since becoming a mum and am finding the bikini options quite depressing. I’ve never liked one piece swim suits so bikini/tankini is really my only option. I just find them all so revealing and I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing them. The tankini options tend to look so plain and unattractive and I find they are marketed at the plus size market so unavailable in my size sometimes. I am finding most styles are either too revealing or on the other end of the scale just frumpy 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just want something pretty that covers the bottom a bit better. I don’t want to have shave or wax while I’m away for two weeks so knickers are a bit too revealing. I feel annoyed that men don’t have to decide whether they want their pubes on show!!!

I am late thirties, a size 8 but I do go up a size or two on bottoms to get more coverage. Another rant: why do the bottoms only cover half a bum cheek?! 🤬 perhaps a lot of retailers believe that women want to bare as much flesh as possible, especially if they are of a smaller frame??? I don’t get it.

I have bought a skirted bottom from M&S online (can’t remember which brand) which is ok and still feminine without looking frumpy. But I can’t find anything else remotely pretty but still not too much flesh on the bottom area on show. People have suggested sarongs/cover ups but honestly I just want something I can go in and out of a pool without too much faffing. I will have a two year old to run after!

Sorry, rant over! Does anyone else feel my pain?

YANBU.

I only wear one-piece suits, but while I'm okay (if not thrilled) with a standard swimsuit at the pool - where I don't think about people looking at me, we're all there to swim in the lanes - I've been looking recently for a legsuit to not have the knickers look at the lake and beach (which I will then also use for lane swimming).

It's difficult to get a decent one even there, as they either seem to have bust shelves or weird cutouts, and once you avoid these, you're often in the level of FINA-approved competition suits, so they're thrice the cost of the previous items and have a mark above your arse, so there's something else drawing attention there. I have seen a few tolerable ones before, but maybe for that reason they were mostly out of stock or in very restricted sizes available, so I'm still looking.

Men get to cover their whole bum. Why are we to be pieces on meat on show?

Op have a look on Shein, I'm the same as you and I ordered a few different shorts and tankini tops last year. They have so many options and patterns.

I prefer a one piece or board shorts / rash vest but my hod trying to get bikinis for Dts (13) for holiday is proving to be a nightmare. They all seem to be Brazilian style and the bottoms are tiny. Really tiny. We've had a lot of arguments...

It seem to be the way fashion and style is going. I really feel that women would want and buy a more covered/comfortable style but we seem to be stuck in the 80s with the knickers style IMO!

Thanks. I usually avoid Shein but may have to give them a go due to not much other choice!

Thanks all for the suggestions. I will take a look at them soon if this child is going to actually nap today 😂

I just think why do we have to be subjected to so many cut outs? Men don’t have to. I like being feminine but why does looking feminine equate to showing more flesh?

I used to not like one pieces except for lap swimming but they've come a long way, much more interesting styles now and sizes like long torso. It sounds like you might like one of those retro high waisted brief styles for a two piece though ?

Btw the cutout on the speedo linked is important so the straps don't fall down your shoulders while you're swimming, or sit too wide and chafe with your arm stroke. A full coverage cut like a vest top would feel weird and create drag.

MaisyMary77 · 24/06/2024 12:39

I have a really pretty swim skirt from Joe Browns. Covers everything I want covered and I feel nice in it.

Lentilweaver · 24/06/2024 12:42

I like Lands' End swimsuits for some coverage but not a massive skirt. Their Tugless range is great and often on sale.

StamppotAndGravy · 24/06/2024 12:44

Have you seen these? They have bikini tops and rash vests to match, so then it's a proper bikini set

I feel the same as you….lI have one of these reversible swimsuits, very good quality fabric and a nice fit. They have various options of shorts, tops etc.

Ugh wrong post quoted

I find that Heidi Klein bikini bottoms have really good bum coverage, just avoid the triangle bottoms with ties on the side. Also go a size up.

But wouldn’t it be easier to just get a bikini wax done? Or get a set of bikini trimmers and do it yourself?

This wasn't for you sorry, it's for the PP talking about leg something or others.

But if you Google shorts tankini, and shorts bikini there are absolutely hundreds with slightly more modest styles, no cut outs in the tops, proper shorts, vest style tops, boob tubes, bra styles or whatever you like. I'm not sure the issue is the volume of what's available, it's what you prefer not being the primary option.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 24/06/2024 12:48

I found better options when I went to a couple of lingerie sites, so might be worth checking out, as the fit was just so much better.

Bearpawk · 24/06/2024 12:53

I was going to suggest vintage style midi briefs. But by the sound of it you want your inner and upper thighs covered - so cycling short style is what you need ?
Or get some plain coloured board shorts if you don't want to look too much like a wannabe surfer ?

Men cut about with their whole top half out? Whether we want to see it or not. You seem to be trying to make this a feminist issue but I don't think it is. You have choices, you can wear a burkini if you'd like to be really modest.

FictionalCharacter · 24/06/2024 12:54

DD wears board shorts and a bikini top. Looks great.

maw1681 · 24/06/2024 13:00

I get it, not really confident to show my stomach these days but also not plus sized (uk 12-14). Tankinis tend to leave a strip of skin that I really don't want! I got a pair of high waisted bikini bottoms , "full brief" type ones then a tankini top , the bottoms come up so high it doesn't matter if the top rides up. Both from Next
I am also fair skinned and burn easily so more choices of swim shorts for ladies would be good, annoys me that all the men are in long shorts when women are supposed to wear bikini bottoms or tiny little shorts on the beach!

CactusMactus · 24/06/2024 13:16

Also, totally with you. It's either Boden Frump or up-the-crack knickers and push up bras! And anything with a frill or giant bow can knob-off.

I love the look of these, but I've heard mixed reviews about the website. Don't suppose anyone has used them and could recommend?
