Late fifties makeup or no makeup

goldeneye77 · 30/05/2024 10:24

Prefer not to wear makeup anymore.
Don't think it makes me look better.
Was thinking of getting rid of it all and just continuing with moisturised skin, concealer if spots, spf, lipstick.
Not keen on feel/of foundation/powder anymore.
Think eyes look worse with makeup whereas when younger looked better.
Can get ready quicker than oh now.
Love the no hassle of it and still look after skin but not bothered if I am at an event without it whereas before it would have been a no go.
What does everyone else do and think?
Has anyone else decided to get rid of makeup and regretted it or so glad?
It will give me a lot more room too.
Would love to hear others thoughts young or my age or older?

Eeek, Ive gone against the grain here

59 and Im embracing makeup for the first time since my 20's lol

But for me its been because for so much of my life I was severely depressed and just getting through the day was all I could manage but these past 18 months Ive done a lot of work on me, getting myself physically fit ( doing my first marathon mext month ), losing a shed load of weight, investing in a skin care regime, looking after hair and nails, finding a wardrobe Im comfortable in etc so finally I felt confident about trying cosmetics again

Its been trial and error and the first few times of leaving the house wearing it were daunting - esp to work - but any comments made have been along the lines of - you are looking really well today, did you get your hair done? So I guess Im managing to pass of a natural look - me but brighter

I use a light foundation, a bit of blush, bit of bronzer - 5 mins tops. If Im going out out I add a bit of mascara. Still learning to do eyes and lippy looks awful on me

good for you!👏 little bit older and now trying to do exactly the same thing.. telling me about trial and error !! I know about advice given on YouTube videos but really wish it was easy to find a make up stylist..no to store counters because of the artificial lighting..

Good luck👍

I'm 61 and have never bothered with much makeup, mainly because it's too much of a faff and because I have very poor eyesight and if I take off my glasses I can't see what I'm doing!

Nowadays I put on a CC cream and a bit of pale lipstick and think I look fine with that. However, I'm very lucky not to have lines or wrinkles

suki1964 · 01/06/2024 13:55

Funnily enough Im just back from an over nighter in Belfast , went to see a show, spent the morning dandering around Belfast

See I live very rural and whats the norm here isnt the norm there :) Here its pretty normal to put on the finery and face just to do the Tesco run - because you never know who you will meet in town :) Same as you would for Church or going for a casual pub meal so its rare not to see women without some kind of make up on when out an about

However, in Belfast , there were a lot more over 50's without make up on - not for the show - everyone dolls up for those - but walking about, watching people, very few had on much if any make up on - even the under 30's it was less obvious then what I see around here. Eating out last night, very little in the way of cosmetics on show - lots of fresh faces . So much so that this morning my face got its face serum and a bit of bronzer and that was it :)

''@toomanytonotice
@KnittedCardi

I completely disagree. Many women look better without. It's the societal norm that leads to the expectation that women should wear make-up to look better.

What's wrong exactly with looking natural. Men seem to manage perfectly well.
Show quote history
This. It’s subjective and we are conditioned to think make up = glamorous, prettier etc.''

I think that is so true.

I think it is societal conditioning, and also the fact that companies want to sell products so they are going to use the narrative that you need to 'cover/perfect/conceal/brighten' your face to be attractive and invent flaws and problems to keep women buying their stuff...

I do think women should absolutely choose what make them feel good about themselves though.

But I must say I now find myself looking at women of all ages and wonder why they feel the need to wear so much stuff (fake tan, fake nails, heavy foundation, fake eyelashes) when they would actually look better with either something lighter that enhances rather than covers or no make up at all.

I think that with social media as well many people have almost stop recognising what a natural/real face looks like and instead think that you should aim for something that requires tons of make up and filters.

Makes me rather sad...

As a pp said, good for you! 😄 See, make up makes a woman feel a lot better, as well as looking better. Smile Practice at the lippy though, as I don't think lippy looks awful on anyone!

I don't know why a few posters have got their panties up in a bunch at me saying most women look better with make up on! They do. 😆 Don't understand why people are denying it. I don't mean CAKED in it, but just subtle blush, tinted foundation, and a bit of lippy, mascara, eyeliner, and eye shadow. It enhances your features, softens your face, and smooths out/covers any blemishes.

It's not a crime to say most women look better with a bit of make up on. As I said, they DO! They just DO. 😆 It's got fuck-all to do with 'societal conditioning' LOL. Most women feel so much better with a bit of make up on, and look it!

It’s your opinion they look better with make up on.

my opinion is they don’t look better with make up on.

it is entirely subjective and often based on societal norms.

Floisme · 01/06/2024 14:44

I certainly used to think I looked better with make up on. But little by little I gave up - first on eye liner and mascara, then eye shadow, then foundation and blusher. There were several reasons for doing it (some to do with skin sensitivity so not exactly a free choice). At first I didn't particularly like it but after a while it was like having a reset and, once I'd been through it, most make up looked weird.

I say 'most' because I did start wearing lipstick and still do, so I'm not some kind of anti make up ideologue but I only like it for myself when it's quick, easy and a bit of fun.

And even if you showed me scientific proof that I looked better with more, I'd still say, 'thanks but nah.' Cos like @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I'm passionate about clothes but for the most part, can't be bothered with make up.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 01/06/2024 14:48

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway

Its just your opinion that women look better with make up on. Opinion not fact. And its an opinion that you've been conditioned to your whole life to hold.

Caterpillargirl23 · 01/06/2024 15:03

I wish I knew if I looked better with or withoutmake up then I could either bin it or embrace it.

The difference I suspect is marginal. I certainly don't get compliments when I wear make up.
Also re: lipstick they mostly dry my lips out . I don't think the peeling lip look for a week after trying a new one does me any favours.

WayOutOfLine · 01/06/2024 15:55

@Caterpillargirl23 try using a lip oil or lip balm instead of a lipstick, it looks more modern anyway (so my teens tell me), or one of the sheer lipsticks.

Caterpillargirl23 · 01/06/2024 16:04

@WayOutOfLine
I've tried many tinted lip balms, sometimes there's so little colour there's no point and some still cause flakey lips.
I've not tried a lip oil but I imagine they'll be similar.

Craftycorvid · 01/06/2024 16:11

Whoever said up-thread that make-up means they look as though they may steal someone’s purse and bite their children, tips, please! I totally aspire to that look. 😆

You have forgotten to add “in my opinion”, or do you think that you believing something makes it an objective fact?

MaryFuckingFerguson · 01/06/2024 18:26

I’m 52 and lucky in that I have dark lashes and brows so don’t look too washed out without makeup. But I feel I look far, far better with it and rarely leave the house without it. I even wear a bit to the gym!

It's got fuck-all to do with 'societal conditioning

The acceptable standard of female beauty has got just about everything to do with societal conditions.

@Floisme please can I ask which lipstick you use that works with a bare face? I use tinted lip balm (usually Burt's bees) with no other makeup on but not used lipstick for a while.

RaraRachael · 01/06/2024 23:38

I just can't bd bothered with thd effort needed. I'm retired and any place ai go I couldn't care less what I look like

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 01/06/2024 23:50

I can't be arsed, and also notice it doesn't have the same effect as when I was younger. I agree with @Floisme that it makes me look "painted". I don't know whether it's because I rarely see it on myself now or because my face has changed in colour.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 01/06/2024 23:51

I do regularly have my hair cut well, though.
