Late fifties makeup or no makeup

goldeneye77 · 30/05/2024 10:24

Prefer not to wear makeup anymore.
Don't think it makes me look better.
Was thinking of getting rid of it all and just continuing with moisturised skin, concealer if spots, spf, lipstick.
Not keen on feel/of foundation/powder anymore.
Think eyes look worse with makeup whereas when younger looked better.
Can get ready quicker than oh now.
Love the no hassle of it and still look after skin but not bothered if I am at an event without it whereas before it would have been a no go.
What does everyone else do and think?
Has anyone else decided to get rid of makeup and regretted it or so glad?
It will give me a lot more room too.
Would love to hear others thoughts young or my age or older?

I’ve paid for a make up lesson at a beauty counter before. It was £40( probably more now!) it took about half an hour and I got a £40 discount on products I bought on the day so essentially free.

Bobbi brown is often recommended but the makeup isn’t cheap so I’d have a think about your budget before you go.

I think MAC has good make up lessons?
I WFH so I mostly can't be bothered.

Or can you find a teen girl to teach you? Or Tiktok? DD has been promising to teach me how to do eye makeup but I have never got round to it.

I've never worn much makeup - I'm 68 now and haven't worn any since I was about 40. I just use moisturiser and lipstick. Makeup on older faces is very ageing imho.

ZekeZeke · 30/05/2024 12:22

I've yet to see anyone that looks better without make up.(unless you are supermodel like with zero blemishes or early 20s)
I m not saying plaster it on, some light foundation, bronzer, concealer, eyeshadow, mascara and lipstick.
takes me exactly 5 minutes in the morning.
edited to add. Use good make up, and less is more

Edited

My skin looks better but yeah you are right most people do look better with abit of make as enhances or accentuates but I just prefer fresh face now and more like the real me and still look ok.
A lot less hassle.

I am 57 and have never really worn a full face of makeup. None of the women in my family do for some reason. Definitely using less now.

Tinted moisturiser maybe once a week. Laura Mercier is my go to. I do like lipsticks but now use little pots of Chanel lip balm (red camellia) or sheer lipsticks, again veering into redder shades which I never wore when young. I also have some colour saturated lipsticks by Lisa Eldridge but I just pat some on with my finger as they are quite heavy. I am more likely to paint my nails or have my eyelashes tinted than wear actual eye makeup or a foundation.

CapaciousHag · 30/05/2024 13:18

I’m early 60s and most of the professional or retired women I know wear almost no make up - but have beautiful hair!

If I could be bothered to get my eyebrows tinted I wouldn’t bother with much more than mascara now. I need some extensive dental work before I’d feel comfortable with lipstick again - but I do miss that final gesture before leaving the house.

However, I’ve never worn foundation. A Charlotte Tilbury base thing made a miraculous difference on Zoom but off screen I can only wear the tiniest dab mixed with facial oil to avoid looking unnaturally grey and wrinkly.

Really I’m happier to throw money at clothes and perfume. Stress has made my face almost unrecognisable to me over the last few months - but people still compliment me on my clothes, so 🤷🏽‍♀️ …

Agree. I love my make up. I’d never stop wearing it

SoapCollector · 30/05/2024 13:32

I agree with what @Floisme is saying. I gave up wearing it about 7/8 years ago, I tried no makeup for a month and found I didn't miss it. Apart from tinted lip balm occasionally, I use a non tinted suncream in very warm weather. For me it feels weird painting my face now!

Funnywonder · 30/05/2024 15:39

I'm 57 and wear a bit of foundation, concealer and mascara. Sometimes just the concealer. I have always had very dark circles around my eyes and hate all the 'you look tired' remarks. I think I probably do look tired. In fact I AM tired😆 Very very rarely I wear lipstick, but I always feel vaguely ridiculous in it.

What is MAC?

It’s a make up brand. They still do make up lessons and discount against products bought on the day. They convinced me to try a red lip which really suits me still and taught me how to do s classic smokey eye.

I would only wear foundation if I was going to a special event, maybe a couple of times a year. I always wear eye make up though as my eyes disappear without it (very fine and pale eyelashes.) I definitely look better with make up.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 30/05/2024 22:19
  1. Hardly wear any makeup now. For every day, nothing except a very light foundation or a tinted moisturiser. Mascara, lipstick and eyeliner only for very special occasions.

I'm obsessed by clothes and dressing up and love thinking about what I wear. I have no interest whatsoever in the beauty side of Style and Beauty.

thatone · 30/05/2024 22:26

I am also in my fifties and wear much less make-up now - just some foundation and maybe a lip tint. Eye make up always smudges on me so I gave that up and I've never really used blusher.

ComfyButFrumpy · 30/05/2024 22:37

I used to love makeup and enjoyed experimenting with colours.
Not any more. I think good eyebrows and very neutral colours look best now. And no harsh lines. It's a shame.

I tried on an old favourite lipstick the other day in shocking pink and just looked like The Joker.

Justcats · 30/05/2024 22:41

You will prise my mascara and eyeliner out of my cold dead hands,

PashaMinaMio · 30/05/2024 22:48

I’m an older Mumsnetter and I will never give up make up. (Or decent perfume.)

Ive recently been to a lady who did my make up beautifully and gave me lots of tips to refresh and modernise my skills and colours, and some good ideas about application. I loved every minute of the time it took.

I wear a bit of makeup every day and embellish it when we go out. I’ve got good skin and I just love the feel good well groomed feeling it gives me.

Each to his own.

Hi where did you find the make up artist please?

Craftycorvid · 30/05/2024 23:10

My relationship with make-up has definitely changed hugely. These days I wear it if I want to but not if I don’t. I blend foundation with serum or moisturiser as it feels lighter. I sometimes just use mascara if I can’t be bothered with full eye make-up. I don’t often bother with lipstick. This isn’t because of any assumptions about what suits me, more my varying moods.

Lipstick is makeup!

I struggle to get my eyeliner to look right and I’m 59. Any tips? Thanks.

StoneTheCrone · 30/05/2024 23:14

The trick is to add moisture, so i make sure everything is dewy and natural, so a CC Cream only, cream blusher in peach, cream eyeshadow in peach, a nude lipstick or gloss, and brown volumising mascara (i use a lash serum too).

So it looks like Ive made an effort but still look natural, soft and juicy.

Use powder shadow to line . Its softer.

BeBopBeBop · 30/05/2024 23:31

I have to admit I fell for the Trinny hype but it does work for me. I use her BFF SPF 30 cream (also because I'm in a hot country so need to wear SPF every day) and I have my eye lashes tinted so it looks like I have mascara on.

If I'm going out and want makeup then I use some of her lip gloss (Bella or Jenita for out out) and eye cream (justice, wisdom and magician in order of darkness depending on time/place). Takes me 2 minutes tops applied with my finger. I did one of their zoom make up sessions, the lady wasn't great on how to apply (I don't think she really understood older skin!) but she was good on colour selection as those pots work very well my skin tone.

measureofmydreams · 31/05/2024 06:35

62 and I wear a tinted mosturiser, blusher, mascara, neutral eyeshadow and tinted lip balm if I'm going into the office ( 2 days). If I were going somewhere special I would do the same. Having my eyebrows tinted and shaped regularly works well for me.
I have dialled down on what I wear (eg ten years ago it was eyeliner, bronzer etc) and how often.

I look better with less and it feels liberating. WFH has shifted things for me.
