to be surprised at the endurance of leopard print

I do have a couple of leopard print things.

But leopard print mainly makes me think of shadowy memories of once seeing Cynthia Payne in it on the news.

Anyone else?

I'm not from the UK so no idea of the references here, but I certainly went through a leopard phase about 7ish years ago. I can't stand the colourful leopards though, only the "real" brown and blackpppp. However, I've grown out of it now and only have one jacket left (because I love the shape). I sold all the printed stuff on Vinted and they sold REALLY fast.

Gensola · 12/06/2024 22:15

I loved it in my late 20s and wore lots of it - even had a faux fur massive coat thing, but I went off it for some reason and now don’t even like the “scamp and dude” pink/teal leopard prints. I can’t explain why, it was almost overnight I just felt I didn’t want to wear it anymore.

ObliviousCoalmine · 12/06/2024 22:17

Oh you lost me at "prozzie vibes". Meh.

mdinbc · 12/06/2024 23:00

Not from UK either. I can only guess that 'prozzie' means prostitute?

I'm not really into prints, but I do have one black and grey leopard print scarf.

Craftycorvid · 12/06/2024 23:09

I love a bit of puss print! Have it in various iterations including Doc Martens. Have a friend who loathes two things: fake fur generally and leopard print specifically; it is great fun seeing her wince at my Bet Lynch coat (and our Bet was a goddess).

Appalonia · 12/06/2024 23:14

I've got 4 fake fur coats in animal print, love them! One is a long, very dramatic snow leopard cost that I always get lots of compliments wearing ( although I was on a train once, stood up to get off and a young man standing behind me practically fainted and said, how many animals died to make that?! ) 😂😂

Think a carpet is maybe going a bit too far tho...

DramaAlpaca · 12/06/2024 23:48

I'm currently wearing my very comfy leopard print slippers.

They are the only leopardy things I own though, I think animal print in general is tacky and very definitely not my vibe.

But... I do have a pair of snakeskin pattern ankle boots and I love them, mainly because they're just a bit different and not normally my thing, but I think they're fab and they fit like they were made for me.

henlake7 · 13/06/2024 10:28

I def wouldnt of worn it when I was younger (and actually cared what other people thought!!LOL) but its calling out to me now Im over 50!
I love my new maxi skirt in leopard print. Im quite picky in how Id wear it though. I like animal print if its mixed with casual elements like boots, jeans or tees but I wouldnt glam it up....looks fine on others but def not my vibe.

You guys. I remember what put me off about this place now lol.

I said it has prozzie vibes i.e. the fabric motif itself. It has distant associations in the past with sex workers.

Obviously it doesn't literally transform any woman who wears it into a sex worker or having a sex worker appearance. Or virtually all women would be, because most of us have worn something with it at some point.

But I'm not going to get into further classic MN debate of having to explain the minutiae of every single word you say, literally a phrase of a few word's length, 2 of which words are some of the most common in the English language, because of MNers being 'mah SJW pearls.'

Yep I see what you all mean now about it being 'a neutral' in that respect, if combined with everyday or daytime clothing. I do have a dress in it for a night out though. Smile

I love leopard print - it's really having a moment again right now if you look at TikTok. (Where people are definitely not saying shit like "prozzie vibes" about the way other women dress - wtf?)

TheChosenTwo · 13/06/2024 10:58

I’m always surprised to hear people like leopard print or any animal print but only because I hate them! So I just subconsciously write it all off as a choice because I’d never wear it 😂

Pancakefam · 13/06/2024 11:03

I like it so much. And it makes no difference what others think of it. Actually maybe that's partly what I like about it. It shows that you don't care. You're wearing it for you alone, because it makes you feel good!

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 13/06/2024 11:08

I am a fan, although I would caveat that animal prints benefit from being higher quality fabrics - look lovely in silks, nice weighted fabric. I have a classic colourway pair of boots and an alternate colourway top and dress. I suspect that it depends a lot on an individuals' style whether or not they like it but I consider it a neutral, like denim.

Madickenxx · 13/06/2024 11:15

I also love it and would have cringed at my 50 year old self 20 years ago 😂. I don't wear it all the time and not often in the usual colourway but am drawn to animal prints in general. I have a really cool skirt with giraffes on it - it's epic and I don't care that most people disagree!

SpongeBabeSquarePants · 13/06/2024 11:17

I used to like animal print for its trashiness, but it's all gone a bit middle aged and mumsy now

Pinktruffle · 13/06/2024 11:21

I can deal with zebra print but leopard print is awful. I really don't understand it's apparently ensuring appeal. It screams soap opera barmaid to me.

LifeInTheRaw · 13/06/2024 11:28

Animal print can look great or tacky depending on a lot of factors.
Personally I'd only wear one item at a time with that pattern.
Equally, I like some denim, but massively CRINGE at double denim 😖

katebushh · 13/06/2024 11:38

I think it completely depends on the quality and the cut.

It looks cheap and nasty if it's a polyester badly cut piece but if it's decent fabric and styled well I love it.

Imnotarestaurant · 13/06/2024 11:39

OolongTeaDrinker · 12/06/2024 15:31

I’ve noticed amongst some friends that they suddenly started wearing animal prints after having children, having not worn them before then. I’ve often wondered why.

It’s easier to disguise marks from sticky fingers/snotty noses/sitting on the floor with patterned clothes!!

TanyaLoves · 13/06/2024 12:19

Nothing wrong with a bit of leopard print! It's a neutral you know...

itsmylife7 · 13/06/2024 13:16

I've just bought an amazing pair of flat shoes in leopard print...suede,black n brown combination.

Think I'm going to wear them today and watch people's reactions 😀

TheDogisHavingaDream · 13/06/2024 13:30

Agree with the comments about quality of the item/fabric being key. I’m also really fussy about the colour of traditionsl
leopard print. If it’s too yellow or garish it looks tacky to me. Done right it can be very classy however.

I’m not a big fan of coloured leopard print although I do have a snow leopard scarf which I like.

I think leooard is a neutral and one of my favorite looks was a friend of mine a few years ago wearing a Kelly green dress with leopard print heels. Fantastic.

I have a Zara tiger print scarf from a few years ago that’s really cool and as a teen I had a brilliant cow print bag. This is now making me want a giraffe something 🦒😂

TheDogisHavingaDream · 13/06/2024 13:33

Also, a few years ago a friend had a 40th birthday party with an animal print theme which was brilliant. Lots of options and you can go wild (ha!) or just get one little accessory and still be on theme. Recommend if anyone ever needs a dress code/theme idea!

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 13/06/2024 14:24

I’m on holiday and was only saying this yesterday. Quite a bit if it about here.
It’s never been my thing but if you like it wear it.
I don’t think anyone under 40 will get the Bet Lynch or Cynthia Payne reference.
